Cylinder shapes? Paging Dr. Freud.

"Hola" is a common salutation in the Golden Age Wonder Woman comics, and Grant Morrison has tried to bring it back whenever they write Wondy. It would be neat if Moulton-Marston was inspired by this story, a clear Amazon parable.

Another entry in the Ladyland canon is James Tiptree Jr.'s (AKA Alice Sheldon) 'Houston, Houston, Do you Read?' An interesting story, I couldn't tell whether it was deliberately trying to deconstruct utopian depictions of a female ruled world... or whether that was just me unable to see past the end of my Y chromosome. I'd love to see Strange Studies re-visit Tiptree sometime in the future.

I was relieved to find out I'm not the only one who thought Dr. Zira was hot.

Gola is presumably named after the famous sporting goods company. I wore Gola Harrier trainers to play football in the early 70s, but it was founded in 1905.

I've been kind of obsessed with the podcast Midnight Burger recently, so naturally the discussion at the end of this episode made me think of episode 13 of that show, where one of the characters is contemplating hooking up with an alien she's just met at a space bar, and one of the other characters is explaining how this works: LEIF ... Look, the important thing is that there’s two people at the bar and they’re into each other. What follows is a frank conversation with your chosen partner for the evening, and then a fun trip to that vending machine over there. GLORIA What happens at the vending machine?! LEIF It’s like going to Europe. You just need the right adapter. AVA Don't get the wrong adapter. You could fry your curling iron, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. GLORIA Okay, I think I’m out. The same scene includes two other characters demonstrating why the Bible is okay with people having sex with aliens. I guess my point is, everybody should listen to Midnight Burger.

Glad to hear my name called out as a supporter of the show. Been listening since 2012 and started supporting you all as soon as I heard you all asking for 6.66. I always look forward to hearing about whichever story that is covered for the week. Keep it up the amazing work.

Its nice to hear Lisa Yaszeck’s name on here and that you are pulling from some of her work. She is super friendly and approachable on social media if you are thinking of a possible guest or any bonus content. I first came across her wonderful interviews on Dickheads: the Philip K Dick Podcast and The Hugos There Podcast and every one of her appearances deserves a listen. The setup of these humans treated as pets by strange superior aliens put in the mindset of the trippy 1973 French sci fi animated film Fantastic Planet, which is streaming and if anyone here has skipped it, do yourself a favour and look it up.

I really liked this story. But early on I hadn't quite grasped that it was a reflection of our solar system until I read the description of the Detaxalans and had a "Wait a minute....." moment and re-read it. An "Ah ha!" moment then followed. Also, for the description of the overthrow and the Golan male reaction, I believe the term is "coup d'ecat". I'll see myself out.....

It's a Ghost.

Fun fact: the actual mean surface temperature on Venus is 867°F. Also from NASA.gov: “The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide – the same gas driving the greenhouse effect on Venus and Earth – with clouds composed of sulfuric acid. And at the surface, the hot, high-pressure carbon dioxide behaves in a corrosive fashion.”

How can the humans tell the Golans, who are cylindrical blobs, are female? Do they wear mascara? Do they have high pitched voices? 🤔

Jason Thompson

I do love the image of some square-jawed handsome Earthman cuddling up to a furry pseudo-Shoggoth. Reverse of the usual “monster guy / human girl” trope 🔥

Jason Thompson

Last comment I swear: maybe the word “exploit” didn’t originally have such negative connotations? There’s a whole thing called the “explore or exploit question” that my wife told me about: in early life you want to “explore” new things, and as you get older you tend to prefer to “exploit” things and activities that are familiar and successful for you. Probably some people are wanting to rename it 😂

These aliens remind me of the Dralasites from the awesome TSR RPG Star Frontiers with their protoplasmic bodies, minus the golden fur though.

Richard Horsman

I love that this went down the route of repulsing the invaders (to death). At first I was expecting some variant of “oh we’re not so different after all” but it went for gleeful violence instead.

Female shoggoths -- or, if you will, SHEggoths.

I've taught a couple of iterations of an "Amazons in Pop Culture course," and the Ladyland tropes going all the way back to the ancient Athenians usually involve an all-female society that goes around conquering their neighbors or otherwise being unpleasant until "real" men show up, seduce a few leading Amazons, and defeat the rest, possibly commemorating the occasion in public sculpture (like on the Parthenon). Glad to see that's not how *this* story goes. In related news, Googling anything about Amazons is much harder now thanks to Jeff Bezos. Oh, one more thing: The latest season of Picard's massive heaps of fanservice should have had middle-aged Riker in the "Angel One" outfit, if they weren't cowards.
