I picked up and ready the whole Jirel collection after you guys covered “the Black God’s Kiss” and I was a little bit disappointed. Most of them didn’t capture the magic of that first story, but “Hellsgarde” and “Jirel Meets Magic” were highlights. The latter story in particular because it has a female antagonist, so Jirel gets to do something other than trying to kiss or trying to avoid kissing the handsome antagonist of the week. The climax of that one is also a really cool inter-dimensional set piece action scene that begs for some kind of screen adaptation. “Hellsgarde” stood out because it makes good use of ghost story framing and the ending manages to wrap up the real plot neatly while only raising more questions. Why was something moving in the treasure box? How does one become a ghost eater? What does a ghost taste like, and is it really so good that you’re left with no other choice but to wander, strung out, in search of more ghosts like the Scooby Doo gang following a Phish tour?

I'm not sure if such a display might be available at home depot, but that is absolutely what I'm telling the police when they come to ask me about my lawn corpses. "Oh these? They were on sale." As others have pointed out, this one had a lot of taints. I think we can consider that a notable achievement. This was great, I'll have to check out some more Jirel.

Jim Cannon

Ghost eaters? That is honestly super cool. I expected them to be phantoms of some kind too, what with the Darkvision 60' and being able to eat rotting food and misshapen appearances and such. But those were just side effects of their addiction. I wonder what other ghost powers they have?

Thew-lyin' Vincent Price just collapsed the podcast into a singularity, I'm pretty sure. Looking forward to exploring this new universe in which Gene Wolfe is a Nobel laureate for literature, Sindbad played Nelson Mandela in that genie movie, and H.P. Lovecraft lived long enough to see the error of his ways and as an old man heroically took a bullet for Medgar Events. Also, all the kudos to Heather on her finest performance yet. I think *I* got high off that last passage. Chef's kiss!

Vintage Season is another prime Moore story. The 90s movie Grand Tour: Disaster in Time with Jeff Daniels was based on thiss story. It was also known as Timescape.

Derrick Mcmullin

I wonder if Tim Powers had this story in mind when he wrote "expiration date". That book deals with people who ingest ghosts to maintain thier immortality and are portrayed as junkies always seeking the next fix.

MonsterTalk

Taint jokes are perineal classics.

Eldritch Scerry

Unkempt Lackeys? Sounds like a great family Halloween costume.

When will our beloved podcast produce an official calendar with Thewly, March is for Draculas etc?

It's a Ghost.

The ghost eaters were a fantastic, weird surprise, but I also wish Jirel could have saved the day herself. For this and related reasons, I think I liked last week’s story more. Alyx just seemed to have so much more agency in her life, and although the fact she was a woman was definitely a part of the story, it also felt like she was just doing her thing. Like, Jirel was fully capable of coldly killing the guard (even though she was a woman), but she also had to call up the ghost of Andred, allowing him to kiss her while Alaric and his people defeated Andred through their music and dancing. While, on the other hand, Alyx straight up stole into the tower, got past all the traps and barriers, broke the fat man’s back, and then smothered him to death. And then afterwards she went home to the husband she loved and who loved her and casually made light of all her badassery.

Is this story the earliest recorded Rick Roll?

I don’t know what your plans are for Derleth, but I would recommend “The Lonesome Place” for some episode soon. The podcast “Encrypted” just did a great reading if you want to give it a preemptive listen prior to making a decision. Addendum: you could do a month of lonely places. Stories like the above and “The Horror-Horn” by CF Benson?

Jason Thompson

I’ve been listening to the podcast “Let’s Not Meet” where listeners submit true horror stories of creepy encounters. And surprise! 75% of it is women talking about creepy men! BUT about 2% of the time they mention in passing that the creep was “handsome”. That is what I was thinking about listening to this story about the handsome evil guy

Apollo Sitting Up

Damn. Ghost feasts? You’re right this story lost me till the end and paid off. Side note: if anyone wants to get Draculated early I recommend the Vampire Hunter D series. It’s mixing well with this program.

Finally after 4 years of listening I've caught up. I've always had a surreal voices out of time feeling while listening. Listening on overnight shifts always added an extra creepy factor to every story that something unknowable was just out side looking in.

Two quests collide in a whirling frenzy! Everyone else noticed the taint, but someone should do a word count on 'whirling'! Jirel held her own on this pretty well - she was up against something not necessarily in anyone's wheelhouse. +2 creativity points to CL Moore for the wicked eaters of undeath!

Cloven Sunfish

Hooray! So glad you guys covered this. It's Moore's second-best Jirel story - after "Black God's Kiss" - in my opinion. Immaculate spooky, gothic vibes throughout, and I don't think anyone in that first generation of sword-and-sorcery authors hits quite the same tone as Moore does here.

Drasferatu

You have the best outro jams.
