Hi! Just joined your Patreon for the first time (I’ve wanted to for a while but then I saw you were starting boys planet and absolutely had to) I added this comment on K planet episode 1 but then just saw that this C episode was posted recently and thought it might be more relevant here! But, I wanted to offer some input/context about this whole K vs C concept. So from my understanding, originally, it wasn’t supposed to be like Korean and Chinese trainees separated necessarily but rather just forming two separate groups. 1 that debuts in Korea and focuses on the domestic market and one that debuts in China and focuses on the Chinese market. Technically you can be of any nationality and choose to join either the K or C planet depending on what kind of group you want to be in but of course the majority of C group happens to be Chinese contestants and the Korean group has trainees of other nationalities. I’m actually not sure there are any Chinese contestants currently on K planet (most of the Chinese sounding names you hear are actually Taiwanese contestants there) but I don’t think there was like an official rule stating that Chinese contestants couldn’t be on K planet as well. Initially, there was never this K like versus C concept. They were supposed to be 2 completely separate shows basically that would have similar/same structure and that would air at the same time. And then the boys would be under the same company and debut at the same time but they weren’t going to interact necessarily throughout the survival show from my understanding (someone correct me if I’m wrong though). I don’t think they ever released the official reason as to why, but Mnet ended up scrapping this idea. It could have been from internal company conflict, or the backlash the they received from structuring the show this way (because a lot of people had qualms about the concept and felt it was a way to keep Chinese contestant from debuting in a kpop group since ZhangHao placed first last season and there is a lot of discourse about how Ricky is treated by wakeone) but ultimately I think this is up for speculation. Because they decided to scrap the original concept AFTER casting, they had to restructure the show which is why it is starting as separately K and C, but only for the 1st two weeks and then will merge into one group. That’s why the K trainees were shocked to learn about the planet and merging thing because it wasn’t presented that way when casting for the show and there’s a lot of discourse about how much the trainees actually know about the process and how much Mnet is choosing not to tell them (like the fact that they are now competing against double the amount of people than they thought for only 8 spots). Though I have this inclining that they will surprise increase the debut number to 9 at the very least. We don’t know yet what the rest of the show will look like, but I don’t think there will be any sort of K battling C contestants, or at least not for very long. I think they will just merge and then complete missions together (though of course this is very unclear but I hope they wouldn’t risk any more backlash by making them compete against eachother).

The reason Mnet decided on this concept in the 1st place is because for about the past decade, China has had a ban (though technically unofficial) on kpop in China. Essentially, due to restrictions and rules, Kpop groups are not allowed to perform or promote in China and there’s even a ton of regulations involving just the distribution of kpop materials. They can’t even air kpop survival shows in China so technically Chinese fans need to use VPNs and such to watch. But, there has been rumors from China that the ban is lifting this year. Which HUGE because it’s existed since the beginning of 4th gen. The Chinese market is HUGE (obviously if you just consider their population) and kpop, despite it being banned, is EXTREMELY popular there. It is an extremely lucrative market and there’s a reason so many Chinese idols choose to return there or spend a big portion of their time promoting there because they’re able to become extremely successful and make much more money (Examples, Exo Lay, Jackson Wang, The8). It’s said that this Kpop ban in China has cost the Korean Economy more than $16 billion since it began in 2016. Lifting the ban means that kpop companies now have a huge opportunity to push into the Chinese market and make a ton more of money which is why Mnet jumped on the opportunity to take advantage of this situation. A huge thing to note is that because this ban is technically unofficial, it has never been acknowledged by the Chinese government, meaning the lifting of the ban hasn’t been either. This ban is only happening because there’s essentially this large agreement and just regulations in place to not allow Kpop groups to do things such as hold concerts there or not allowing broadcast channels to broadcast kpop shows etc…. The reason there is a big belief that the ban is being lifted is because recently, more groups are starting to be allowed to perform in China and it seems like there is less restrictions and distribution etc… But again, there is no way to be sure the ban is lifting or when exactly it is so maybe that’s another reason Mnet dropped the original idea (like maybe they decided it was too risky) but who knows. Anyways…. Sorry for the crazy messages but I just wanted to provide context cause I think it’s just really interesting to hear about

After this happened the group quietly disbanded. 5 of the other Members redebuted under a different name later.

xiaoting is in kepler !

I think the way the show is structured seems odd to you because of the last minute decision to merge into one group. this completely separate structure for episodes one & two would have made sense if they stuck to doing two different groups and maybe they would have just thrown a cute episode in there for the trainees to all meet each other as as "brother groups" * Thank you! As soon as I saw I saw Sun Jia Yang I said Gyuvin's parents need to do a DNA test they have a lost Chinese child. Lmao if you wanted us to cook you you might as well do this live 🤣. Listen to me carefully we will NAWT be using Asian standards of beauty in this house. Kim Jae Joong's renaissance into public activities again has been really awesome to see (Also fuck SM). It was just so unfair for him and the other members who sued to be blacklisted but that sacrifice has honestly made things so much better for idols today then it was in second gen, and let's be clear it's nowhere near perfect today but it could have been even worse.

johnnyxtsunami

Starting here Yeah I think it would seem odd to any new viewer that did know the original concept of two separate groups and two separate shows like mssmercedes said, so yeah it’s kinda weird but at least they get a bit more option/screen time, I still stand by that they made the right choice merging, after seeing how many groups get neglected as a whole in the c market all these years Sun jia yang was on another survival show that happened not too long ago called starlight boys and my exact same thought was he looked like gyuvin back then lol Like the last ep the stickers were just to rank each other, and they can do like little battles to switch seats, they were doing like staring contests and seeing who’s back down first etc Alita battle angel or however you spell that lol I remember that movie Yeah Krystian in the last season was made to look mean, he fought over the center for the group with kamden, can jin xin the bowl cut one was on the team with woongki for twice song, xuan hao i remember was at the cut off for the first elimination

chelsey

i think the only person that caught my attention was probably green shirt/new yorker on TAP team. i can understand why they gave jack 3 stars, the idol personality is hard to *teach* and he's already got it for sure - along with performing well enough. i liked fever team too.

y'all really showing up with these likes THANK GOD! Sun Jia Young was aight but... 3? Nian was a standout for sure.

makes sense I forgot abt this lowkey

i’m typing as i’m watching so this comment might be long — sorry in advance lol. ( i actually might just make multiple comments. ) ⭐️ - i really wish they had more chinese mentors? like it would make sense for the trainees who do not know korean who are still learning to have someone other than xiaoting speaking to them in a language they all can understand? it’s just very distasteful. - i agree with you about the fact that it would’ve been cool to instead of having the kpop experienced it was cpop experienced. i see why they didn’t do that but it would’ve been nice. - zhong xing the sexy dude had me cackling the entire episode. i thought i would’ve been put off by his whole sexy agenda but it was just really funny to me. 😭 especially him getting the other trainees involved.

nai

i hate the fact that they said lay “ex exo member”??? he’s literally still in exo. the members have clarified it SO MANY TIMES and so has he. he was literally with kai recently filming dance challenges. don’t piss me off mnet fr. 😭

nai

- the boy story pump it up team did not gag me at all. sun jia was cute and all but i think two’s would’ve made more sense all around. - i’m rolling heavy with the taekwondo/ningbo team. i don’t know smth about them really grabbed my attention. i loved the routine, i think the vocals/rap could’ve been better but i know also that chinese rap is different from what i’m used to hearing so i just don’t have the ears to speak on it really. i’d say two’s all around again. - naughty boy was made by pentagon! the way i got so hyped when i heard it. it brung me backkkkk. 😞☝️

nai

my favorites. - honestly i loved nian and lim jack !! by far are my two favorite out of all these trainees here. 😭 so much potential and they already have great talent especially with jack training for such a short amount of time. the personality is also there ! love them sm. i think they deserved their all stars. jia hao and an xin reminded me of proper well crafted idols. i liked them a lot and think they are insanely talented. jia hao also reminds me sm of wonbin for some reason. i liked sen too from the crown team. i think once he’s trained properly he could be a gem. i’ll keep my eye out for him.

johnnyxtsunami

Bro I said the same thing when boy story came out I was like damn I gotta go look at there latest music, they’re grown grown now damn

Alyson

The ex-K-pop idol in the blue shirt really impressed me. He was the first one who stood out to me. I also liked Nian, I thought his performance was really solid!! I can see why he got an all-star, but I didn't agree w/ giving Jack an all-star either. In my opinion, he should have gotten a 1-star, but could have gotten away with a 2-star. The Fever unit was also pretty good! The problem is, with the K side, some performances made me really excited to root for the contestant. I am not feeling that with really any of the C-side contestants except for the Blue shirt K-pop idol. I'm excited to see Boy Story and what they got. I actually had a thought about Boy Story. I'm not sure if it's true, but I'm wondering if people lost interest in the group because they were getting older. I remember when they debuted, and I think they were relatively popular. But JYP also has a habit of debuting new groups, promoting them really well, and then ignoring them when they get a couple of years under their belt. And just repeat that cycle.

Rose

I really don't get how they make 1 show where 1 group should come from, yet have different methods during evaluation between the K and C groups. they should have just copy and pasted everything they did with K. it makes it a lot fairer. the fact that with a retest the other members do not have to risk their stars is kind of crazy to me. and also how they said you can only retest if you are a zero star

a2r

I agree!

johnnyxtsunami

I blame the fact that they tried being “innovative” and I use that loosely, with doing originally two separate shows with separate groups, but I agree with the whole restest thing like they could’ve just kept the formula of season 1

johnnyxtsunami

Yeah I can see that for sure, I think part of it also has to do with half the members being on hiatus with either school or health reasons and their Chinese part of the company not promoting them because of that

johnnyxtsunami

True even though they said that this c side would originally be a c-pop group they sure focused a lot on kpop but also I understand that it’s mnet and they would also be doing kpop, I just assumed they didn’t have enough cpop idols like boy story so they through in kpop trainees/company trainees/kpop survival show trainees as experienced Yichen from wakeone was also in the survival show project 7 that made close your eyes, anxin and jiahao were in makemate1 another survival show in korea they are in nouer and in china they are also under lays company, ncc although partially owned by jyp i would say the Chinese side/ tencent the parent company has more of a say in them Lmao when you said delicious I had YG treasure box flashbacks lol Lmao i was like ant is def going to skip over the new mentors lol Sun jia yangs group was good but like they said, nothing amazing, they were stable for the most part Bro I said the same thing, like damn no star and not even a mention, like for real erased lol The taekwondo teams performance was hype but they didn’t have much too then other than that I’m gonna be biased blonde hair binghua is way better than this, it’s unfortunate that he was sick for this and couldn’t show himself, losing his voice and everything, he was on project 7 too and was really good, they cut it and he got one star

johnnyxtsunami

You missed that the stars were self put on / voted by impressions from the beginning of the episode, not that they were only signed lol, the one that did big bang was an amateur from wherever I though Jack did decent but nian was better, I’d give him a 2 star but 3 for the comedic charm with out that they 2

a2r

Nah I caught that / remember that they voted based on first impressions, I guess through this 2 hr I might have went back to the train of thought on the k-side of the experienced/signed too, that's possible lol.

mssmercedes

Not me coming back several days later to finish my thoughts: The sexy guy catchphrase is cringy but harmlessly so. Just let him do his thing and at the end of the day I don't care unless his skills are good. Right now he's aight, nothing special but enough to pass the audition. It feels like you're slightly tougher on this episode in terms of ranking but I guess I can happen since they're going second. I was actually slightly more impressed overall with the C group this episode. The whole Shanghai team, Heng Yu, Nian Bo Heng, 2 Nouer guys etc were standouts but even their two-star people were a little bit more stable for me. Naughty Boy is by Pentagon Watching Jack make his little commentary is so funny to me because of you think about it the trainees are essentially sitting there doing exactly what we are doing reacting and making commentary That would make me so much more nervous if I think they're cooking me in the stands.

spideykook

that bo wen or bo yen? trainee that got an all star reminds me of park jihoon(wanna one, whc), the way he carries himself when he performs.

Heavenly

I know this is late but to give context to boystory, the members are still in school and wold take breaks to focus on finals and college entrance exams which the maknae of the group is currently doing right now. Also even though boy story is big in china, for the group being under jyp for this long

Heavenly

They absolutely sucked at promoting them, they have very little pull in the kpop scene even though the debuted around the same time as stray kids and even have content interacting with others groups under jyp aswell.
