Attack of the Home Depot Skeleton!

I haven't listened to the episode yet but am very excited for it. I live near CAS' home town and have started a zine covering a more local view of Smith. An example is tracking down the actual physical PO Box in which Smith probably received letters from HLP and others. And creating a Smithian walking tour. So can't wait to hear your thoughts on the story. https://clark-ashton-smithery.blogspot.com/?m=1

I went back to listen to Colossus of Ylourgne, episode 530 and 531 but even with my paid sub episode 531 is still locked. Anyone else having issues with some older episodes?

All of the governments in Zothique are some form of evil or another except for the ghoul cult of Mordiggian, who seem to be neutral at worst. King Euvoran is a man-baby who gets cranky when his enforcers don’t find enough criminals to torture for his entertainment. King Adompha is a serial killer who grafts the body parts of his victims onto plants in his secret garden. King Hoaraph is always sending out Zobal and Cushara to purchase beautiful women and drag them back to his castle. Famorgh of Miraab is mostly described as growing “old and senile amid his debaucheries,” but he seems like one of those insecure partiers who can’t stand it when other people abstain. He’s also a terrible father who raised his daughter into a spoiled brat with magic powers. In context, Zotulla actually seems like one of the top three monarchs of his era. No wonder the evil gods have returned. And no, I didn’t make any of these names up.

Chad’s comment about pitching shopping malls on his Zothique store concept reminds me of hearing him say once that employees working across the very wide range of mall jobs have more in common with each other than they do with people in their same exact line of work but who are based in a street-facing location, and that it was his experience that people moved with ease from job to job within the mall, their main qualification being that they had already been working in the mall. By this logic, an applicant to Zothique who had experience selling sad wizard based t-shirts at a stand-alone shop would be passed over in favor of someone whose C.V. consisted of their name and the statement “Been working at Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, and Foot Locker before that.” Is this about right?

Am I the only one that took the gods at the end to be him turning his back on his evil god for the lovecraft elder gods

This is a dramatic retelling of when I moved into my neighborhood and set up my 12' Home Depot skeleton Halloween decoration!! I don't have a 12' Home Depot skeleton yet though so it is a work of prophecy.

The Spider Incident

It wasn't until nearly the end of the episode that I realized the god's name was "Thesayden" and not "The Satan" Also that outro music was perfect this week, Chad

Jerome Arnold

I've used Thasaidon as a patron for a warlock in a D&D campaign. Also, might need to put all the Clark Ashton Smith stories in there own collection. He's been covered quite a bit, which I'm truly thankful for.

Rest in Power The Double Shadow: A CAS Podcast. I salute you, Phil, Ruth, and Tim - wherever you are.

Eldritch Scerry

When Chad, describing Zothique, said “as florid as this story is…” I initially heard “as Florida as this story is…” and it didn’t change the craziness and actually provided some grounded context.

Thesaidon sounds like he's Neutral Evil, I guess? "Live and let live, do evil" is his motto. Very far from the Stephen King Theory of Evil Defeats Itself. If Thesaidon really was a dark god of evil and shadows and such, he would be all in on some stupid pointless revenge scheme, so long as somebody got hurt and lots of lives got ruined. Oh, maybe he's Lawful Evil. "You got something out of it, now shut up." Yeah, that's the ticket.

Slightly off topic, but I'm getting old and starting to worry that our time together may run out before someone gives Henry James' vast, swollen social novels the Pride & Predjudice & Zombies treatment (The Providentials, Portrait of a Lamia, The Wings of the Skeletal Dove, etc) and hires Andrew Leman to narrate the audio books. It's gonna be a big job but I'm willing to try if I can find some co-authors, etc. We could make literally pennies!

Andrew Brown

Is there a good audiobook treatment of these stories?

Fantasy names make good pharmaceutical names, and the reverse is also true. I've long thought that the erectile dysfunction drugs would all make good elf names. You could take that "Elbereth Gilthoniel" poem from Tolkien and swap in "A Cialis Tadalafil, Viagra Sildenafil..." and few would notice. (I mean, you'd probably have to say it "vee-ah-gra" just to disguise it a little.)

Something that just occurred to me during this episode: Have you ever thought about how swole all these sorcerers' legs must be from the stairs in their towers? And in the scene where Namirrha was, "lying prone on the curved interior of that dome, with his face over the abyss, and his long beard trailing stiffly into space, he whispered...," I pictured him as the Lich from Adventure Time doing it but holding his head up with both hands and his legs bent up and kicking gently, back and forth, behind him. Like a teenage girl's phone call to a boy. This story is marvelous.

I spent a lot of time in a dictionary on this one: simooms, hautboys and alembics......Oh! My! Mr Smith certainly had a way with words though!

KateSherrod

Finally went and looked at the CAS illustration and... does anyone else get an All Tomorrows vibe off it? I would not be surprised to learn that C.M. Köseman had taken inspiration for a few of his future mutated humans from this drawing!

Mooncubus

I'll never get tired of hearing Andrew reading. Think it's time for another listen of the Colossus.
