Oh no, Jello [has opinion on children's movie different than mine]. Welp, into the bronze bull you go

B-beau

Jello you mentioned that you don't know if anyone even cares about these audio reviews. And I just wanna let you know, I do. Your voice is very soothing to me and I love your commentary on things. Thanks jello :)

SmurfsFetishist7

Yeah you didn't watch the smurfs that's another thing

Bob the human

Oh shit a black hat reference, haven't thought about that show since middle school

Luveygold

Watch out world here I are 🕺🕺

Ruby June

oh wow I don't think Ive ever disagreed with a rating more than that for The Wild Robot, I'm very curious what you have to say, always love these long audio posts though

Julan

Ditto here, I really enjoy hearing your critiques on things, be it art I've seen or never heard of, whether I agree or disagree. Your opinions are always well thought out and entertaining, helps me reanalyze much of my media in different ways I wouldn't have otherwise considered. Hell, these audio reviews are the main reason I'm subbed to your Patreon!

oooooh a Secret Cars 2 Review!~ ngl i was kinda hoping every time you needed to compare one of these films to another you’d go “let’s talk about Cars 2” *musical intro* again and it would happen like 5 times

Noah Finch

I have the real beef with Jello apocalypse which is that when he was talking about Mira catching the heart he didn't mention that immediately afterwards zoey got fucking clobbered by the next heart. No other controversy is valid, only my very nonsensical rage. Also the scene in KPOP Demon Hunters where Huntrix fail to defeat the demons in time, and an entire packed subway train of people (including i believe several kids that had been recurring extras) are just dead and never come back --- that was a good ass scene. I think the main issue I have with K-Pop demon hunters is I don't think the transition between the scene with the mentor and rumi's breakdown plays well into the final song. It feels like we're missing a scene of Rumi all alone before having some internal revelation or remembering her friendship with Zoe and Mira --- instead she's kust kinda fine and it feels really abrupt.

JelloApocalypse

I watched exactly one of the seventeen thousand smurf reboots i don't remember which one, it's in the Kid's Choice Awards reviews somewhere

JelloApocalypse

I literally saved it for last because I heard it was really good and Amy and I watched it together and it was maybe my least favorite movie of the marathon. I feel insane.

Ash Midnight

Definitely agree with the idea of KPDH and being an animated film! It was so fun to see the characters being animated, especially loved the popcorn eyes when the girls are watching the Saja boys for the first time.

Copacetic_Cloud

I thought the same thing about the Wild Robot when it came out. One of my best friends at the time recommended it very highly to me, and after watching it I thought "oh, this must be the worst movie I've seen all year." If it was an artsy movie with no dialog where a robot takes care of a bird in an island full of wild animals, I would have liked. If it was a kids' movie about found family with bad jokes and mediocre writing, I would just have ignored it because I'm simply not interested, but people seem to treat it as the first, when it's very much just the second, and I really don't understand how such a big discrepancy even happened.

Plaidypus

While I'm not as harsh on the Wild Robot, I do see where you're coming from and I definitely agree that it's a flawed movie. Even when I watched it for the first (and only) time, I enjoyed it but certainly didn't think it was the masterpiece everybody hyped it up to be. And, if you'll allow, I'd like to throw my two (two and a half really) cents into the ring: 1) The movie immediately dips in quality when the animals start talking. It starts as a very interesting movie that could be about Roz having to learn how to interact with this alien, animal world, communicate with the animals nonverbally, we watch as the world changes her and she changes it in turn, yada yada standard stuff but could be cool if Roz was the only character who talked in the movie. But the instant she comes out of her “hibernation” and all the animals start talking it becomes a fairly generic, by the books animated kids movie and it’s a damn shame because I see the seed of what could have been great. 2) I think the pacing is a bit weird. Most of the film, especially early on, has this breaknecking pacing that kinda lacks intermediary falling action as it just keeps pushing to get to the next scene, the next montage, the next big moment. And the scenes where the audience is allowed to relax a bit and sit with these characters, learn about them, see how they interact and think are few and far between. It does settle down a little bit as the movie goes on but it’s still a present issue as the movie very quickly goes from crisis to crisis in the last act (from the harsh winter to the company showing up for Roz to the forest fire, etc.). And there is one thing emblematic of pacing issues in this movie. 2.5) That *damn* falcon. I have beef with that falcon because I swear they cut a scene with him from earlier in the movie and just forgot about it. Because his reveal of being the gosling’s flying instructor is played as a big payoff for the audience, in the style of “remember this character from the beginning of the movie? Well he’s BACK! [cue applause]” but he just isn’t in the movie before that scene. Well, okay, he might be in the movie, because it is “””implied””” that he’s the bird that snatches the gosling from earlier in the movie when Roz tosses him into the air to get him to fly. And from whom Roz saves the gosling *offscreen*. Like, there’s no connective tissue between those birds being the same bird other than I think there’s a falcon call in the earlier scene? But it’s so obvious that, if they are the same bird, there would have been a scene of Roz saving the gosling in the middle of that montage wedged right between the gosling getting grabbed and cutting to Roz having saved him. Maybe I’m just crazy, but it feels too perfect to not be the case. And if the movie wasn't so dedicated to keeping up its fast pace during that montage we probably would have gotten that scene. But the movie can't just slow down for a second to get a good scene in and it suffers for it constantly; this was just the most notable case to me. Apologies for the slight rant, anyways, I’m sorry the Wild Robot was a disappointment. But hey, at least you got to watch some good movies this time around.

Bob the human

A thing I wish they would have done was to give Moana a bunch of tattoos like Maui's, that would have been cool.

clottedscream

again i do think the best indictment you can give of how “????” the story of frankenweenie is is that i watched it briefly after the traumatic sudden death of my childhood dog, and the movie is about a boy who traumatically and suddenly loses his childhood dog, and yet i felt truly nothing through the entire film. my childhood dog died in my arms like 3 months before i watched frankenweenie. it should have been a shoe-in for this movie to get even a cheapshot emotional reaction out of me, and yet,

Roro

Ngl so many of those “people don’t like me cuz I’m weird” moments feel so out of touch to me. Like so many of them reek of some industry head going “so many bizarre people out there… ah I know how to help them!” And writing a story to show them that they can be “normal” and “accepted” too if they really try. Even when it’s done somewhat well, I feel like it’s such a pointless venture. Like thank you for trying, but stop being a coward and actually write a story with people who’re explicitly neurodivergent, or anything besides heterosexual. Grouping all people who are othered into the “weird” or “problematic” archetype is part of the problem. Sometimes people can just be different than you, and if you can properly write a story about them then that’s amazing. But ya gotta stop being reductive about people and talking them off some imaginary ledge so that they can be “normal”. Ya gotta stop.

RandomRedheadRi

The wild robot is a movie that I wanted to like so bad that I sorta gaslit myself into thinking it was extremely good at first, when in reality I agree about most of the story criticisms. Every time I've rewatched for one reason or another, I would pick up on another ten things that really didn't make sense, or were quite atonal. I DEFINITELY agree that it's very weird how the "model mother figure" hates her kids, to the degree that she's literally disappointed when she finds out that one of her kids who she thought died was still alive?! I get that it's a joke but you really can't have it be both ways. I think where I stand on the film now is that it's pretty background noise. I like the movie's score, and I think that the visuals (mostly the colors) are extremely pretty when I'm not paying too close attention to them. I do really enjoy the scene where the son flies away with the flock, but that's 100% just the score and the visuals doing the work rather than an emotional connection to the characters involved. I think that if this exact movie came out with more lackluster visuals and a less moving score, people's ratings of it would drop significantly 😕

JelloApocalypse

Moana should also get a little sentient tattoo but her guy should be like 3 feet tall because it would be funny

Julan

The Wild Robot truly was one of the most wild cases of recency bias for me. When I first watched it I really loved it, thought it was fantastic, the typical reaction most people seem to have had. When I finally sat down and watched it a second time... It was so baffling. Truly had me questioning what I was thinking at the time; I didn't have as much vitriol as you, but it just became so apparent how weird the pacing and story beats were for the flick. It tried to go for an in-between of an artistic film about a robot learning to communicate and coexist with animals, and a family comedy about the same thing but more slapstick than soul. I think this combo *could* have been pulled off, but it just didn't. Really wish we could have gotten a film that was almost devoid of dialogue, save for the robot's coming to capture her at the end maybe. That may have been more interesting. That being said, while the actual dramatic story beats aren't well written, I still give the movie a 5/10 because some of the humor, even from the talking animals, did get a good chuckle out of me. I like that dark joke about the possum describing herself as a mother of 7, only to nonchalantly correct to 6 when one gets eaten off screen. Anyways moral of the story is I can only really trust my opinion of a movie on the second watch.

Julan

Anyways you gave the Bad Guys 2 an 8/10 so you've proven your wisdom in my eyes.

JelloApocalypse

It sucks because the dark humor could absolutely work in a movie where they aren't trying to play the Joys of Motherhood shit so completely straight literally a double digit number of seconds from the "my child got eaten LMAO" line. It is insane. Realistically a 5/10 is much more fair and probably more accurate than my 3/10, but there's something that riles me so much about a hardcore miss that people are praising for qualities it doesn't have rather than an Illumination movie that didn't try at all and I suppose I am a spiteful creature at heart.

clottedscream

basalt pillars CAN be anywhere where magmatic activity happens. there are basalt pillars in the rockies

BeastAlchemistVA

I'm surprised with how generous you were with Moana 2. When I got through with watching it, I immediately forgot every song that was from it. I also thought it felt more like a "setup for a TV show" movie.

horde

(This is a friend of Zuki's that shares this account) So the reason maona 2 feels like a direct to dvd Disney sequel is because it was made the same way a lot of those were made where they canceled a Moana TV show they were making and stitched together the first 3 episodes of it together and called it Moana 2 which is also why they didn't get lin Manuel Miranda back

Hamyton

I miss Calp Clap :(

LuperisLua

I haven't watched any of these movies, except I had started watching The Day The Earth Blew Up, but after the farmer dad disappeared and they set up the base conflict about losing their house and established the dynamic between Daffy and Porky, I thought "eh i don't need to watch this" and went to bed, so ig it's neat to see that I didn't really miss much because yeah I have also never seen a movie where there's a duo of characters and one of them is The Problem and it's pulled off well.

BeastAlchemistVA

1:15:54 Jesus, Jello. That was an out of nowhere vent. (Said with humor)

LuperisLua

Also yay, vindicated for my Cars 2 opinions once again! Like, as a kid this was one of my favourites and nowadays it's not anymore, but I still like it for the spy aesthetic and how it looks. Because they're traveling around the world for the races/spy stuff, there's just a bunch of interesting locals, it's nice.

Daniel

You and I both know that one smurf movie is not enough to keep you out of rhe bronze bull

PurpleIsDebeste

the thing you’re talking about with the abrupt darkest hour is honestly one of my favourite things about the film. It feels like a more paint-by-numbers film would’ve made rumi’s aunt comfort her, or have rumi give a big speech that regains her love. but instead she just is mad at her mentor and moves on. she doesnt need to be reminded that she likes her friends or doesnt want people to die, she just goes and does it because she has to, even if she doesn’t have anyone to cheer her up kpdh’s biggest quality is its pacing just being really nonstop so i love that they don’t waste time before the big climax

Aggressively Nill

Mr Magoo Christmas Carol mentioned!!! Truly one of the best versions of the source, glad that someone else has actually seen it :)

Yali Litman

I know right? What is it Jello? Do you magically know where the cuts are now? Are you too good for clap clap now?

Yali Litman

Fine, you get promoted to the bronze smurf. Don't think we'll be this nice next time.

Blue Glasses

A lot of the times I disagree with jello on his opinions for movies (I personally really dug Flow), but I still understand how he came to his conclusions. That's always important for a good critic, so I can appreciate that. At the very least it'll make me overlook him not talking about how pretty Diane Foxington is in Bad Guys 2!

Friedrich the Bone spider

Because no one else has mentioned it, I watched some clips of Despicable Me 4 to sanity check you (I will not forgive you for subjecting me to that). I think I get what you mean? It does feel like she's animated in a way that's shorthand for "badass woman in an action movie," but that type of character is almost always heavily sexualized, and the movie unfortunately brought along that baggage.

Folkloric

Ah yes, demon satan. As opposed to non-demon satan.

BigMoffers

There’s a reason why there was so many Disney references in Wish. And that’s because this movie came out during its 100th anniversary. So they wanted to celebrate it by haphazardly sticking references at like the final draft. I don’t know much about it, but Wish is also known for having a LOT of scrapped concept. And if I had to guess, this movie was never made to be a 100th anniversary celebration movie for capitalism* (Disney) but because it’s Disney, they changed a lot of shit. There was an other whole main character they scrapped. The villain’s Wife was also supposed to be evil, making them an evil couple. Interesting ideas! Oh well, though!

JelloApocalypse

I still clap or snap while recording these but only because it's easy to see in the waveform so I use it as a shorthand for "go back here and edit in a bit"

JelloApocalypse

Jesus christ are you serious time really is a flat circle

horde

Yeah it's really bad, I'm pretty sure they had less then a year to turn what they had of the show into a movie

PrettiestBeardedLady

Being a Starkid fan since they started it's always fun when people talk about it especially since their musicals are such roller coasters of quality. Kinda hurts they get brought up during the talk about Wish lol also *nerdly pushes up glasses* Um Actually Burger Meister Meister Burger is from Santa Clause is Coming to Town, fake Christmas fan over here. I didn't hate the Wild Robot but I didn't like it either.

SonicPsycho

Kids can you lighten up -he said longingly

Muse

Not gonna lie I love when people treat Christianity like Greek or Egyptian mythology and add their own lore so I would love a 13th disciple OC story. Japan does that a lot with Jesus/Judas yaoi, particularly in the vocaloid space. A note on Wish, I don't blame the song writer too hard because they were given absolutely no context when writing the songs. They were basically told "write a song where the main character makes a wish" "Write a villian song" "write a revolution song" with no further context and nobody else who actually read the script did a passover

lakituh20

jello criticizes the wild robo for hating crabs, yet consistently praises in stars And time, another notable anti-crab game. we see how it is.

Muse

It makes so much sense when you listen to the songs again. The reason they're so generic and when they do state anything specific it often feels out of place and wrong. Magnifico being an alien or everything coming from stars mightve been in the synopsis given to the song writer and there was no communication and very little revision that the star thing didn't really matter in the final draft.

Bolt Vanderhuge

Not to compliment a show Jello already gave up on, but he started complaining about the trope where writers make a character be an obvious problem in The Day the Earth Blew Up. Which reminded me that one of the best things about Arcane Season 1 is how thoroughly they dodge most of the usual problems with that. Like the character is a problem, trying to work on it doesn't make the consequences go away, and the whole "family/frienship is most important" angle they are hinting at also gets partially rejected. Not perfect storytelling or anything, but definitely refreshing.

Elated Megalodon

It's very strange that Orion and the Dark has Charlie Kaufman attached to is somehow

Bryan Davie

"No one is gonna watch a 600 hour thing" Jello people willingly rewatch all of One Piece.

Benedict Ide

Ahahaha, man, I was going to quibble about KPDH, but then you were like "also Aloha had these specific criticisms which are valid" and they were exactly what I was going to say. To say it anyway: It does feel like it had some ideas that had to be streamlined out of it for the movie to work- like, the thing about the demons in demon world starving to death, the way the movie was thematically about freeing yourself from the grip of shame, it was a little weird they set that up just to go "and then all the bad guys were gone :) the end :)". Like, Rumi's big emotional breakthrough was giving up on the Honmoon and letting it be broken, the whole thing being a metaphor for repression and the aunt character's conceal-don't-feel thing. "Let the jagged edges meet the light instead", and all- and then the resolution was just "but don't worry they made a new one", which felt, like, thematically really off-kilter? It was obviously a topic they didn't really have time to get into the weeds of without sacrificing the pacing. Also yeah, this kind of thing is kind of contractually obligated to valorize the idol industry- I was watching this anime called Ave Mujica with this anime club I hang out with, and while it was doing some kinda cool and dark stuff with the idol industry setting, it kept clearly stopping short of critiquing the institution or saying anything that might suggest to the viewer that you should maybe not support this exploitative media machine. (The whole anime was, we later discovered, a promo for the real idol band of the same name.) It's inherently heroic and valuable that these girls are pushing themselves so hard for the sake of The Fans! Sure, we can wring some melodrama out of how hard it is for the protagonists to deal with the pressure, but we're never going to question the premise that the rabid idol audience must be catered to at all costs. I think those flaws bugged me more- but I don't think I'd go lower than an 8/10, because it's just such an achievement in terms of craftsmanship. Probably the most impressive possible version of the kind of thing it is.

Fug0th

Anything for the trophy!

Azelhia

I refuse to give KPop Demon Hunters any more thought than they put into the entire demon aspect of the world and characters - which is to say about 5 minutes worth - but my pettiest of grievances with the movie is it doing the whole "And then the skinny girls eat a shit-ton of food!" joke. I am fully aware it is more or less just a one-off gag, but while being inundated with gifs of that exact scene on social media with text about it being "so endearing that girls are allowed to be weird", I just keep thinking about how people only find that endearing because these characters are skinny and conventionally pretty. Especially with how that aspect ties into the glamourisation of one of the worst sectors of the entertainment industry that is famous for putting its entertainers on severe and harmful diets to keep up appearances. I dunno. If you wanna do that gag at least make one of your "intended to be attractive" characters fat you cowards. KPOP is like a 6-7/10 movie to me but it's a 6-7/10 that always invites a groan when I am reminded of its existence, purely for petty things like that. Also give your movie a fucking title this movie is two steps removed from being titled like a Homestuck joke.

Ziggy

It's not often you see a "wishes are good and everyone should have theirs fulfilled" story. Most of the time it's either "be careful what you wish for" or "there is one wish, deathmatch for it".

This whole comment chain reads like a tumblr post

Mebe_Chloe

I personally really enjoyed Flow, and I’m glad it got worldwide praise. It showed that an indie movie with long shots and no dialogue can resonate with so many people. I'm happy to see parents bring their kids to watch it, and there was a statistical increase in cat adoptions because of the movie. It's just nice that the success did universal good, even if there are flaws with the movie. When watching it, I guess I was more interested in the shots and animal animations, rather than water physics. Some shots with the water do look rough, but overall I still liked the way the movie looked. And what you said about the plot is valid. This may decrease your opinion on the film, but I watched Flow at a director QnA screening. He said that many parts of the film (like the bird flying in heaven scene) was intentionally open to interpretation. So that’s why parts of the plot may feel disconnected or “wait, wha?”. For some people they may despise that way of writing, but I guess I didn't mind as much for Flow. And yeah, I completely agree with your take on Wild Robot. I hated how sanitized the wilderness is. The winter scene especially infuriated me. Am I supposed to take this seriously? For a movie about a robot leaving an Amazon-like institution that’s customer-friendly all the time. The wilderness, and its denizens, felt the same to me, but with a different color palette. Maybe I’m reading too much into that aspect, but I dunno it made me wish I was watching Wall E or even Bambi instead. Also, as someone who’s watched Hop multiple times because it would be on tv often, it is one of most aggravating modern movies you could watch. It's the lowest rated Illumination movie on Letterboxd. So, uh, have fun with that.

Drednot

I really don't think anything can make me watch Kpop demon hunters, no matter how good I hear it is. Cause every clip I saw of it they'd make one of those over exaggerated faces. Specifically the one of the dark haired girl sniffing a sushi roll. I usually don't care about stuff like that, but there's something about the way specifically this movie animated it really skeeved me out.

Drednot

Good to know.

Drednot

I was worried it was gonna be kind of a constant problem.

PurpleIsDebeste

OH GOD NOT HOP hop is the only easter movie to ever be made, which means that you get to watch it in class every year between the ages of 4 and 13. it is an unwatchable movie. i HATE it. makes sense tho cus its remarkably illumination-like (DEROGATORY)

Ignis Astrorum

Love a stray "Tio says something also"

Kiran Nguyen

So glad you reviewed The Wild Robot cuz my sister had me watch it on a plane and my response after watching it was just “Why was this a movie?” so happy to see more criticism

Bolt Vanderhuge

Sleeping Beauty does not get enough credit for being the best pre-90s Disney animated movie. Might even be the only one that's still watchable

Roro

Instead of the star kid rally type song, I think I would actually prefer it if the show/movie just cut to a diagram of the hero’s journey and aggressively pointed to the part we’re currently at, more time efficient imo -.-

PurpleIsDebeste

“here, listen to it!” …do. do i have to? i’d really rather not. oh the clips playing already? okay!

Kruh-Daze

It’s a relief to see someone else didn’t like The Wild Robot. Everyone has been so over the moon about it; I thought it was mid at best.

Kruh-Daze

Agreed. With some things I think “This isn’t for me but I can see why people like it.” But with this movie, the acclaim is headscratching.

Noah Finch

I like that nobody pushes her onwards, and I really like that Rumi's Aunt sucks, but I think she should have started the final battle still too distraught to actually win, but before bring defeated has some sort of personal realization or memory of zoe and mira and then starts the final song.

Roro

Benedict Ide

Just watched Dog-Man, because I heard "like Axe Cop, bizarre watch, ping-pongs wildly between tones" and was like, that sounds like a movie for me. And like, I wouldn't call it a new favorite or anything (it sure is a kids' movie-ass kids' movie as far as dialogue writing goes), but man do I not regret watching that. Specifically for that one long sequence where the police chief opens a desk drawer and pulls Dog-Man into a secret passage, where they run through these underground catacombs and open a secret vault and then climb up into... the desk's other drawer, where he pops out and grabs a shoebox that was lying right there under the desk. Primo stuff. Apparently the writer/director on this one did Animaniacs back in the day, and it shows.

Millie Can

Kudos to you for creating a comment with so many different shades of weird. Feels like the main thing worth pointing out is; character's only being allowed to have "weird" character traits or moments if they are also not conventionally attractive is, maybe not the progressive statement you thought it was.

Noah Finch

I'm pretty sure at least that they don't make a golden honmoon, they just kinda start the process of the honmoon over, implying that the golden honmoon is possibly centuries away now.

Noah Finch

When does Jello talk about Arcane?

Azelhia

When the "weird" character trait or moment is directly in conflict to the industry the movie is glamorizing and is also something that, if done by a fat character, would be treated as a punchline - yeah. If a fat character ate like the skinny characters do in that scene, you'd have lines about it being the creator's secret fetish thrown around. Also no characters are allowed to be conventionally attractive any more, I've made it the law.

Bolt Vanderhuge

He doesn't. I just brought it up as an example of a show which avoids the specific thing Jello was complaining about. IIRC Jello previously said he only watched the first few episodes of Arcane, but I have no idea if that was in an older Patreon review collection or an unrelated stream.

JelloApocalypse

Dog Man rapidly swings back and forth between 4/10 moments and 10/10 moments for me, it's a really singular experience.

JelloApocalypse

I like YELLOW mustard, drinking dijon mustard sounds gross. Obviously. :)

Roro

Gotta say, I was not expecting you to contest THAT part of what I said, but this certainly is the funniest rebuttal T-T I’ll make sure to plant mustard seeds all over this hill you’ve chosen to die on o7

sad homeless ant walking away because my favorite pokemon is farigiraf from gen 9

JelloApocalypse

Farigiraf, Lechonk/Oinkologne, and Tinkaton are the rare exceptions.

AssuredlyReal

Huh, I was so sure there were weviews of Flow and Wish on here already. Definitely remembered the joke about "what if Cruella DeVille randomly said in her villain song, "And also I want to be immortal!"" maybe it came up during a stream or something lol

AssuredlyReal

Watched The Wild Robot tonight, it's such a weird movie, it's like they wanted to recreate Wall-E but with 10x the dialogue and went, "well, people really liked spiderverse so we need a really distinctive style, even if it's not good". and oh my god you CAN see where the skybox touches the ground a lot of the time. It's weird too, the way everything is out of focus. There was a scene early in that took me out of it, where the grass in the foreground was blurred because it's close to the camera so it's out of focus, but then some butterflies fly in and they're in crystal clear view despite being on the blurry grass and flying toward the middleground. It's just for a second, but there's a lot of weird focus/blur issues like that in the movie.

Moshuma

I only saw the intro up to the first ceremony of Wish, so I just have to say he has a valid concern about not granting bad wishes, although being very strict about it, but why does he suddenly become sadistic to be "take a front row seat of how much I hate you" afterwards? And its obvious not every wish gets granted if its only a few a year; why was that a revelation to the main character? Wild Robot just makes me ask so many questions. How smart is the bot that it can translate animal speech but not know how a goose swims and survives? She's so bad at it until Fink shows up. And why does it do that in the first place? Why do the other geese try to kill the main one upon meeting him, especially if they know hes under watch by the "monster" whom they think can just murder them? Why are a select few of the animals nice to the robot if they have no benefit to talking to it? I thought it was nature based, but no, it flip flops to being just people, which is the thing that probably annoyed me the most. Like things just decide to happen for the plot once it stops being about nature and it did start to bug me. Every animal has to suck at surviving the winter to show its about community and motherhood now, in which they even say its a momentary truce, so as soon as the snow is gone, it's worthless. Roz powers on at an empty battery to finish the fight scene where the robots were all so weak and getting demolished by the animals. Why are these, essentially Titanfall 2 Reapers that shoot fire, falling to a couple rams from an animal? She also remembers the wilds at the end after being reset because it needs to be emotional now, because I suppose the techs at the factory didn't wipe everything it knew. It just felt wrong for that at the end and the hesitating to return to the factory because up until that point, everything that wasn't training Brightbill (was that his name?) has completely sucked.

you’re definitely right that kpdh has pretty terrible body diversity and all of the principle characters have the body types of barbie dolls but i feel like having them eat a lot is weirdly progressive?? like, irl being fat is mostly genetics. people can eat a lot and be skinny or eat very little and be fat. but thats not a widely accepted thing despite being scientifically backed. and in most movies characters who eat a lot are fat. so a film having fat characters who dont eat a lot or (like kpdh) skinny characters who do eat a lot, by showing that body type and diet are largely unrelated, weirdly makes it better about fatphobia than like 80% of films??? which is sad, cus thats a low bar! but its the wrong place to be firing shots (also the other reply calling your comment weird has big “they must have been on drugs when they made this” energy)

JackofCoins

You know, I enjoyed Strange World but I honestly would only give it a 6/10 so I can't really quibble with your rating. I was probably influenced by the fact that I watched it with my brother and his fiancee, and they're both big Disney fans.

Millie Can

You wound me. In all seriousness, I decried the initial comment as "weird" because I couldn't pin down what about it felt so off. In retrospect it's written with the structure of a well thought out and progressive point, but it's arguing that skinny characters aren't allowed to 'act fat' a sentiment which is Yikes, and later that fat characters acting fat is more likwly to be identified as fetish bait which is actively untrue. You're very correct about the body diversity or lack there of and I think it's mainly due to Hollywood being cowards and toxic beauty standards being something even would be progressive movies can't escape, see the whole Wicked debacle as further proof. (The only drugs I'd diagnose them to be on is Tumbr tbh)

Jello for the Love of All that is good don't watch hop. I remember hating it even as a child who had no goddamn standards. Awful.

Hamyton

I haven’t watched the wild robot, but from the sounds of it and the reviews, it sounds like a really good media literacy level up movie where like the 1000000+ people who watched it where like “wow theming and emotion” and in 3-4 years time the will sit down to watch it as a fun rewatch and go “ohhh this was bad the whole time… oh no”

Loke Ho

i remember the fakeout at the end of strange world just pissing me off. It was so fucking obvious they are just wasting my time. Also i remember getting the trailer for wish and thinking wow this looks like they *wish* they had a better movie idea because that trailer was dogshit. Even my partner whos zealously into disney didnt see what they were going for. I never thought of that movie until this very review, so thanks for that

I'm really glad you liked Kpop Demon Hunters! Not only was it a solid movie, it also meant a lot to me as a Kpop fan for 1.5 decades. I'm also very aware of the deeply problematic aspects of Kpop that the movie didn't even cover, but honestly, I didn't have an issue with it because, like you said, I think it was a good choice to introduce the audience to this world in a simpler, more whimsical way first. I'd also love to see a sequel where they explore the problematic aspects in more depth. If I were to write a sequel myself, it'd be about toxic fan culture - fan wars, bodyshaming, hating, and how parasocial relationships can lead to crossing boundaries (e.g., boycotting idols for dating). It'd be fascinating to see how HUNTR/X would adapt in a world without demons, one that they might perceive to be safe, only to realize that their fans can be equally as harmful without supernatural forces at play. Also, respectfully to Aloha, I hope I don't come across as dismissive of his experiences as someone of mixed race, which I'm not. I just didn't read the ending the way he did - it was pretty obvious to me that "embrace every part of yourself, even the ones that other people may think are shameful" was a core message of the movie. During "What It Sounds Like", Rumi embraces her demon patterns and shows them to the world - that's why the patterns became rainbow colored. The lyrics also go "my scars are part of me / darkness and harmony", which I think enforces that underlying message. Where I concede that the movie made things unclear is that they did seal the honmoon, so it does seem contradictory that all demons would be sealed away while Rumi embraces her half demon lineage. In this Cosmopolitan interview (timestamp included), Director Maggie Kang points out that the honmoon was rainbow and not golden, which is a lot more uncertain than "demons are not sealed away forever": https://youtu.be/KVndGYHjp7U?si=CED-0C-b5eC-07xX&t=350 That said, she admitted that even she doesn't know what that means, and it shows in the movie as flimsy logic in exchange for a "happy" ending.

If you count Pixar I’d say the last great Disney film was Coco

JelloApocalypse

Honestly I wish I was watching it with people who were enjoying it. It would've been a lot nicer.

JelloApocalypse

Yeah I mentioned it during a stream and I even said "I'm definitely using this joke in the review so sorry if you hear it twice"

Folkloric

I’m still tickled by “He is—one of us! He has [ALWAYS] been one of us!”

Probably An Owl

I feel like the two easiest ways to explain my disdain for Tim Burtin is 1. Point out who actually did all the work, and 2. Gesture towards Del Toro and the gothy fantasy movies the Hensen company worked on and just say "he wants to be this so bad"

Probably An Owl

Also, as a big fan of that era of black and white monster movies. I FUCKING HATE FRANKEN WEINER. It feels like it was made by someone who had those movies described to them mid blunt rotation

Jello why didn't you like Encanto? I thought it was really good

Call me pessimistic conspiracy theorist, but I do truly believe that there is a very real subsection of the big budget animation industry that specifically caters to parents who don't like their children and just want something to keep them quiet for an hour and a half. These parents probably won't even watch these movies with their kids, but if their kids watch a movie where the parents actually learn that they should treat their children like people, the kids watching the movie might start expect the same from THEIR parents. And the parents who bought the movie are NOT going to like that. That's why so many of them have this tone of "The only reason it SEEMS like your parents suck is because it SUCKS to be a parent. I'm sure they actually love you and are perfectly justified in their poor parenting." The parents don't even have to do anything. All they have to do is sit back and let their kids internalize that unhealthy family dynamics are normal. (Keep in mind that everyone benefitting from this is likely having all of these thoughts with about twelve layers of denial because we do live in a society that cares about LOOKING like a good parent).

A good way to describe KPop Demon Hunters is that it's a masterpiece that has very obviously been cropped to fit a frame it's too big for

Is this in response to the songwriting or the Christian yaoi

I will say at least Strange world introduced me to electric swing music....

Jello Christmas track when?

Man the animate movie trope post sure is interesting, surely after the lemonade video it’s the next thing on the list *checks note* …oh

ABOUT ORION AND THE DARK I just found out that it was written by Charlie Kaufman. His work includes Anomalisa, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Synecdoche, New York. His bread and butter is reflective pieces that wax philosophical, but crucially, this is the first thing he has written for children and I think it shows. It's why the jokes are oddly paced, and crucially it's why the film is like *that* about storytelling. It was like Kaufman was trying to bring his philosophical touch this movie but was like, "well children are fucking dumb so I'm gonna over-explain it and oversimplify" or perhaps, "Oh it's a children's movie so I don't even need to try think about what I'm actually saying." I just find this all really funny.

Listening to the section on Starkid rally songs, and I swear like half of the songs in Newsies are this exact template. They do the “we’re gonna unionize and stop Mr. Pulitzer” song like eight separate times. Why is Newsies like this

I went to the Tim Burton gallery in the Design museum with my university. I was obsessed with him as an edgy teen and I went in hoping seeing it might help me appreciate him a little more. Was very cool but A. It has only convinced me further that Tim Burton is a little bit of a hack or at minimum a one trick pony that can only write about his average suburban childhood and feeling like an outcast (for some reason but whatever). And B. You were right about the napkin joke. I saw them.

I've been looking for a comment to verify this because I was too afraid to watch myself, thank you for your service brave soldier

You know, I used a lot of words to express this thought, but I feel like Lindsay Ellis explained this pretty concisely in her Miss Rachel video where she says (and I'm paraphrasing here) "since conservatives believe that a womans place is in the home, rather than being one of many activities that can be used for parent-child bonding, the TV becomes a box that the overworked mother who needs some time to herself turns on to turn the child off"

I'd love to compare Migrations and Wild Robots "You're a duck/gosling get out of here you're wierd you're not normal you're a freak!!" scene TM to see how similar and bad they are. You know it's bad when I'm comparing the Wild Robot to an illumination movie.
