"Houston, We Have Three Problems!"vs."Tokyo Has Had Better Tuesdays"
It's like they always say: learn the rules, so you can break them. If "Houston, We Have Three Problems!" wins, I'll delve deep into my knowledge of orbital mechanics, only to ignore them the moment Heather and the girls get blasted into space. In each chapter? A brand-new catastrophe (easily solvable by pressing a big flashing button, or saying, "Wait... I've got an idea... If we inverted the tachyon thrusters, and rerouted the auxiliary...," Geordi La Forge-style. Somewhere around Chapter 14, there might be a spacewalk that succeeds by using nothing but duct tape. NOTHING. BUT. DUCT TAPE. Because America. You know what else is America? Big jiggly bits in zero-G. Andy Weir will have a stomach ache simply by the virtue of this book existing.
Which leads us across the world, with "Tokyo Has Had Better Tuesdays." This book will wastes absolutely no time pretending to have a plot. The first 15 pages are basically just the city being introduced so you have a rough idea of what's about to be flattened by terror from the deep. Enter: three impossibly glamorous giant robot heroines -- humanities last hope! -- who shoot all sorts of weapons out of their eyes, hands, and yes... their giant cannons.
The scientists are thrilled! Every time another neighborhood disappears, somebody in a lab coat pumps a fist and yells, "Remarkable!" They don't care that Tokyo is being destroyed again! This is the first time they get to take their very inappropriate robot kaijus for a test drive!
