Painting 5 is all about clouds! Using wet into wet and negative painting we can utilize both soft and hard edges to create fluffy, shadowy clouds. The part that is the most important is keeping your edge wet when painting the blue sky. Work fast and bounce around to avoid the hard line from forming and don't introduce any water to the mix. Utilize lots of water, paper towel, and lifting to get that soft effect in the cloud shadows. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, magenta, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo, and Sap green.

Brushes: round 4 and 10 - Princeton brand.

Nice, I love clouds. Looks like another fun one.

Deb Nolan

No more trees and snow please!!

Kristin Van Leuven

Haha there might be a few more winter themed ones since we’re still in Jan, but we’re definitely moving on from snow clumps 😁

Jerri

I think this is really “tricking us” into painting snow on trees! 😁. Definitely parallels…..🙃

Jerri

I’m getting better at snow on trees. I’ve been practicing all the tress. Let’s try blue “horizontal branches” now….still watching video…twice now.😁

Susie

How do you make it look so easy? 🥰 I can’t seem to move my brush quick enough to get those nice cloud edges. Then I over work the sky. More practice needed.

Erin Berlin

I can not wait to do this one today!

Melinda

really loved the VERY limited palette today! Thank you!

Melinda

my favorite clouds have been the ones you made by lifting w/a tiny piece of paper towel :)

K-Ann

I found this to be a hard way to paint clouds… I’m going to need a lot of practice to figure out negative painting…. !

K-Ann

More white than blue??

K-Ann

Agreed. More cloud tips and tricks please

GK

I did it three times.. still need more practice doing it this way. I’m learning!!!

Deidre

How do you not feel defeated and frustrated when it’s not even close😔

Sandy Manning

Thanks so much Kristin still to be painted and looks very interesting. Thanks for the tips along the way which are helpful as well as lots of practice too

Gigi Hyland

Hmm, this will require a lot more practice! Mine looked like white blobs with gray bottoms. 😂

Jen P

I'm feeling the same with the clouds.

Amii Wroblewski

I have never watercolored before until January 1st when I started this 2026 painting challenge. I knew I would be in over my head when I dove right in but I’m staying the course. I had to practice the clouds for a few hours before I felt confident enough before attempting the painting. I’m not mad at it but wow, that was definitely difficult! I learned that I had to use my #4 round brush because I just didn’t have enough experience or control for the #10 in such a tiny square of paper and I think it turned out okay considering my lack of experience.

K-Ann

Don’t give up! I did all 100 paintings in 2025. This one- negative painting clouds was by far the hardest! I’ve done it 5 times… and don’t love any of them. A much easier way to do clouds is to dab a balled us tip of tissue paper into a blue wet sky. But I did like the instruction to place the largest clouds at the top and smallest at the bottom to create distance.

Argee

It is really hard to not feel that way but honestly, the only way I've finally seen improvement is consistent practice over time combined with a conscious effort to distance myself from perfection. It was so awful in my head last year that I quit the challenge mid-way and had a lot of self reflection about it. It was SUPER hard for me but I chose to pick my brushes back up and finish the challenge-but I did it!!! I hope that helps you-I'm so glad you had the courage to post this. (I didn't when I was going through it)

Kim Clarke

I definitely need more practice with negative painting, I just cannot make my brain see it! Maybe there’s something in this left-handed/negative painting theory!

memaw1963

It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who paints these paintings several times.

Cindy Wilson

Are you posting the reference photo?

Leslie Young

Did the reference photo ever get posted?

Kristine Callahan

I'm curious what brand of Indigo you use. Mine seems more Grey than yours. Thanks

Maura

Cindy, it has been there, you may have to scroll down to make it visible, but I could see it back on Saturday when I painted it. I am looking on my computer if that makes a difference, not my phone.

Maura

Leslie, at the bottom of her post it is posted and has been for several days...if you scroll down to below her list of paints etc it pops up. I will admit I am using a computer, not a phone...don't know if that makes a difference?

Sally ohanesian

Ok…I’m on painting three. I just can’t seem to get the negative shapes

Sally ohanesian

I'm so glad to read others are having a hard time

Leslie Young

Weird, when I tried today it wasn't there. I googled a different reference. I'll try again now.

Leslie Young

Now it's there. I was using patreon on my tablet, maybe it doesn't work there? 🫠🫠

Chalice

Hi 🙂 I have just joined to learn how to paint. I have the size 2 & 8 brushes. Do I have to get size 4 & 10? I am planning to create postcard sized paintings. Would appreciate input. Thanks!

Suz

I am not finding others paintings posted. Where do I look?

Regina

Mine is very blue. I’m using Windsor newton but I also have Daniel smith, qor and schmincke and they are more blue than hers.

Mikelle

Click on "chats." On my desktop, it's located to the left, between the search icon ("explore") and the bell icon ("notifications").

Mikelle

Personally, I prefer my size 2 and 8 brushes for the paintings that I've done. I've got several other sizes but those are the ones I've been using here. completed about 10 from last year and all of 2026 so far. Maybe try it and see how it goes?

Chalice

Thanks Mikelle. Will give it a try and see how it goes.

Anita Stolk

I have noticed that I grab my size 6 with a pointy tip the most. It's so versatile for wet in to wet as well as tiny details. If I had to advise you I'd say a good quality 6 is a good addition to your 2 and 8.

Chalice

Thanks Anita. That would be a round size 6 brush?

Mikelle

Maybe start with a painting that has only one or two clouds. Let yourself enjoy it, both the colors and the memories of joyful summer days as you paint it. Then try another with one more cloud, and take your time. Negative space is something that definitely gets easier with practice. And playful practice allows your brain to make deeper connections. When we feel stress, our brains are wired to shut down our contemplative pathways. And contemplation is where we learn things more quickly and more deeply.

Anita Stolk

yes, but there is s difference in the brands. Some rounds are really round and others have a more pointy tip. I love my Princeton heritage.

Cheryl George

SO fun! Having a hard time leaving negative space but the practice (4x at this point) is helpful!

Renae Fomiatti

This one was so hard! Have made three imperfect attempts!

Camille

I painted this many times. I got a happier result when I just left out those tiny clouds at the bottom. It"s just for practice right? Still a very hard thing do for me.

Stephanie Stearns

Hi! I've only recently found your content. With no art background and 63 years young I struggle with negative painting. Have you demonstrated any other ways to make clouds that are easier and achieve the same result?

Lindsay

I revisited this one (to make a card for a friend) and I had more success when I sketched in the clouds, painted the sky wet-on-dry to that outline, and then wet-on-wetted within each cloud individually to form the shadows. It broke it down enough for me to be able to attack the “wet-on-wetness” of it. One cloud at a time was enough lol, and also I was better able to attend to what I wanted for that shadow, where I sort of lost the plot when the whole page was wet-on-wet..

Gwen Ritch

I did this twice and it’s horrible I need to see a reference for sure

Sara Abdawani

It would be great if the final product stays in the corner as a reference picture while we paint so we know what we are working towards.. also blobby 😂
