In this Thewly bonus, we're jibber-jabbering about the 1983 low-budget flick CONQUEST! It's a trip!

Conquest is wonderful, that Fulci Fog is as prevalent in his films as Woo’s Doves. I always got a Quest for Fire meets Beastmaster by way of Clash of Titans vibe out if it, which makes sense since all three of those movies were released within a year or two before Conquest. The Italians were kings of jumping on whatever the most recent hot genre was and cranking out a huge number of what normal people say are ripoffs but what fans say are are gold. Give me a 70s/80s Italian film of any genre from Poliziotteschi to Post Apocalyptic to Giallo over the big bugdet American inspiration any day.

Great episode and appropriate conclusion to Thew-ly. Years ago you teased doing a bonus episode on 'The Last Dragon', Chris sounded VERY enthusiastic about it. Maybe give that a visit in 2025?

I would definitely put Clash of the Titans and the other Harryhausen fantasy films (Sinbad, Golden Fleece, etc.) in the Sword & Sorcery genre. A little more respectable and less sweaty than your Swords and Sorcerors, Outlaws of Gor, Deathstalkers, and Yors, Hunters From the Future and such. But still in the same basic ballpark. Closer in spirit, at least, to Conan the Barbarian than Lord of the Rings. Heck, I think technically the Pirates of the Caibbean movies count!

The only part of this movie I have seen is the killer bushes which someone showed me because it is so ridiculous. However, you kinda make it sound awesome

BTW, if you ever want to make modern HD movies look like blurry 80s VHS movies, just watch pirated versions of modern movies recorded from a movie screen with a hand camera. You’ll feel transported back in time!

Episode 199 -- The Vampyre. Minute 25:45. Chad: " 'Poor Polidori, as Mary Shelley later reported, had a terrible idea about a skull-headed lady.' I have to differ with Mary Shelley's opinion there, that sounds like an incredible idea." Paid off by Fulci 167 years later.

Film and novel series in the zeitgeist influencing a lot of these films is Clan of the Cave Bear. Peoples shown in a simpler or more animalistic way, early cultures interacting, and primitive myth as background was very popular. I'm not sure if Daryl Hannah is an anthropologist, I don't think the author was an anthropologist, but this novel series was so popular at the time, igniting a real cave-mania!

I know its late, but just wanted to add the animated "Heavy Metal" film from 1982 has several segmetns that fit firmly into the sleezy sword and sorcery genre, as well as "Barbarian Queen" (1&2).
