As someone whose favorite animal is the Virginia opossum, I am VERY cross that we're stuck with teddy bears.

Really, Billy Possum for Taft? Not Billy Elephant? Heh heh heh

Hi guys, long time listener. Nothing to comment about this episode but I wanted to say thank you for everything you both and everyone else does for this and on this podcast. I’ve been actively listening and Re-listening to this podcast for almost 6 years now at work. I’m a janitor who works 8 hours a day so your podcast keeps me sane from doing the “same old things” everyday. Each time I catch up to the new episodes, I go all the way back to episode 1 and start over. Loving it each and every time. Again thank you so much.

Godzilla coverage? Looks like it's time to up my subscription.

If you're doing an anthology as part of the fundraiser, it would be great if you could get some living friends of the show/former guests/etc. involved (like j.r. hammentaschen, Patton, ken hire, etc.).

It's a Ghost.

Since weird bear month, I've been seeing bears all over the place too! . . . At first I wondered if there were just more reports about bears than usual, but now I suspect my brain has simply been attuned to the the existence of bears, so now whenever I see a picture or report about one, my brain says, "Ooh, look, it's a bear!"

Calendar Month Themes? Jan Martense Uary (The Lurking Fear) March is for Draculas What month is for Werewolf Ghosts? Or cats locked in the 4th dimension? You've a special cat that fits this bill, but I sadly forget its name.

Cole Caron

You’ve thrown around the idea of an “animal revenge story” month before and I think the format shift of the new show makes this possible.

I love how just weeks after the first annual (right?) Weird Bear Month finished, the internet (or at least Mastodon) got eaten by the man VS bear question (asked if they'd rather be left alone in the woods with a man or a bear, most women by a significant margin opted for the bear). Also, anyone who wants more bears in their speculative fiction, check out The Man Who Spoke Snakish by Andrus Kivirähk (same guy who wrote the novel that crazy Estonian horror film November was based on). This novel concerns a tiny clan of people who have resisted converting to Christianity and living in town, preferring to stay in the forest and remain close friends with the animals. Some of them are very close indeed, as many of their women take bears as lovers and even marry bears. Who are apparently just irresistible to Forest women. It's super weird and cool and a little sad because it chiefly concerns the last man to grow up in the forest and how their weird culture will probably die with him. Especially since he doesn't have kids and his sister won't either because she has a special bear in her life.

I think we're very fortunate that bears don't usually wear pants, as in accordance with the Albright Rule, it decreases the likelihood that they'll learn how to start a small business or learn Microsoft Excel for dummies. Humanity is saved. Although in light of Chad's comment about bears having discovered fire and decided no thanks, it may be that bears would discover Excel Tips for Dummies and also choose to walk into the forest and never return.

Yikes! Well, as great as it was to hear one of my comments read on the show it would have been a whole lot nicer if I hadn’t misinterpreted what you were saying in Extra Credit 022. Sorry about that. I even listened to the episode a couple of times and still managed to mangle the meaning. Even so, glad to have started the discussion on King Kraki and both Jim Cannon and Eldritch Golem followed up with really interesting comments. I’m not a huge sci-fi fan but I have read and enjoyed some Poul Anderson in the past and am very curious about his take on the Kraki saga. Sorry again!

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman has armored Viking Polar Bears with flamethrowers.

I love a good theme. Bears, Draculas, werewolves…Also very fond of that month you did way back of anatomy stories from Supernatural Horror (“The House and the Brain”, “The Beast with 5 Fingers”, etc.). I wonder if something like four stories with similar beats would be interesting. Like there’s got to be way more than 4 “turns out I’M the monster” stories in the annals of Weird Tales. Could be fun to compare and contrast on something like that.

If you’re into medians (who isn’t??), I highly recommend the book “Outside Lies Magic” by John Stilgoe. It’s a history of how roads, telephone poles, power lines, railways, fences and other human artifacts have transformed the American landscape and how traces of the past remain if you know what you’re looking at. It’s especially aimed at hikers, walkers, bicyclists and other people who travel around outside of cars.

Your podcast is always wonderful, but for me personally… bears…. eh…. I’d like them better if they were reptiles

I definitely expected a gotcha moment at the end of the first episode for weird bear month. I thought for sure it was going to just be an april fools. I'm glad I was proven wrong.
