Brick wall for 29! This might not seem like an exciting topic, but if you've ever tried to paint a building with brick and textures and struggled to get the balance just right, this will help! I love the steps at the end that make it feel 3D with the shadows. I used masking fluid around the edges of the broken wall shape so I could paint the bricks right over the edge and get crisp lines. This is one you can take slow and build up the layers of texture, making sure they dry in between. I used a flat brush for thee brick shape, but you can paint each brick with a round brush as well. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Masking fluid: Pigmented masking fluid, Winsor & Newton brand

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - cad yellow, cad red, and ultramarine blue.

Brushes: round 4 Princeton, flat 3/8" masters touch.

You are an early bird today! I love the simplicity of this composition, a treasure of bricks hiding behind plaster or stucco as we see so often in older Mexican buildings here in AZ! Going to make time to watch the video this morning...and wondering too...when are you leaving for Scotland? that is this month right???!!

Kristin Van Leuven

haha yes! I leave for Scotland on Sunday so I've got the paintings all pre painted and ready to go, so you'll notice a few more early birds over the next two weeks. Yes I love the plaster/stucco brick buildings. They are so inspiring

helen

I love this SO much. Will need to try again as I trouble achieving your color. !

Kathryn

Hello Kristin, quick question for you regarding the masking fluid. What do you do with the fluid in the bottle cap when you're finished? Pour it back in the bottle? In the trash? For me, it gets gummy inside the lid and I'm not sure the best way to manage it. Thank you.

Terri Benyon

Travel safe, and have a wonderful time with all the attendees. Scotland is beautiful. Enjoy!

What I did was use another small cap to pour into. I didn’t want to chance mixing drying fluid with the “pure” fluid in the bottle. Then I let the other cap dry so I could just pull off any remaining fluid.

Kathryn

Thanks Jeany. That’s a great idea. I have plenty of little caps around. I will give it a try.

Michelle Thomas

Does anyone know what size of flat brush Kristin used?

Morgan Powis

What if i dont have masking fluid?

Alexis Londo

Me too! And intricate wood work with grain and artistry! Loved this

I knew this one would be a challenge. I'm not sure if mine is a brick wall, or whether it is more like a cave paining. A good challenge.
