If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lie down. If it's white, good night.

I'm an expert in all types of bears (including e-bears), here's a few tiny corrections for the episode: - You don't ride a bear piggyback, you ride it bearback. - Bear speed is typically measured in killometers per hour.

There was a great bear fight in Prey (the Predator franchise movie). The alien is searching for the apex predator of earth in 1800s great plains and the bear is an early fight. They did an excellent job getting the sheer power of the bear across (I assume grizzly). Gave ol predator a run for his money, I’ll tell ya what.

No were-bears in mythology? Never heard of Berserkers? You were almost there with Tolkien, who certainly read a Norse Saga or two. I’d recommend “ The Saga of King Hrólf Kraki” as a place to start on your viking were-bear journey.

There are also several versions of the formation of the Pleiades in Inuit folktales in which a bear family masquerades as human beings but will put on their bear skins to hunt for food. This family takes in a woman who has run away from her husband due to grief at the loss of her child. They feed and shelter the woman for awhile, but she grows homesick and eventually returns to her husband. Although she promises the bears that she won’t reveal their secret, she tells her husband “I have seen bears!” The husband then gathers a hunting party to attack the bears. The Papa bear, hearing the men approach, kills his family rather than allow them to be killed by the men, and then goes out and kills the woman they had previously sheltered. As the bear is coming out of the woman's house he is attacked by the hunters and their dogs. As the bear flees the men and dogs they are all swept up into the sky to form the stars of the Pleiades.

You forgot to mention that we, sort-of, no longer know the true name of the bear! One, very simplified story goes that the old germanic, slavonic and baltic peoples didn't want to utter the true name of the bear for fear of summoning it and so called it by other names, like "the brown one" in northwestern Europe which morphed into our word "bear", "The shaggy one" in the Baltics and "the honey-eater" in eastern Europe and Russia which became the current name "medved". Additionally, it is believed the base word in Proto-Indo-European, which came before all the above, meant something like "The Destroyer". So we collectively erased the true name of the brown shaggy honey-eating one from our languages because we just feared it so much. (More and better reading about this can easily be found online)

You didn't give us all the facts about bears, just the bear necessities.

I was up north the other year, left on an icebreaker from svalbard and voyaged as far as 83° north. One day the captain stopped the boat in the middle of the frozen ocean, and ice reformed all around the boat within the hour. Shortly after, two polar bears walked right up to the hull to investigate us. Apparently that's a sure way to find polar bears- they're hoping the boat might be a beached whale. I learned a lot about polar bears on that trip, but the most interesting thing I learned is that because of climate change, Ring Seal populations are dwindling. And so, the usually solitary Polar Bear have been seen hunting in packs to take on walruses. Walruses are normally too dangerous for a polar bear to attempt hunting. The bears are getting desperate and they are socially adapting.

If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lay down. If it's Lackey, it's whacky. If it's Fifer, give it a fiver? Find a bagpiper? It'll be a friend for lifer?

Polar bears get lumped in with aquatic mammals because of how much time they spend in the water.

Colin Mochrie put out a fun wilderness survival guide, some years ago. The main points of the bear encounter portion was that Not all brown bears are brown and not all black bears are black (exasperated sigh). Here is the series, the bear segment is the first 25 minutes or so (after a short killer bird intro) https://youtu.be/ms0OEND0wIc?si=6ccGt0FARTFFGTkj

The crazy thing about Polar Bear evolution is how they somehow keep getting their paws on Coca-Cola. On the topic of werebears: The Dragonborn dlc for Skyrim features werebears. And the main god who acts as a sorta deuteragonist is straight up a Lovecraft reference. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, y'all could've done weird bear month on the old show.

If Chad is looking for were-bear content that can be covered on the show he should look up French author Prosper Mérimée's horror-fantasy novella LOKIS (1869). The title is an intentional misspelling of the Lithuanian word "lokys" for "bear" and the plot revolves around a young man who is suspected to being a were-bear. An English translation is available for free online via BYU: https://merimee.byu.edu/works-2/lokis/ It was also adapted into a 1970 Polish film titled  "Lokis: A Manuscript of Professor Wittembach" and is considered a classic of the folk-horror genre and is free to watch (with Eng subtitles) on Tubi.

It's funny how you guys do a weird bear month and suddenly bears are trending with the "would you rather run into a bear or a random guy?" question.

Jeff VanderMeer also did Borne which features a Kaiju bear, and it has been optioned. I'm hoping on the back of Annihilation we'll see it soon.

Why are there more werewolf stories than werebear stories? Maybe it's because wolves are more like humans than bears are, so it's easier to think of a guy being a wolf than a guy being a bear. There's a reason why we eventually became best friends with the nicer types of wolves, but our relationship with bears has rarely developed beyond a collegial professional respect.

"Let the bear know you're human..." That's why bears have evolved to be expert administrators of the Voight-Kampff test

One of my favorite animated shorts is The Bear That Wasn't. A 1967 Chuck Jones cartoon based on a children's book by Frank Tashlin. It's about a bear that hibernates, and a factory is built over its cave. When it wakes up, its mistaken for a factory worker and put to work. No matter how many times it tries to explain that it isn't human, no one believes it. The cartoon is very funny, but I also find it emotionally resonates with me. The relatable feeling of being put in a role that doesn't fit who you are. I think the original story was meant to be about being a creative in a corporate world. here's a YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW6EIUx9Ui4&ab_channel=BittersweetCartoon

"Boozy Fruit Bears" actually are delicious snacks. All you need to do is soak gummy bears in vodka in the fridge for a few days. Just be careful switching out the gummies. I used peach rings once & they swelled up to twice their size into slimy puckered pink doughnuts. They looked like… well, you can probably guess.

Having grown up in a family where The Great Outdoors was an annual watch, I remember it well enough to say there's only one scene that stands out as not aging great. It's the poolhall scene where the eldest son meets a local girl. It's not terrible, but the camera leers a bit too long for comfort.

It's simple, to let a bear know you're human - just quickly perform a captcha test on your phone as it's charging you.
