Hi Everyone! Yes, I know September just started haha, but I want to give you a head's up about what is coming in October. I will be out of town on October 1st, and this is usually when we have our live class about that month's technique.

I will still be posting a video on October 1st going over that month's topic: masking fluid, but since I will be unable to go live, it will be a pre recorded video that will post here to patreon.

The beauty of the live classes has always been that I can answer your questions in real time, so to help me prep for the pre recorded video, will you please post your questions and comments about masking fluid below?

This way I can know what I need to cover, if there are any pain points you're having, and I can try to answer your questions while I demonstrate how to use masking fluid.

Looking forward to seeing what questions you have!

I struggle with creating thin lines with masking fluid. Making the white space look natural after removing the masking fluid.

Kathleen Livingston

I have never tried masking fluid over a colour wash. Would the wash lift with the masking fluid?

Becky Wilding

I think it's just tricky to know what I will certainly want masked and what I certainly do NOT want masked to maintain consistency with colors and values, etc.

Leslie Young

It definitely works! I made these following one of Kristin's tutorials, each color is masked before going to the next!

Harry Brownsell

Do we have to use masking fluid 🤣 it's going to be more mess than splatter month. I'm already picking the brush that's going to be written off 💀

Leslie Young

A better picture. I don't know why that one was half of it.

Dawn Koop

This is exactly what I wanted to ask - thin lines...are elusive.

Katherine

I also struggle with thin lines and also exact shapes, like a building. When I try to touch up places after removing, the paint doesn't seem to cover as well. And finally..do you use other tools, such as a silicone color shaper to apply the masking fluid?

Kristin Van Leuven

haha I'll make a note to include some masking fluid alternatives 😉

Susan C Terris

I have the recommended masking fluid brand W&N. Since I do not use it alot, it is very rubbery & hard. Thinning it down, it is clumpy. I have tiny brushes, but I can't get thin lines at all. I'd use wax if I could find a product that allowed thin lines. I am SOoooo frustrated anytime there is masking fluid in the lesson. I got another brand from Temu, this one is too watery but does make thin lines that break up. Is there ANY masking fluid brand to be had that works?

Heidi Borgwardt

I don't know how helpful this might be, but after reading lots of reviews, I chose the Schminke Liquid Frisket (blue tinted jar) and so far I've tried it with a paper clip (for the lightning) and a small brush (for the hummingbird) and I like it so far. It washes off easily, and I read that it can be thinned with water for splatter etc.

Can you use a heat gun to dry masking fluid? What if the masking fluid pulls up the paper? Does the paper quality matter when using masking fluid? Whats the best time frame to leave masking fluid before it gets too hard to come off the paper? What's the difference between using a brush and the rubber tools some of the masking fluid comes with?

Robyn McKenzie

Hi Kristin and thanks for choosing masking fluid as our November topic. I have two questions: 1. Have you ever tried to mask the edge of a bush or shrub with a dry brush or softer edge? I have been experimenting with trying to do this without much success in getting an organic, random. leafy edge. Do you have suggestions for masking fluid brands and/or tools to achieve this effect? And my second question is: could you demonstrate some different masking fluid brands and tools and compare and contrast them…maybe with suggestions for best uses? Thanks in advance!

I would like to mask thin, not straight lines with masking fluid but even my finest brush makes lines of different thickness. Can I use something else?

Sarah Blosser

Alternative to masking fluid, what to look for when buying masking fluid, options for applying without destroying brushes

debbie

I have been liking pebo drawing gum a lot. A bonus is that it’s blue and easy to see.

Susan C Terris

Thank you Heidi! It might not be "perfect" though I'll settle for "better than what I've got now."

Erin Berlin

Use a paperclip or a pin for Super thin lines.

Ute B

Thanks Erin! Good idea! I have also somewhere an old ink pen from my father! Hope I will find it.

Terri Benyon

I use this one as well and am very happy with it, no issues with the paper with this one either.

Shar

Can’t seem to make the fluid flow with a paper clip maybe need to thin it down

Harry Brownsell

My real questions for masking fluid is. I am too impatient to wait for it to dry. I use a heat gun and then my tape lifts and I get runs. Do I just have to auck it up or are there other ways of it drying quicker. How much soap do you use in your brush. How long before you need to reapply soap to save your brush. How do you keep a fine point. I've also seen people use dip pens and the such for masking fluid does this work can you show some other tools that a brush for using it. Are there other uses for masking fluid we have not gone over yet?

Felinefoster

I shake my masking fluid before applying and noticed little bubbles when I apply to the paper

Helen

Alternatives to masking fluid, as last time with splatter month my face started itching from the masking fluid. I have a latex allergy and even though the brand I have is latex free, there was something in it that bothered me. How long can you leave masking fluid on for? How to use a ruling pen with masking fluid?

Maura

That was my first question, alternatives, brand options if you could test run a few or home recipes!

Maura

What is the shelf life on masking fluid for you, how often do you restock? Is it possible to thin with water or another fluid base to make thinner lines and have it still perform correctly? Can you use it within a painting as texture in some way and not remove it? Can it be mixed with paint within a painting for effect?

Nancy Draper

Just as others have suggested - - trying to make very thin lines with masking fluid is my most frustrating situation! Thank you for asking!

Alicia

Excellent questions- mine are cover above thanks for the heads up!

Chelsey G

I’d love to hear your thoughts on different brands of masking fluid. A masking fluid challenge like the experiment you did on the blue paints would be really interesting. How do you keep your masking fluid from going clumpy?

Erin Berlin

The ruling pen holds the masking fluid really well. I havent tried my ink pen but I dont think it would work quite as well.

Bobbi

Your preferred masking fluid and why. Soap on your brush -v- no soap? Tips for not wasting and how thick is to thick and how thin is too thin?

Michelle Thomas

How do I paint details with masking fluid? Can it be watered down at all, it feels so gloopy and impossible to control even with a very small brush.

Bear Raeb Barrett

Oh also…. I found that my small pallet knife makes beautiful thin lines

Shanan Aspen's Messy Middles

No matter how precisely I think I make a line with making fluid, it's always lumpy and blobby. The stuff seems to have a mind of its own. How do you get crisp edges?

Joei Bassett

How do you decide when you use masking fluid? Size? Amount? Tricky edges?

Chris

Perhaps this is cheating, but I use a masking fluid pen and it works beautifully. I have more control and precision in what I'm creating and it drys a blue (or green or whatever color you choose). My set came with two tips for different line depths. (chisel/finepoint). And I don't have to worry about cleaning it up or it drying up. Elizabeth

yes this is what I would like to know also

Elizabeth

Yes I am interested in different masking fluids, I've tried Holbein which I find runs away from me, Daniel Smith which feels too thick and a South African Brand that just about knocks me senseless with the smell. I really dislike using masking fluid, but it's so lovely to just be able to paint a background freely ha ha.

Elizabeth

Sadly when I try to open this, because I live in South Africa, it will not open.

Elizabeth

I have a Holbein masking fluid pen and it doesn't always completely mask the area, so I am never sure how hard to press or anything, so a test of a masking fluid pen would also be nice.

Bear Raeb Barrett

They are silicone brushes The masking fluid does not stick to them

Erin

I found this really neat masking fluid pen, and it’s refillable!

Camille

A reminder to hold the WN bottle when you take the top off which is not easy. Haha. Twice when I opened the bottle, a string of latex attached and made the bottle fall over. Twice I scooped up what I could with a pastry scraper and put back in the bottle. I found an old jar of Grumbacher Miskit, about 10 or more years old. It’s still very fluid. And is colored orange. It works well and the top is not a safety top so it’s easier to open. I was quite surprised it was still good. All my questions have mentioned above. Thanks!!

Camille

I read about this a while back. You can thin with water but too much water will make it unremovable. Also only thin a small amount at a time. Don’t add water to the bottle. Hopefully Kristen can give us her experience with this.

Lori Smith

When I stir my masking fluid before using it, it gets air bubbles in it that are very hard to get out—but if the air bubbles end up in what I’m masking off, then it doesn’t really work. Does it need to be stirred every time before use? That’s what I was taught but it’s not working for me!

Maura

I ordered one to be ready for October! Thank you Erin!

Susan C Terris

Thanks Heidi, I just ordered some. I appreciate your response!

I find that the masking fluid lifts the paper. Is this the paper I'm using?

Mama V

I'd like a recommendation on the masking fluid pens. I do ok when I use a brush. When trying to make finer lines, I try the pens. Although they make a blue mark on the paper, it seems when I've painted, the blue doesn't come off. Is that a function of pens in general, or are some better than others?

Amy Laskin

My masking fluid seems to leave a yellow cast behind. It also makes bubbles which adds thick parts to thin lines. Any tips on either of these two issues?

Jade Winfree

How do you use this? I bought it but I am confused. Do you just dip it in the masking fluid?

DebH2Ogal

I had to ask AI what was the difference between Frisket and masking fluid. I went to a store that only sold the "Frisket".... It is the same thing. ;) What did we do before Google?! I like my W&N brand. It does the job. I also bought one of those funkie tools that lets you dip and use it as a pen. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075B44QJ7?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_P54S6N8EH1DJT4477RC1 It is great for fine lines. I haven't had much success with the rubber tip brushes. Maybe someone has some ideas. I think application can be tough. I don't like using a brush. I feel like I don't have any control. I have also use the bottle with the metal spout but it always gets gummy inside. So.... I guess I want to know how to use it without much drama? I also want to know if there is anyway to help it dry quicker?

Ute B

Sorry Jade but I have’t tried it yet. 🥲

Heidi Borgwardt

Oh I hope you like it too! I used it again this week for highlights on a card that a family member requested for Veterans, using a small brush (with white synthetic fibers so I could be sure to see it was washed out later), and I think it worked well for preserving the white space. My only issue was with the tiny stars, but that might be a personal thing because they're tiny and difficult for me to paint consistently.
