Raspberry for 71! In today's painting we're using a reference photo and we're focusing on light and shadow. If you take your time to sketch out your drupelet shapes first, then we focus on light and shadow building in and around each one. There's only a few wet into wet parts, so take your time with the building up of the layers, highlights and deep contrast. Only do a background if you want! I can't wait to see how you do with this one. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette. All colors are Winsor and Newton, except the manganese is Holbein - cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, manganese, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - lemon yellow, cad red, perm rose, and ultramarine

Brushes: round 4 & 10 - Princeton

Susie I am behind even though I started last year! I can never get to them all. Enjoy wherever you are in the process. It's all about learning!

For some reason I kept sketching too many circles that were too small, though I started over at least 3 times. Other than I was happy with my painting and background ... until the next day when I tried to add those tiny raspberry "hairs." Big mistake - huge! The yellows weren't dark enough, so I tried gouache, which was too thick and opaque, and when I tried to soften the gouache it dragged all of my deep colors into the background. [Sigh] I should've left it alone.

This one was a trust the process. When finished I still wasn't sure. I took the dogs out and when I came back I was amazed.
