Last Sunday we sat down and looked over around 80 anime openings you submitted. We rated several and roasted many. Here's a vod with slightly corrected sound balancing for your enjoyment.

Thanks for the submissions!

AHuf

The dandandan opening is better than you are giving credit for. Do not agree. However witch watch comments are on point.

Aardwoof

hi i’m the one who recommended the happy sugar life OP!! (i’m sad because i had to go do Easter Things with my family so i couldn’t catch the part of the stream where you reviewed it and then couldn’t comment about it because i got back like hours later rip) yeah it’s definitely one of those Fucked Up animes!! basic plot is Cute Anime Girl kIDNAPS A CHILD and grooms her and does a lot of Not Good things but she’s unfortunately the only one you can really root for because the only decent person is killed off in the second episode and now it’s Oops! All Pedophiles!!! just a fucked up show about fucked up people doing fucked up things but hey she jumps off a building and i think the kid survives iirc so uh. yay??? thanks for reviewing the OP!!! :DD

Rooney

I subscribed to make a submission but got so distracted with all the other cool stuff in this picture on that I forgot to. Great stream regardless!

Somme_One

My request didn't make it... That's too bad. Oh well. That being said, the Dinosaur King OP is peak and I'm so glad I learned about it

BigMoffers

Aww… My Inazuma Eleven Ares Dub opening didn’t make it.

Folkloric

Open question: Which opening do you prefer? Oliver y Benji Or Dinosaur King

Folkloric

I submitted that one and I’m so happy so many liked it. Well, maybe liked isn’t the best word lol

Folkloric

Obviously I’m biased cause I submitted the Dinosaur King OP but I will say the Oliver y Benji slow head turn had me fucking wheezing

The Awakened Floof

I submitted the Pop Team Epic opening, mainly because of its use of credits and themes. Like, I believe the opening sells you on the fact that Pop Team Epic is one massive shitpost.

Somme_One

You're right, "loved" would be a better way to describe my feelings.

Crimson Claw

Wow that MHA: Vigilantes opening made me go "wow, that's bad!" out loud. 😂 The song really takes me out of it. It feels like the most cookie cutter popular design, with nothing really to grasp during it

Another Warren

I am shocked and delighted both that Ronin Warriors USA made the cut and that the thoughts about it are so so similar to my own. Hee.

Elated Megalodon

I was way too late to submit anything, but I'm legitimately surprised that no one recommended the third Beastars OP... oh well. lol

Copacetic_Cloud

I shall never forgive Aloha for erasing the Read or Die opening. May a pebble always find a way into their shoe... But other than that, great work all around!

Act One

Glad one of my three submissions made it onto the stream (I was one of the people who submitted Buddy Daddies); I had also submitted Moriarty the Patriot's S1 OP and Haikyuu's S3 OP, but I was guilty of typing paragraphs, so I don't blame Aloha for going "die." It's all worth it for the glory of Oliver y Benji and Dinosaur King.

Bird Krow Fly

I'm so happy that I can see your reactions to Oliver and Benji whenever I need a laugh. Truly amazing

JelloApocalypse

Much better than the second, not quite as good as the first

Chrono101034

This is unrelated but jello are you gonna audiobookify the novelization for epithet season 1

mayordomoGoliat

I'm glad you enjoyed Oliver Y Benji and the other two, if you do another I think I have a few more Castilian or Catalan openings... Although not sure if they'd reach Oliver y Benji levels. We have a very solid dubbing spanish industry in Spain, decent translations or adaptations too.

Vic Cutting

Yunno I think this has helped me learn that I just.. don’t have the same taste as jello Still real good to hear your explanations for your opinions

Marijayne

So sad that there were so many trashy anime openings but no Princess Jellyfish 😔

aldawulf

Tired brain thought but I wish someone submitted an anime opening but the song was replaced with dear Maria just to see how what would happen

Rag Doll

I submitted the So I'm a Spider, So What? One and I'm so happy it got torn apart lamo. One of my favorite anime, but clunky ass OPs. The EDs are both good though

Garbage

I joined the stream sometime in the middle and thought that my entry was skipped, imagine my surprise when I watch the VOD and it's one of the first ones xD Kiba was one of my first anime ever, and it was some card game anime bullshit and I couldn't tell you the plot, but the opening has always been in my head for being... more or less what y'all said, THE basic stereotype anime opening.

Bebop-G

Kinda regret making the Danganronpa anime op one of my choices, didn’t realize only one of the options would make the cut. I’d be interested to hear your opinion on the Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken op.

PurpleIsDebeste

How do I say this nicely… I’m surprised by how bad some of these submissions are. Like obviously the premise of this stream is that people present openings they think are cool and jello tears them to ribbons, but i expected them to all do interesting design choices or have a lot to talk about, even if they executed it badly or were deeply flawed. Instead a number of these just got nothing going on. I mean I understand the impulse to show-and-tell your fave anime, but like, what do you gain from Jello talking about some of these when there’s not much to say?

PurpleIsDebeste

Wow thats an interesting take. You should go in depth about it and explain which of jello’s takes you disagree with and why.

AHuf

Didn't want to write a paragraph. Just wanted to say I disagree on that particular take. The composition of the opening is technically impressive enough that I think it deserved more praise and less roast especially considering the typical openings we see each season.

Flairina

Some of these were absolutely hysterical. I'm coming back to Oliver y Benji (2:11:36) and Dinosaur King (3:38:45) whenever I need a laugh. Also, I might get slated for saying this here (so Jello please disregard), but while the opening isn't anything special beyond one visual bit that hits hard once you've seen the show, and now has inherent ick associated with it due to Jello's recent DR playthrough, Akudama Drive is actually really good. It has little in common with DR beyond similarly absurd "ultimate" people existing in its world — there's no death game or the like; the plot is more of a sci-fi heist performed by the world's weirdest people, followed by the consequences thereof — and it's very stylish. Hell, I think the actual overall messages of "Authoritarian states can and *must* inevitably fall at the hands of the very people they oppress" and "It does not matter how well-intentioned a cop is, they are ultimately still a fucking COP " are ones that would really resonate with Jello if he gave it a chance. Not that I expect he will or should (and honestly with Jello's photosensitivity some of the technicolor palettes might give him a headache), I just felt the need to defend the show I'm not sure anyone besides me watched anyways. ^^;

dollqueen

I rewatched that anime a few months ago it holds up pretty well

dollqueen

Happy The Vampire Dies in No Time made it here since I wasn't able to submit it!

Blob28895

I think seeing these has made me question some of the ones in the 100-81 section of the final list. I kept asking myself "Is this opening better than cardcaptor sakura" and a lot of the time I felt like the answer was yes, which if thats the case theres a case to be made that it would/should have made the list

JelloApocalypse

I don't think people give CCS enough credit for executing something simple flawlessly.

JelloApocalypse

I heard the general consensus on Akumadama drive was that it started out promising and didn't stick any kind of landing which is why everybody stopped talking about it after the season it came out in

Flairina

Wha- hey, you were supposed to ignore this. As for the ending, it stuck the landing pretty well in *my* book, at least — maybe not others', but I certainly got enough out of it myself that I felt compelled to leave a comment about it, in spite of generally doing my best to avoid that everywhere else. It's admittedly been a while though, so maybe I'll give it a rewatch at some point and see if my opinion stays the same.

Blob28895

I think thats a fair point. I did watch the whole thing and it does have this feel that they just nailed what they were going for perfectly, but even so I feel like what they were going for was shooting low so it comes across as a percect execution of a compromise if that makes sense

S P

Dang I would have loved to submit the Go Go Loser Ranger opening and hear your thoughts

caramel

i was the one who submitted tomodachi game and i will say the anime is not good!!!! but the op is leagues better. is the op good? i didn't say that, but it is a guilty pleasure and i enjoy the song

Vee

Yea it sucks how the second op was hit so badly by quarantine. Atleast that's what I assumed happened

EdgarJacksby

damn, sorry about the chios school road op. i dont watch a lot of anime, and i kinda knew it wasnt gonna be received well, but i just really like the show (but like, in the same way as dragon’s maid where im like “trust me the good stuff is really good please ignore the bad stuff” kind of way) and before submitting, i did watch all the sgt frog openings, and i still like OP 2 the most

Time-Machine

Sad that if you picked one of mine (outside of Witch Watch) that it was Demon Girl Next Door and not Acro Trip, since I think you’d have more to say about Acro Trip (only sent the other because of street sign logo). Also surprised none of the three of you had heard of Anne of Green Gables or recognized it! Aside from its massive cultural relevance in the U.S., there was an existing hugely influential anime adaptation in the 70s that this new anime is clearly taking cues from. But I grew up DEEPLY immersed in Green Gables and Avonlea and got all the books from my mom (the same copies she read as a kid) so maybe I overestimate its notoriety.

FeyHaeven

Gotta say, I was thinking the same thing. I thought people would have learned from The Video and submit things they thought were good based on those standards, or at least submit something they wanted to hear Jello and Yam's sincere thoughts on, rather than offer up something that's pretty categorically bad

Marijayne

Yeah it really does. It's unfortunate that we'll never get a season 2 but the manga is amazing and I highly recommend it if you want to experiencethe full story.

Luveygold

As someone who's watched Acro trip and had a good time with it, it's got a fine opening. It's not exactly noteworthy though

FizzleBurger

"Tonari no Seki-kun" didn't make it into the video? 😢 That bums me out; I thought it was right up Jello's alley. It's dripping with the Jennies.

Ricky Conrad

YEAAAHHHH MY SUGGESTION GOT A “Could have made it” WOOOOOO

Huebert Keeper

I still say you would have liked R.O.D

Huebert Keeper

"In favor of one piece" and then silence? Correct, like, just in general

Time-Machine

I love that show! And it does have a great OP from what I remember.

Time-Machine

It does some fun stuff with pushing the logo away at the beginning, and tells a little micro-story within. I think it sells its premise better than a lot of comedy OPs. Certainly would have been more fun to watch than Machikado Mazoku. I love that show but the OPs don’t really sell it.

FizzleBurger

I love it too! And your memory is accurate, the OP is terrific.

JoeJoeBinks97

I guess I messed up on my submission, would have loved to see y'all react to Gosick and Space Dandy.

Fig Fox

I’m glad you guys liked the moomin opening, roughly where do you think you rank it? I also checked out all the other anime moomin openings and they are very 70’s and 90’s respectively lol

Fig Fox

since other people are putting up other ops they submitted or wanted to my other thoughts were kabaneri of the iron fortress, flip flappers or wonder egg priority

TheSaddestofPandas

So I feel like I have no sense of taste cause there are a lot of these that just seem nice to watch. idk, I think I need better standards or smth

JNH

I am the one. The one who can give context to the Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei op. The OPs and EDs for the series are fun to rewatch once the manga ended because The Context. You'll notice the Main Girl in the OP you watched doing strange things like replacing the other girls. Throwing flowers while on a pile of bodies. In the last volume of the manga you find out all the girls in the show received organ donations from a girl called An Akagi (literally named after what they called Anne Shirley/Anne of Green Gables in Japan) who died being hit by a car. They all take turns pretending to be a version of her called Fuura Kafuka (Franz Kafka) and you cannot tell because they're all same faced. Its why other ops/eds in the series feature imagery like organs, Fuura as a mother figure, etc. As an edgy young lady when the series first came out with Fuura as my favorite character I actually noticed things like how she would disappear from scenes in the show when she should be there, occasionally wearing accessories that should be on other girls like a specific bandage etc.

FeyHaeven

I submitted it too, but it didn't get chosen over that monogatari opening

FeyHaeven

I really like Read or Die the TV, but I don't think the opening is all that noteworthy. The credits are in the opening, painted onto some naked woman. Ok. What about it?

Huebert Keeper

I submitted the ova one, it's a bit better and sells the spy angle more. It's certainly a lot better than generic 2000's battle slop that apparently got submitted en masse

Rebecca Bieth

Hell yeah, Witch Watch!! I was getting a little worried towards the end, but I'm glad Aloha saved it for last

Caberea Alaskas

I was flash banged with Air Gear suddenly bringing back memories of specifically the opening. And then was also double flashbanged by the realisation that the heavy guitar line it opens with is almost identical to that of Will's theme "We will prevail" in Advance Wars days of ruin. I am now currently drowning in a weird wave of nostalgia.

Aqua Allison

3:17:00 I was wracking my brain as to why I knew this song, because I HAVE heard this before. This song, Colors of the World, was used by Narmak for his SpongeBob Anime OP1 animation.

FizzleBurger

I only submitted that one and one of the Danmachi openings (op4v2), but neither of them got picked. Maybe I did something wrong in my submission email...

PurpleIsDebeste

i think the cardcaptors op does a pretty good job at showing off its cast and a REALLY good job at making the main girl seem adorable, which are the main things a shojo magical girl series like that has to advertise well. It also makes me smile, and the ability to make me feel an emotion is honestly a pretty high bar as far as anime ops are concerned. tbh i think a lot of people are biased against slow openings, which is why fruits basket op1 and the princess tutu op are never on people's list. I get the feeling tho, any time i see an op i think "would i be okay replacing MHA op2 or FMAB op 2 with this?" and the answers usually yes just because I don't like shonen, even if they're well constructed openings. It's prolly just not for you

Lolhellogod

I didn't even post it, but I am genuinely shocked at the suggestion that laid-back camp does a worse job at selling its premise compared to Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid opening, especially considering those credits' placements. Oh well, maybe I just need to have higher animation standards. I've seen a bit more, and I guess the main point of contention I have is that diagetic credits are fucking hot, and that while I understand that some of the openings don't do a good job at selling the show itself. The pure effort put into them makes me twirl my hair, and go, oOoOoh, no, no I shant. Like, I think some of these openings sell themselves really well. I want to rewatch them over and over again. But on the other hand, I'll admit that I may not be as interested in the characters. But I do think that there could be an argument to be made that if an opening doesn't necessarily need to sell the characters, it just needs to sell the vibe. I want to watch too many losing heroines just because of the animation even though I know the opening is a lie.

Lolhellogod

Like, I don't know how else to describe it. If something is made with passion and effort, it's a lot easier to ignore some of the more negative qualities because the passion and effort is so attractive. I get it's a scam, I get it's a marketing tactic, but if you can convince someone that you love what you are selling, then doesn't that deserve brownie points

Racaila

Oliver y Benji!!!! that was so nostalgic and embarrassing I didn’t remember it being so bad, the song is great though

Scruffuls

So I'm the one who submitted the stanky D.gray-man opening, and I just wanna say I didn't pick the pixely version by choice. That was literally one of 2 videos of the opening I could find, and the only one on youtube had a horrendous red and blue 3d filter put over the whole video and I'm pretty sure it's slightly zoomed in on top of it. But I'm glad it got a happy reaction even if I know it's not a top 100 opening. I think the song does a lot of the heavy lifting of why I like it as much as I do.

Your Moist Toast

Yeah, I really don't get the Dandadan OP hype after seeing it. The only thing I really could tell about the show was there are aliens and the MC can turn into a monster. It shows a decent amount of characters but they don't really interact or show off their personalities. I remember one of the reasons you put CCS in the top 100 was because it showed off Sakura so well, meanwhile I'm not interested in any of these guys. The only character that stuck out to me was the lucky cat statue, and really only because it seems like it would be really annoying (I don't know anything about Dandadan so it could be a good character, but I got bad vibes). The monsters all being in a completely different style than the humans is fun, and the MC monster form being in the 3rd more sketchy style actually makes me intrigued about what exactly he is. Is it supposed to represent him as a combination of monster and human, or maybe a completely unique thing. Overall though that's really the only thing that actually interests me about the opening.

Another Warren

The dance was good, but of course it was good: it was stolen.

Sam Lewis

I mean that's the plot. There is a boy who turns into a monster and fights monsters. The good part of Dandadan is the interesting monsters but the OP really does a bad job showcasing that. It would have you believe they're generic toku villains and they aren't. It also doesn't show off the themes of conflic between sci-fi and folk horror which is the best theme that Dandadan has.

Your Moist Toast

Having the 3 different styles fight for dominance is a really cool idea they could do to show off that part of the show, but I honestly have no idea how the hell you'd manage to do that and make it look nice.

dizzy ditzy

aww too bad none of mine got picked, I was hoping we'd see all objective reasoning go out the window the moment a dragon showed up in Lodoss War's OP

DarkwingDove

I missed the stream while it was happening but it was nice to see your thoughts on everything submitted! I’m a lil bummed that my suggestion didn’t get picked but it’s understandable with how many submissions there were! But anyway this convinced me to check out Witch Watch and Rock is a Lady’s Modesty cause this is the first place I’ve heard about them, definitely intrigued by the openings!

Starlight

Really happy my submission made it. I knew they weren’t going to like it because without context it seems really bad (and it also isn’t the completed opening), but I was happy to hear thought about it either way

NotOneBear

Thanks for the shout-out Aloha! Happy to make things even a little bit easier. I completely agree the flashbang transitions in To Be Hero X are real bad but I enjoy the rest of it, especially the song, enough to overlook the wince-inducing frames of light. As for Speed Grapher, I dunno what to say. 😅 It was that weird kind of anime that looked "mature" to someone getting into the medium and it had Duran Duran!! What more could I ask for?

RainyMeadows

Dear god, Oliver y Benji left me in fucking tears

Candaru

If even one person gets interested in Poco's Udon World because of the cute child, it's worth Jello tearing the OP to shreds. Also, I thought the song was an absolute bop and that the OP visuals always cut on the beat really nicely (something not every OP does).

Candaru

Purple you are just here to start fires and I kinda love it

PurpleIsDebeste

poco's udon world did at least make me laugh from them holding on the shots hilariously long, so thats better than a lot of the openings people suggested

Kokoso El oso

it's very unfortunate our absolutely terrible original DBZ adaptation overshadows good work in other animes I feel like our Inazuma eleven OP adaptation is really iconic, was that on your list of ideas?

mayordomoGoliat

What you talking about Castilian & Catalan DB & DBZ was awesome, it was the best time of the morning before school. "Luz! Fuego! Destrucción!" Was the best part of the morning... Although I'll admit the quality of the dub varied over time a lot. Inazuma was another era of dubbing though, a lot more standardized but memorable in it's own way.

mayordomoGoliat

Although I'd probably rec some of the older anime stuff they did on tv, like the Castilian version of Maya the Bee opening which is very different from it's original or the Castilian opening of the Moomin... and I dunno I'd throw in Castilian Heidi for the hell of it.

BedknobsandBethanies

So, um. About that Speed Grapher OP: Gonzo didn’t ask for permission to use Girls on Film, and almost got sued by Duran Duran’s record label about it. So they just—took it off and slapped a random track from the OST onto visuals that were specifically animated to align with Girls on Film, and it looks. BAD.

Probably An Owl

The So I'm a Spider OP was so bad that I am compelled to watch the anime incase it score highly on the negative side of the scale

Somme_One

I read the light novels... They're not great, and unfortunately not in a very fun way. The light novel and anime flip-flop between some genuinely fun lit-rpg survival/dungeon exploration and the most boring generic Isekai magic high school plot... The manga fully cuts the bad half of the series, and is the only version where the main character has *decent expressions*... But it also cut the one scene in volume 6 that I liked so much it tricked me into thinking the series was good until I got to the end and realized it wasn't

GenericSalt

I submitted the Tegami Bachi op, and i wanna put a disclaimer before anyone goes and watches it lmao Letter Bee (Tegami Bachi) is a obscure anime from the mid 2000s (2008-2011) and was the first anime I ever saw and still have some fondness for. I still go back and rewatch every few years. If you do decide to watch it only watch the first 15 min of episode one, and then the last half of episode 3, then you can watch as normal from there. (There's a time skip after episode 3 that severely reduces the awfulness of the main characters voice lmao)  Its got some pretty unique world building and a magic system Ive never seen before or since and its genuinely really compelling. In this world peoples "hearts" can be carried through letters, which the Letter Bees deliver across the continent and defeat giant mecha creatures that want to eat the emotions. There's more lore as to WHY but I don't wanna type all that out lol Unfortunately it has a "Im a toddler that's actually a 3000 year old dragon and is "secretly" the key to the main plot and the main gag I have with the main character is landing on his face and acting like a toddler!" which is gross and makes it unwatchable lmao. If you can squint your eyes and ignore that, its a solid like 6/10 show. world and magic are 10/10 for me, but most of the non main cast are fairly one note and its ending is fairly bitter sweet in a "some things are permanent and that's okay" kind of way. which I really like.

Nyan

I submitted the gundam op! I could've sworn the one I sent in had credits. I shall bear the punishment nonetheless... Also yea, the whole show was a celebration of gundam but focusing in on char, the OP really does reflect that, glad yall like the transition to the archived footage of the OG series, to me that was the cherry on top of the whole thing

clottedscream

its very funny that your only review of cells at work was "no, that was not good" followed by immediately moving on. i agree. also this song is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of my goddamn life

Kokoso El oso

Took a while to see your reply but no you misunderstood me, Luz Fuego Destrucción as a song is iconic (and I think our GT opening version is the best adaptation) But you have to admit our DBZ dub itself was an inconsistent mess all the way through (Luz Infinita, Por el poder de Kaito, transformación, Vegeta el príncipe de una noble estirpe de samuráis, super guerrero, híper guerrero, mega guerrero, podría seguir jajaj)

RainyMeadows

I looked up that How To Become Ordinary show and it is NOT about a loser otaku. It's about a teen detective and his friend who swear they're going to try to become normal now that they're in high school, but they struggle a lot because Things Keep Happening.

John Hedlund-Fay

I'm sad that I didn't know about this because I'm really curious what y'all's opinions would be of the second opening to Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. To me that opening meets all of the criteria.

PurpleIsDebeste

okay i watched this op and the first one has REALLY good credits. i think there’s a few too many characters and it doesn’t show off their personalities well but the credits are gorgeous! i also really like the second op. the credits aren’t as nice but the imagery is REALLY evocative, its very cool

Icemage11

I used to read that series all the time, and I still love it in a nostalgia way, but god the last volume is so terrible. How are you going to make the main character and one of the only somewhat interesting characters fight an off screen battle the entire volume until the last 2 chapters.

Hamyton

Hey jello, I heard you where looking for dono insensitive ideas and I thought, what if you say to do another one of these streams again at some point in the future. It’s very fun to watch you, yam and aloha talk about ops, and since this came out a lot of neat openings came out. It also gives people a second chance to give you ops because a lot of them here where pretty mediocre to bad ops

Stagelights

the bit about the mashle OP tricking you into wanting to watch mashle is so real. the creepy nuts OP made me want to watch mashle because it was a really good OP and then i looked up if mashle was good and it turned out it was not

Madeline Stringer

I KNOW IM LATE BUT I KNOW SAINT TAIL I FEEL SEEN AND AM SO HAPPY HOLY FUCK

Negativitron

Yay! Skip and loafer! I would agree that the opening isn't exceptional and is a bit generic at times (as evidenced by Aloha's guess on the plot of the show, it could do more to clearly convey its concept), but I do think it works well enough.
