It's time! our first painting of 2026 is misty mountains. This month we are focusing heavily on the wet into wet technique. No better way to get our feet "wet" than with mist! The first part goes quick so that we can keep our paper wet. Feel free to watch that through first before you start so you can catch the general idea. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, magenta, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. For today's painting I am just using sap green and indigo.

Brushes: round 10, 4 and rigger - Princeton brand.

I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO LEARN THESE!!! (This is what it looks like where I live, I basically live on the side of those mountains, it’s true, it never stops raining. Our paper never dries out. We basically live our whole life wet-in-wet.)

Monica Rose

I can't wait to try this one!

Karen

What a great start. Love it!

Lizzy Carol

So dreamy! For the masking tape… mine always peels my paper up. Tips to prevent extra sticky tape mishaps? Looking forward to warming up with the exercises from yesterday. I need to practice my value scales — especially with these darker colors.

Sandy Manning

Thanks Kristin great way to start 2026 yayyyy 🙌

Maura

I find this with regular masking tape too, but only when I am using 'other types of paper' not with the arches brand. If you are using arches and it is happening, then I'm not sure...maybe there is a painters tape or washi tape instead?

Danielle Heinlein

I’m super excited to join Patreon exactly for this 100 small paintings! So excited to do this later today!

Kat Berry

I have the opposite issue from Lindsay where my paper dries out super quick. Lots of hard lines and harder to get the misty blur. However, progress over perfection. :)

Sanne van der Veen

This is a perfect first painting of the year, can’t wait to start on it this weekend

Heather

Use your heating tool and it will come right up.

Heather

Kristin - I might have missed the answer somewhere but what book did you use to store last year’s paintings?? Ty!

marie whytsell

I only have a problem with masking tape when I leave it on too long or don't pull it off at an angle. I seldom ever have a problem with the tape for artists.

Melodee Skiles

Shouldn’t happen with higher quality paper, but heat and pulling at an angle will help. I use Holbein Soft tape, which is more expensive than masking tape but I LOVE it and it never tears my paper, even when I use cheap cellulose paper. :)

Heather

Thank you!!!

Nancy DeAngelo

Has painting number two been posted?

Laura Brey

Beautiful landscape ❤️‍🔥

I can’t sign up for 2026 tiny paintings

Marcy Clark

What a wonderful first painting! I had an absolute blast painting it and am looking forward to number 2! Is there a place to share our paintings?

Sandra

Kristin, I can’t thank you enough for sharing your talent and passion with all of us! This is fun!!!

Sandra

I’d like to share my painting, but at a loss as how to do it. Any suggestions?

Liz

Finished all 100 for 2025, and found this one to be challenging. I can never get the dark indigo and end up using black

Jeanette

I believe it is a Size 1 Rigger. In the last livestream in 2025 about "Sizing Up Your Paintings", she covered what brushes she used most for Tiny Paintings. I scribbled down Size 1 -and I'm pretty sure my notes are accurate.

Jeanette

You can attach a photo in Kristin's Chat under the tab titled "Chats" -but not here in comments for the video. Look forward to hopefully seeing your painting!

Jeanette

I'm rewatching the rest of January's livestream about water control then I'm going to paint this one hopefully tomorrow. An excellent painting for water control practice 🎨 TY for such an intentional and easy to follow curriculum Kristin! You make difficult looking paintings approachable.

Lindsay

Marcy, click Chats in the left side bar. You’ll see the group chat. That’s where people post their pics, questions, etc.

Lindsay

Go to “Chats” on the left. Click the group chat, you’ll see everybody posting their tinies.

Lindsay

Tuesdays and Fridays, Nancy. Today (Friday) was #1. So we expect #2 next Tuesday.

Lindsay

Did you try the “Membership” link at the top?

Elizabeth

I recently started using this and I also love it, first time my tape comes up easily.

Elizabeth

I’m really excited to try this and look forward to doing it on the weekend.

Casey KC

Hi, OMG what a fab. 1st tiny painting. I had toplay around with creating the colors a little bit (will buy the right ones next month) but this is it! The result n°1

helen lee

I love this...thank you loved painting it

Kris

Love all the tiny’s♥️

Diane M

Really enjoyed this…it’s definitely a skill I hope to improve. Great way to start 2026! I’m so happy to be doing this with you all❤️

Jeany Pfaff

I still struggle with keeping the paper wet enough to work. I did order Arches paper in the hopes that it will help. As usual, I finish a piece and think “yuck” but after I walk away and come back to it I think “ well I can tell what that’s supposed to be- so it’s a win”. Thanks Kristin for walking us through the process! Btw I bought the Daler Rowney set of paints and found it much easier to come closer to the colors in this tutorial.

ellen lekatz

Ok so I overwatered my first 2 forests. They dead. I shall try again. No you can’t see the bodies.

Jeanette

Good paper would definitely make this particular painting way easier to work with. This was a challenging one for me and I had a similar experience. Walk away, come back- and I kind of like it. I had good paper though, so I’m feeling for you. I may give it another go…

Lynn Bailey

I use Holbein soft tape, wonderful product and no tearing… so far ever…

Donna

My challenge was the rigger brush. It is taking a while to learn how to use it but this is a great follow up to your first lesson. I really enjoyed it!

Kay

Always helps to watch the video once or twice, speeding through some parts the second time. I had to work on keeping my paint a certain consistency, which is my personal challenge. What brand is your sap green? I noticed that the components of Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton Professional are different.

Leona Vilmont

Love this tiny painting - great instruction!

Shantel Rich

Do you paint in an area that is very dry - either from a heated house or a dry climate? If the Arches doesn’t fix it for you, you can try running a humidifier in your space if your space is super dry.

Mary Ann Williams

So excited to be here, and thrilled that I actually followed through after joining and did the replays of both the live class and the 1st tutorial! I'm curious if anyone knows when the final classes of each month will be (where we paint the reference photo that gets voted on). Is it on a set day of the month, or does it just depend on when Kristin schedules it? I work full time and am trying to block out time to join live classes when I can.

Jeany Pfaff

Normally pretty dry, although we've had a ton of rain in the past couple of weeks. Good thought on the humidifier!

Maike

Done! I really enjoyed it. I struggled a bit with the trees, but I love my first tiny painting. Thank you for the great instruction. Looking forward for the next ones. Greetings from snowy germany.

Roseanne Therese

This was so beautiful ! I also love using two colors and all the misty moodiness . Thanks Kristin ❤️❤️

Corinne Lee

Hot press or cold press paper?

Annalea Eastley

Sounds like you have a “before” reference point to see how you improve this year. Can’t wait to see how awesome you get!

Mikelle

lol I killed two forests last year when I saw paintings like this and tried copying without a tutorial. I'm letting my first layer dry now...hopefully the third time is a charm! :)

Mikelle

On my screen, it looks like the example has cold press texture.

Ali

I found it hard to get my trees to look like yours and the colours blended together more (instead of creating the lines in the trees). Not sure if I was using too much water or something. Loved this one though!

Corinne Lee

that's what I was thinking

DebH2Ogal

I am so excited for this format this year! I am looking forward to growth, fun and filling my tiny frames with my tiny paintings. I put my first painting up for 2026 =)

Laurie VanDerMeid

This one was really difficult for me ! I tried 3 times -

Brian Rogers

I’m just jumping in now about 1 week behind, I’ll catch up though! Love this project of a misty, moody valley just living on the side of a mountain (in my mind). I live near the Blue Ridge Mountains so this is perfect. Ours are bluish but that doesn’t matter. Looking forward to this year chugging along with y’all!

Yanzel

Starting a couple of days late but finally had time to enjoy the process. Loved this first painting!! I switched paper this year and what a difference it makes!

Gail Mills

Haven’t finished 2025 tiny paintings but started so late in the year. I’m looking forward to 2026 and trying to stay up, and I will fill in with 2025 also. Let’s do this!

Pam Cope

This was hard! My trees are very blobby. But I will persevere and am looking forward to seeing my progress.

Christin Slade

I'm just now joining in on this amazing challenge and I just want to say...I've watched and learned from a half dozen different watercolor artists and I absolutely love how detailed you are in explaining your process. I've never come across someone so good at articulating how you are doing what you're doing and how you end up with your finished piece as well as you. I'm really looking forward to learning a lot from you. Thank you so much for being in this space!

Patricia A Compton

I am having a terrible time catching up. How to get tiny paintings in order. Hard to find . Screen jumps around, closes down, very frustrating.(

Kendra

Is this letter and sparrow watercolors? That Sap green looks nothing like mine. I love it!

Martha Matthews

Just joined. Absolutely love this series.
