Every time my husband and I watch this episode of TTZ, he busts out laughing when Charlie says, ‘How was I supposed to know he wasn’t a monster or something?’ It’s now our standard backpeddle statement for every random screw up.

Matthew Henry

Is the musical track at the end available somewhere?

Dave Parfitt

So happy to hear the first episode of SSoSS, congrats!

Lane Mullin

Love the new logo. I’ve taught this story so many times. It’s like listening to an old song.

Fred Kiesche

Logo isn't showing up in Overcast, alas. Hopefully the server will update the feed at some point.

Jason Ginman

You are now The Artist Formerly Known As HP Podcraft!

Andrew Brown

Great stuff. I didn’t know how much of a bad ass Serling was. Paratroopers are folks who were and are on the sharp end. It doesn’t mean morally better but does mean they are bad ass. BTW: In todays world replace zealot with activist and there you go.

Steve

I was going to post a comment, but I don't want to be creating free content, for the likes of you.

Philip Cowan

Strong opening for the new show guys, congrats. Glad you slipped in the two-headed aliens ending from the short story; my prep for today’s lesson was restricted to the TV episode. Only problem is, I am now imagining a Chris head and a Chad head both on the one body using the show to slowly take over the world. See, it’s happening…you can’t disprove it can you! Must be true. Run, kill, run, kill, run, kill…

Louis Hobbs

How nice that the first voice we hear after the intro belongs to Andrew.

Robert Curtin

My favorite TZ episode, and what a great start to the new show! So very excited!

Jeremy Saz

Awesome start to a new chapter! Congratulations and thank you for the years of insight, humor, and great fiction.

Ben Gilbert

Great show. If you ever need a break from heavier fare, try Erich Frank Russell’s ‘Allamagoosa’ which won the 1955 Hugo for Best Short Story. It’s based on a Navy tall tale called ‘The Shovewood’.

Sweatin' to the Great Oldies

Sometimes I see the current week title and think, "That seems familiar..." Then I hear two sentences from the reader and it all floods back. Thank you, gents! The show is dead. Long live the show!

Your introduction about Schklovsky’s use of “alienation” as a key aspect of the show going forward made me think of Bertolt Brecht’s Verfremdungseffekt (alienation or estrangement effect). The Verfremdungseffekt is used in theater to create a sense of artificiality in order to have the audience experience a play from a purely intellectual standpoint. It seems obvious that Brecht was influenced by Schklovsky’s concept, but, apparently, there is some evidence to suggest that a protégé of Schklovsky’s personally told him about it. Until listening to this episode, I was only aware of such a technique as part of theater. Ahaha, this was a bit of a digression, but I always leap at the opportunity to talk about Brecht.

Richard Wolfe

Just wanted to say congratulations on the launch of the new show, or iteration thereof! It was a great episode and I’m off to watch the original Twilight Zone episode now.

Steve

That is a great story that I'd not heard before and which deserves to be more widely known. Thanks for sharing it and all power to SSoSS.

William Tank

Hey guys thanks for another great show. Just wanted to say that many of Rod Serling's papers are at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison. Thanks again.

The Spider Incident

Good episode! I went and watched the Twighlight Zone episode before listening, since the classics are only like 20 minutes long. This is one of those short stories that I think should be read in school. Lots of good discussion points to be had for many different age groups.

Jeremy Impson

I live and grew up in and around Binghamton, NY That's it, there's no further comment or joke. Rod Sterling growing up here is about the most notable thing we've produced.

Jeremy Impson

Hey I don't remember signing up to this Patreon, but I'll stick around because I like what I've heard so far. Speaking of which, you two sound very familiar.

Jeremy Impson

I flashed back to highschool from the "who looks up at the sky at night" and "be careful who you're talking to" comments.

Alan Ricks

I find your lack of Lyin’ Vincent Price disturbing.

ESTY

I am profoundly relieved the the scream after "HP Podcraft dot com" has been carried over to SSoSS ~phewf!~

Illegal_Structures

“Soon they will make a board with a nail so big, it will destroy them all!”

Daniel Hernández

Great new begining guys!!, i must say that that job testing eject seats is almost as dangerous as that first guy testing condoms not made of sheep! amazing stuff

Ravewolf

This story scared me as a kid, partly because the monsters did turn out to exist, they just had our number and didn't need to attack so directly is all. I can't help but think of deliberately sown discord by various interest groups, from social media companies, sure, but also foreign adversaries who are known to train troll posters to argue both sides of an issue on forums just to keep people arguing and divided. It really does work - divide and conquer.

Michele Stuart

Great relaunch! Enjoyed the story, but also your introduction and explanation of what the show will be from now on. Looking forward to more years of great stories. Also, damn, Rod Serling was hard core. I'd barely finished exclaiming over the fact that he served in the Pacific in WWII, when you started talking about testing parachutes! Astonishing.

Bob Theaker

Loving the new concept and 1st episode. Great job, guys!

Melissa Verble

Great show! Anytime Sterling is involved I know it will be good stuff. Congrats on your new journey.

Benjamin Adler

Love the episode but waiting for itvto drop on regular podcast feeds (is it different from HPPodcraft?)

Jim Cannon

Speaking of stuff you've learned over the last 13 years that was a banger of an intro and mission statement for the (new) show. Blows the first one out of the water. Y'all sound so grown up and professional now.

Doc Singles

What a fantastic inaugural show and excellent choice in Rod Serling. I recently found this quote and wanted to share it: "Violence does not spring from a vacuum. It's born out of other men's violence. It gets nurtured and it grows in a soil of prejudice and of hate and of bigotry." ~Rod Serling

I love Serling and the Twilight Zone, but this one always felt a little heavy-handed to me. Upon reflection that's probably because we covered this story in three different English classes in grade school. Having to read it aloud as a group in class multiple times might have gotten me a little jaded (We GET IT, the red scare was BAD. What are you going to blow my mind with next, The Crucible wasn't really about witches?). Revisiting it many years later with your commentary and with the current political/social climate has me thinking maybe this story is actually under-taught. Speaking of Serling, anyone who'd like more (completely factual) biography of him should check out his episode of the Dead Authors Podcast. There's also an episode with Tennesee Williams, but The Vengeance of Nitocris doesn't come up. https://thedeadauthorspodcast.libsyn.com/chapter-33-rod-serling-featuring-john-ross-bowie

Loved this - what a great story for our time to kick the new show off with. It's with a note of sadness, however, that I have to report that this same week my much-loved H P Podcraft t-shirt has finally given up the ghost. After wearing it countless times over the last 3 years, my wife held it up, waggled her fingers through the multiple under-arm holes, cocked her head and gave me THAT look. I've regretfully put it to rest, but I like to think of it as good karma - an old(ish) thing making way for something new. Onwards and upwards with the evolution cos I know you guys will never let us forget how you got here. Respect :)

Haylen Brenagh

Positive interactions, guys! I'm totally digging the new content.

Rory Campbell

I love this episode of the twilight zone. When paranoia takes over and friends become enemies.

Eldritch Scerry

Episode 135. Part 2 of The Willows. Airdate Nov 15, 2012. Commentary includes reference to Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. And how adults are more likely to believe outrageous claims than children. Ten years later…

Z.A. Kahan

Great pick to start off. For similar ideas on scares real and imagined, I recommend “The Death of Grass” by Sam Youd.

Eduardo Garcia

Hi guys! Long time listener, since the Horror at Martin's Beach, first time poster. Tanks for all your work, glad that you guys are sticking around!

Joe Webb

Great episode. Um, Episode the First I mean. Aside from being a personal favorite, this episode was required viewing in my daughters high school civics class. Speaking of my daughter, we are moving out of our house of 13 years, and listened to this episode of the new show while painting the new house. I would play your show when I would drive her to gymnastics and ballet class (LA traffic meant we usually heard an entire episode by the time we got home). After she left for college she would listen to the show on weekends. Know that your show was, and will continue to be, the soundtrack for an important part of our lives. Thank you both so much.

Robert D.

Congratulations on the new show! Just have to ask: Robert Aickman used the phrase “strange stories” to describe his writings, apparently. Is that a coincidence? 🤔

Victoria Goodwin

I got into Lovecraft during the pandemic thanks to finding Andrew Leman on yt (The Whisperer, the Haunter, etc), bought all the Lovecraft collections on Audible, and now I'm here lol. Thank you guys for doing all. I'm looking forward to looking through it all!
