We're talking vampire movies including Blood Red Sky, 30 Days of Night, Vamp, Kingdom and more! Drac it up!

Chiming in early in the episode to point this out—in Blade: Trinity, Dominic Purcell isn't just Dracula. He's DAGON. I have no idea why, but they actually had Ryan Reynolds get on screen and say the blood-drinking, shapeshifting, decidedly *not* a fishman was worshipped under the name Dagon in the ancient past.

I loved the shoutout for the show "Kingdom!" It's the first show I watched set in the Joseon era (which is "Medieval Korea," but much like "Feudal Japan," it actually lasted up through the 19th century). Since then, my wife has gotten *deep* into Korean culture and television, so I've watched a whole lot more stuff in that setting. Just like Chad, I absolutely loved the costuming -- and especially the hats! Man, what great hats! The zombies were cool too, I guess.

Great show. Funny, the vampire thing was never my thing. Between Count Chocula and all the emoness of 90’s/20’s vampires it just didn’t catch. But I would love to know your thoughts about Discworld vampires.

Robert Taylor

I’m spent the whole episode waiting for Chad and Chris to talk about (spoilers?) Midnight Mass. Great episode, so I’m only vaguely disappointed.

I think the problem with Venom is that outside of the Spider-Man universe, it doesn’t make sense. There was a lot of build up to Venom in the comics, something that the movies just can’t duplicate. As for Eddie Brock being redeemable, if I remember correctly, he was revenge driven against Spider-Man, but not inherently evil. I don’t remember much about Morbius, except that I doubt he deserves a feature length movie. I’ll file that under vampire movies I don’t want to watch.

I love the idea of a What We Do in the Shadows episode where it’s 30 Days of Night meets the Fyre Festival. They could call it Galavamp.

Lord Rancid

Vampire City ordered from Amazon ;)

I'll drop a recommendation for Merhige's 2000 Shadow of the Vampire, a phenomenal vampire movie about the making of another phenomenal vampire movie (Nosferatu). Stylish, creepy, meta, witty, grim, and underappreciated.

Kingdom is so much fun. Love that show. Season 2 has an incredible panning large-scale fight in the courtyard and I was astounded with joy. Second Midnight Mass. That would be great as a March is for Draculas, or bonus content.

Speaking of vampire movies, the podcast The Evolution of Horror is about to start a vampire series. They take a horror movie sub-genre and examine it movie by movie chronologically. I am in the midst of the zombie series now myself, where both I Am Legend and The Kingdom have come up, in a nice bit of synchronicity.

I dont recall you guys ever covering The Vampyre. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that there have been sooooo many shows. The Vampyre is by John William Polidori (1819) It is probably the first complete vampire story published in the UK, John William Polidori was the personal physician of Byron in 1816.

The only Dracula sequels I countenance are Fred Saberhagen’s series where Drac explains how everything was a big cultural misunderstanding.

Matt Baldwin

Nicolas Cage is playing Dracula in a new movie called Renfield. I hope you guys decide to discuss that down the track.

Chad, describing an unusual piece of 19th century vampire parody that predates Dracula: “It's almost like the Neanderthal cousin of the vampire” Chris, in anticipation of such a rare dish: “Mmm...”. You made me think of the Epicurean Club in the story Sunbird by Neil Gaiman - they've already eaten all the things they can think of, what's next on the menu?

Jeremy Impson

I have exceedingly fond memories of watching Nick Knight / Forever Knight as a young teenager on a 13 inch tube television in the spare room in my family home, drinking bottles of Jamaican ginger beer. I remember there being some amazing noir-esque monologuing by the recurring antagonist (named LaCroix?) who was a talk radio host. This let him be a part of every episode since Nick could play the show on any nearby radio, even if his character wasn't relevant to the plot. I also remember watching Cop Rock in that same room, so...

I’d be really interested in you guys talking about vampire the masquerade in a bonus episode, I think it’s been so influential on modern vampire stories and the evolution of the game from lighting in the bottle new form of role playing game, to its obsession with a millennial apocalypse to its newest form is all interesting stuff.

Steve

I don't remember you having done Colin Wilson's The Space Vampires (filmed as Lifeforce). It's a return to the Mythos in some ways.

Steve

True Blood lasted 80 episodes but I guess the main character wasn't a vamp. Apparently it's going to be rebooted.

The revenants in Kingdom aren't vampires or zombies. They're gangsi, which is the Korean equivalent of the Chinese Jiāng-Shī which Chris and Chad have encountered before in Pu Songling's Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio with the story "Spitting Water" (Ep 398). Gangsi/Jiāng-Shī are corpses that come back to life after being infused with negative yin energy. This is why they are only active at night in Kingdom. They can be commanded and controlled by special Daoist priests known as "corpse walkers" or "corpse wranglers." If you want to know more (albeit from a Chinese perspective) I recommend imperial librarian Ji Yun’s essay “On the Jiāng-Shī and other Returns” (1789) an English translation of which can be found in Yi Izzy Yu and John Yu Branscum’s The Shadow Book of Ji Yun (2021): 3-9. Belief in the reality of the Jiāng-Shī has not disappeared from modern China either as revealed by journalist Liao Yiwu’s book The Corpse Walker: Real Life Stories, China from the Bottom Up (2008): 3-12 & 28-39.

Dracula's Daughter (the first Universal Dracula sequel) kind of does what you were talking about for your sequel, Chad. It's about a woman who'd been turned into a vampire by Dracula, who seeks a cure for her condition now that he's dead. Granted, the whole thing's really just a big metaphor for lesbianism. But it picks up literally seconds after the end of the first film, with Dracula dead, and it has no interest whatsoever in bringing him back.

One movie I don't think has been mentioned is 2010's "Daybreakers" with Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe. It could be interpreted as a sequel to "I Am Legend", envisioning what would happen if the vampires took over the world. The vampires try to lead a normal modern life, while facing the problem that they're running out of blood and they can't go out in the sun.

Innsmouth Gold

Did anyone mention Shadow of the Vampire, great movie about the making of Nosferatu. And I just read today that Defoe is playing the lead in a new version of Nosferatu, though not sure how accurate that is. You mentioned Dacre Stoker - we had writer Chris McAuley on the Innsmouth Book Club recently. He was telling us about a new project he is launching along with DS called the Stokerverse. It involves comics, RPGS, maybe even film https://www.patreon.com/posts/ep38-chris-63626749
