In this explosive episode of Strange Studies, old rivalries and new rivalries go to war with each other!

Mandy Reznor (She/It)

Not even five minutes in and I now want to raise Clark Ashton Smith from his essential saltes and force him—under threat of torture, of course—to DM a game of AD&D 2E where me and my friends are over-confident thieves trying to foolishly pull a heist in Cavitus. Y'know, where the actual literal demigod Vecna is trapped in the Demiplane of Dread—the 2E Vecna who always has first turn in a round no matter what and can blast out two Wish spells every single time if He wants. It feels like the kind of scenario CAS would torment his players with.

I’m so excited for The Island of Dr Moreau! Never read it and this’ll finally get me to.

CarcharodonMegs

The conflict/drama conversation reminded me of one of my favorite old episodes (134) you all did over Algernon Blackwood's The Willows. The conflict on the differing opinions on that story was fire

Chad. I have bought and will buy every piece of music you put out. I may be obsessed, off the hook, or maybe possessed, but whatever it is it's a damn funky ghost!

I like Ethan came away with feeling it was a very poor analogy for civil rights but I came away with a totally different view of mental illness. I didn't think it was about accepting the werewolf or vampire, but at how dangerous crazy can be - the young boy and the reverend. It wasn't systematic, no one else in the story seemed to even notice the monsters. It was only the "crazy" people who were dangerous. I don't know if that was the intention but that's what it felt like...

Jason Thompson

Well, if you bathe once a week, at least it’s good for the planet. 🤷‍♀️

Gilgamesh, yes please! I ended up reading Vampire City last year myself, prompted by this podcast but long ago suggested to me by friends, and I'm glad I did. If anything, Chad undersells how utterly gonzo and ridiculous it is. Feval wasn't trying to scare anyone, its intentionally funny, but I do think Merry Bones is the coolest Irish superhero since Cuchulainn.

Adequately Excellent Entertainment

I hear “The Gurgling Eunuchs” is opening the Gobi Stage at Coachella. I can’t wait to hear their hit single “Feeeeed Baack Loooooooop!” Live

Eric - Speaker in Digressions

+1 for Gilgamesh! What's stranger than someone who is 2/3 god, 1/3 man? Plus: famously contains a flood story that parallels Noah's. In other news, I'm afraid I couldn't quite get into the Herzog Nosferatu. I speak as someone who had a cat named Count Orlok (to bring the pet names discussion back) and generally admire Herzog's work. It's just so very, very slooooow. I've tried twice. Now, Shadow of the Vampire: That's entertainment.

Chad's Revelations in Black is The King in Yellow turned up to 11. The story contains a fictional play that nevertheless fascinates real people. RiB is a fictional song that real people are somehow singing. Madness!

It's a Ghost.

Despite being someone who grew up in the 80s, it's this podcast that introduced me to both Manimal and Zamfir, and I can't thank you enough, I think 😉

Recently I have fallen out of Podcast listening for nearly every other podcast cast except this one and I think the difference between this show and the rest is that Chad is an accomplished song writer and has been able to add that extra push to the overall production value on top of being our Foil to our oftentime straight man, Chris. All this to say you both bring some much to the table and have introduced us to so many other (albeit dead) authors and (for now still alive musicians) that it really covers all my bases for podcast listening and most other entertainment purposes as well.

I'll throw my hat into the ring for what we should call us patrons. While I do like Strangers(it reminds me of the Venture Bros Guild Strangers), I recall hearing you guys call us stakers a few episodes back. That got me thinking of the most logical continuation of that name. We should be called Stokers. Think about it. Whenever a new episode comes out, I'm stoked. My fellow commenters are stoked to engage in discussion on these episodes. You guys are stoked to read them. I say we finish what good old Bram Stoker started way back in the day, and bring stoking back in a big way. Stokers!

Its Mr Bat Man To You

I hate to be wishy washy, but I love Stakers, Stokers, Strangers, and even Stranglers! All seem so appropriate

Alan Ricks

I think people surprised that other people are only able to bath once a week aren’t parents with fulltime jobs.

Karl Haikara

You guys need to watch Herzogs Nosferatu, you can watch it in English and German, it's one of my all time favorites

Ryan Thomas

Oh, it's FeedBACK, not feedBAG. I had it all wrong in my head.

MR ZEEL

Not really enjoying the unresearched comments about British washing habits fellas. A simple Google search about the history of bathrooms might have informed you. I still love you guys though . Xx z.

Science Doctor, PhD

Thanks for the shout out in the feedback episode! I had completely forgotten that I had posted that comment, which may help to illustrate my mind as I work full time as a teacher (higher ed, nursing) while going to school full time for my PhD (nursing), which I don't recommend anybody do if they can avoid it. Thankfully in a better place this week, finishing out the last work of the Spring term (for both my teaching job and 'studenting' job), which will give me more free time to do things that aren't those things, like reading, and snacks! I thought about bringing home too more books after hearing Chris mention his need to hold off until he has time to read more of them. Definitely also in this boat. Maybe we can call ourselves a little off the... Book? (Remember I'm a teacher AND a nurse, so any criticism of this book needs to be followed up with unhelpful banging of pots and pans lest you fail in your annual hero-worship rituals) :) Been listening since almost your start, you always provide quality entertainment, education, and (these days) distraction.

James Duffy

Chris mentioning cutting down buying books definitely rings true for me as well. I turn 40 this July and recently sat down and did a rough calculation of all the remaining film, TV, books, podcasts, videogames, boardgames, and roleplay games that I have in my home to still consume, and realised that I am most certainly dead before I get to it all. Unless I quit my job, ditch my 3 children, and invent some life extension tech fast!

Nicholas Sturch-Flint

I don't know where the best place to comment suggestions is, so I'll do it here: You should cover some Peter Straub, he's a recent discovery for me, but he's an absolute titan in the horror genre, and his short stories are insane! I would love to get your thoughts about anything from Houses Without Doors, Mrs God might take up a whole month but it so perfectly fits with the show, it would be awesome to see you guys cover him!
