Hi everyone! I can't believe September is almost over and after next Tuesday, we will have completed 78 paintings this year. Blending month has been so fun and I loved manipulating color and texture to get soft even blends. Below is the schedule and topic theme for the month of October. As a reminder, this year the 100 tiny paintings will revolve around a new technique each month, keeping the same Tuesday/Friday schedule so that we end up with 8-9 paintings per month and 100 by the end of the year.

The theme for October: Masking fluid

Thursday October 1st: Pre-recorded "live class" 9 AM Arizona time

This live class is pre-recorded since I will be out of the country at a watercolor retreat. I have filmed it similar to a live class, answering the questions from the masking fluid post from September.

This live class will deep dive and cover the basics of this month's technique: Masking fluid. Types, brands, how to use it, how to get organic shapes and straight edges. We also talk about when to use it, how to layer it, and what to do and avoid to get it to work well. We'll also cover exercises you can practice in your sketchbook and "homework" to help you improve this technique in stress free ways before you start on a painting.

Tuesday/Friday tiny paintings: Each Tuesday and Friday this month a tiny painting will be posted. The tiny painting videos include full video instructions, color mixing and reference photos and sketch outlines when applicable.

End of month live class: Wednesday October 28th @ 11 AM Arizona time

At the end of the month we will paint a picture together from a reference photo. This class is also recorded and saved so you can watch back at any time. We will be voting on and choosing together a picture that uses a lot of the masking techniques we have gone over this past month. This will help us solidify what we've learned into something bigger as we walk through how to paint a piece from start to finish, live.

I can't wait to paint with you this month!

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Kristin

Rainie

I have a question Kristin. Can I use knead putty eraser on watercolor paper to fade my pencil marks?

The Cozy Canvas

Hey Rainie, most definitely, that's what I use. It's really helpful for me not to be so rough with the watercolor paper.

Thank you

In preparation for masking fluid month - does anyone have a recommendation for a masking fluid that does not have any odor of any kind? I am using Winsor and Newton and the smell is just so off-putting to me that I dread opening it. I've tried Fineline and found the bottles clogged too easily, and Pebeo markers but they just aren't fine-tipped enough. Any recommendations?

Bear Raeb Barrett

When I get home I will get you the name of mine. I have never noticed a smell

Jeanette

I’m looking forward to gaining more skill with masking fluid. Safe travels!

Jennifer, the same one Bear posted? That's so interesting, a friend uses the same W&N one I do and he said he doesn't notice a smell, but I certainly do! I find it so awful that I might try to challenge myself to find an alternate way to do masking fluid month :)

Answering my own question here - I did a little AI dive into this and apparently most masking fluid contains ammonia, hence the odor. Supposedly Schmincke makes one that is odorless. I just ordered a bottle on Amazon... we'll see. Excited to try it because it's also blue, so maybe easier to see than my W&N!

An update: the blue Schmincke doesn't have any odor that my overly sensitive nose can detect!
