Perks of being home sick with COVID…. No waiting on new episodes from Darcie!!!!

Claire Eyles

I literally haven't been past my front step & backyard in over a month due to being in lockdown, the delta strain of covid throwing infection parties all over my city, and being at a high risk due to cancer (the non lethal sort, as opposed to covid which could realistically kill me if I contracted it). Darcie reactions make me so happy in this shitty, shitty, really, really shitty situation. :D

Xander's behavior here was super woke for 1998 where the Larry fake locker room toxic masculinity was still the standard.

Some Buffy podcasters described the wolf suit as what you would be able to get at Party City 15 minutes before closing time on Halloween and they'd have to root around in the dumpster to find it for you.

Introducing a gay character in the 90's was quite a big thing . This is the same network that turned down Bianca Lawson(Kendra) for the Cordelia role as they were uncomfortable about an interracial relationship. I don't think Xander was homophobic if anything he was just thrown . I remember my best friend at school reacting like this when I came out .

The perks of being off work for Rosh Hashanah and watching a new Buffy reaction from Darcie rather than doing anything to observe the holiday. Except eating my mom's leftover brisket and kugel for lunch.

I actually really appreciate the Larry comes out scene in this episode. I had a friend back in the 90s who was like hyper masculine, and then when he found out that I was bisexual he started opening up to me about the feeling he had towards men (then I got where the bursts of knuckle dragging neanderthal-isms were coming from). We started spending a tonne of time just talking about sexuality & attraction & feelings, and then he came out to me as bisexual. A little while later he decided to also come out to his work mates, who were like mega straight, blokey, construction worker types, and they were totally accepting, like "yeah cool, whatever makes you happy, hey you wanna grab some beers and hang out with us after work". I think that gave him the courage to eventually come out as gay, and when he did it was so wonderful to see the freedom he obviously felt at finally being able to drop the mask and just be himself. He started doing drag shows and everything, and he was so happy it was just amazing to see. So yeah, the Larry thing, I can relate to that from having watched someone go through a similar thing.

It's very easy to see Xander's reaction here as problematic, but it's important to remember the time this came out. The past twenty years has thankfully changed a lot of minds and hearts about the LGBTQ+ community. Xander, at the time, was a refreshing character who wasn't an agro/bully teenage boy, but whose characteristics also haven't aged as well as others. He was one of my favorites when I first watched, and now he's a bit cringey, but that's due to the benefit of a lot of years of progress as well. As for the school grades, we do those as well. We just also have cute little names for them! 9th = Freshman, 10th = Sophomore, 11th = Junior, 12th = Senior. Edited to add: I forgot to mention a line that I'm not sure if you heard at the end, it's one of my favorites. After Willow mentions her 3 days.. Oz's response is "You are quite the human." and it's a compliment/comment I use for people to this day. I just love it.

Oh, Xander. It's always two steps forward, one step back with him. (Or sometimes one step forward, two steps back...) The werewolf reminds me of the Rodents of Unusual Size from the Princess Bride (in the sense that both are really funny because of how they're obviously just people in furry suits haha). And yes, a senior is in grade 12, while a junior is in grade 11.

A lot of what I was going to say was already said :P but one of the things that bothered me about Xander here was his jealousy towards Willow. He had tons of time to invite her for a date and now, as soon as she's happy, he's jealous? I feel really bad for Cordelia. Their relationship is finally in the open and all he can talk about is Willow. I know Cordy isn't the nicest person in the world but she deserves more than that. I love Oz in this episode! He just accepts that werewolves exist so fast and nonchalantly. We also see some depth though, with him being scared that he killed someone and the possibility of Willow not liking him anymore. Your sound and everything quality was fine btw!

Well, I promise to be more pithy this time. (Yikes, I didn't even get halfway through last ep. I'm great at STARTING big projects, but…"a little shaky on the dismount", to quote Joyce.) DARCIE; (offering creature suggestions) …the army of ants… I seriously want to see the show you would make. Although the Robot Cats would still be my #1. Is that Xander's shirt Oz wears in the teaser? I feel we've seen a similar pattern on X before. Okay, perhaps not Xander's shirt, since he's twice Oz's size, but still. "Who could resist your wily Willow charms?" Dammit, Buffy, stop teasing those of us who still have delusions, er, "hope" that you and Willow will date… (See also Willow teasing Buffy about the "screenful of violent incidents", which I'm convinced is Willow flirting. Because I'm insane.) WILLOW: I mean, Xander and Cordelia? What does he see in her, anyhow? (cut to Xander and Cordelia furiously making out) My dad (R.I.P.) LOL'd at that. Fair enough, I suppose. Yup, not only is it a costume, but if you'd looked at the end credits, you'd see that the guy in the suit got a listing. It's on his IMDb, I suppose. GILES: [is too excited about werewolves] BUFFY: He needs to get a pet. Be fair, Buffy. You're not the only one who had a breakup. (Maybe BUFFY needs a pet, too? Start small…maybe a lizard?) Nice job making Larry a red herring, although you'll notice he specifies the dog attack as "last week". So it couldn't have been a werewolf. Remember my telling you about Jeff Pruitt, the stunt coordinator, dating Sophia Crawford (Buffy's stunt double)? Well, what happened here was that the rope trap that catches Buffy wasn't properly weighted, and Sophia actually went flying and landed very hard. (Jeff claims she could have been killed, but he's in love with her; might be exaggerating.) Fortunately, Jeff was able to take away her stress…by pulling out the ring box he was carrying and asking her to marry him. (Nice save, but you can only do it once…) And, of course, that's why we have stunt people. Joss must have cringed imagining SMG getting thrown like that. CORDELIA: It's like I don't even exist! Never noticed before, but it was just last episode where Xander ran after Willow, with not even a thought for Cordy. Huh. If you look closely, you can see the stagehands pushing the car as Giles "drives up" to the Bronze. Hope they got extra for that. BUFFY: I live with that every day. Sometimes I point to this episode as a strong example of moral focus, what with this and Buffy needing TWO Inspiring Speeches (Giles in the car, Xander in the funeral home) to beat her depression. But of course the arc factors in as well; Buffy is more conscious of her failings because she just let Angel get away. Which (although she doesn't know it yet) is what got Theresa killed. It would be nice if Oz would admit that he's the werewolf. I get that he's under stress (and Buffy's making threats), but still… Yes, that's THREE "New York" shirts from Oz. My head-canon is that he took a vacation there, and went a little souvenir-happy. We do know that Willow has never been there, since she asks Ampata what it's like in "Inca Mummy Girl". (Which is when we first meet Oz. Huh.)

And OF COURSE, Patreon eats part 2. Darcie, could you be so kind as to repost from your notifications? It's a bit long (I know, SHOCKER) for me to re-do, off the cuff. Thanks.

You can almost see the standard “gay panic” trope morphing into something slightly less objectionable in real time here. Compare it with several moments from “Friends” and the difference is even clearer, though the original problematic lineage is in plain sight too.

Melissa

I adored Giles this episode being so cute about being into werewolves. His reaction "one of the classics" is just so adorable. Xander is really not that likeable this episode. Aside from the whole Larry coming out, he's also completely dismissive of Cordelia and weirdly obsessive about Willow and Oz becoming a thing. Like dude, you have someone. Maybe focus on her for a change and realize Oz is a pretty great guy and that you f'ed up by not getting together with Willow yourself when you had the chance. It comes off as creepy and stalkerish behavior. Sorry, this is my Xander hate coming out. It started a while ago and really ramps up at times. I liked that we got just enough Angel to unnerve Buffy. And I agree that Angelus' personality can be a bit charming in a way. I mean, he's an asshole but he's also hilarious and can really engage you before he bites your neck lol.

And I’m caught up on every reaction 🙌 On the whole Xander thing, as a gay kid growing up in the 90s I’ve always seen Xander response to Larry coming out as pretty well done. You gotta remember at this point in time there hadn’t even been a gay kiss on television and toxic masculinity was on a whole different level. When I told my friends some had the same reaction as Xander and they’re my greatest advocates today. The thing is not everyone knows how to react to every situation, and although Xander can be problematic I’ve always seen his “greyness” as a character quite refreshing to look back on. He’s definitely a very human character and its a much different time. I cannot wait to see your next few reactions and particularly for the rest of the season.

Viewing Larry's coming out scene through a 2021 lens is unhelpful here. Whilst yes, there is an active example of hetero gay panic as a trope, the handling of Larry's experience was a significant step in the right direction, especially when it comes to material geared towards younger audiences.

This was the first ever episode of Buffy I watched - when I was a teenager, so I always like this episode

Madam Satsuma

Just catching up here, but man I LOVE the Wild America shoutout. 13-year-old me was screaming.

Madam Satsuma

SAME. I owned it. On VHS. That tape got a lot of play, let me tell you.

Eileen Furtado

I like that you call us viewers cornpops :p hehe its so cute

Shelby

So, I know this reaction is about 8 months old (just subscribed to your patreon and I'm catching up), but I had to comment because as if I didn't love you and your reactions enough already, you had to go and mention Wild America??!! Officially the best <3 Dude, my sister and I were obsessed with that movie when we were younger. And it was recently randomly playing on some channel so obviously I had to hit record, immediately notify my sister, and we watched it together a few days later (we're 30 and 34 now) 😂
