2026-09-05 07:00 Throws book on table. I found the wrinkle! Dino racing is from Tomb of Annihilation and this is what the random encounter sections states. “Random encounters aren’t tailored to characters of a particular level. If the characters encounter hostile creatures beyond their ability to defeat, give them opportunities to run, hide, negotiate, or otherwise avoid certain death. You can also have other creatures arrive and provide a distraction that the characters can use to make their escape. For example, if a character needs to make a crucial ability check or saving throw, you can have a chwinga (see appendix D) appear, cast guidance or resistance on the character, and then disappear on its next turn.” So “DM shenanigans” was totally a by the book option, but seriously though that is a case by case judgement call. I personally don’t think a big pack of raptors is an impossible encounter for a mid level party and this is just a case of bad beats rolling. The dice told their story and the story was they were destined to be dino dinner. Edit* also the Raptor encounter DOES call for a single group stealth check in it’s entry so that was totally above board furthermore it actaully 3d6 raptors not 2d6 so 11 isn’t even that huge an outliner. Full text for anyone wondering: “Velociraptor. A pack of 3d6 velociraptors (see appendix D) burst out from behind cover and attack. Make a single Dexterity (Stealth) check for the dinosaurs, with advantage. Any character whose passive Wisdom (Perception) score equals or exceeds the velociraptors’ check result is not surprised.“

This is not an unreasonable request. And I’m not a hater, I have paid them $5-$15 a month for YEARS. And I’m voicing an opinion about how their quality of show has dropped, due to them being a little out of control with the self-congratulatory nonsense. Also, I’m the only one of my friend group who even still listens, they have lost three dedicated listeners that I know of because of this same issue.

He was crit and went down and had a disease that kept him from being healed or made it harder and he died. Rather than kill him I just made him unavailable the rest of the session so rhey were down one

Interesting, that's pretty poorly designed then. Surprised is an extremely powerful mechanic that is balanced around the fact that it's nearly impossible to pull off with multiple combatants. Group stealth is infamously difficult both in real life and in DND, and this is reflected in the mechanics by normally making every individual roll separately. Because even a single failed stealth roll prevents the surprised status for every person who succeeded their perception, the odds of successfully rolling 11 stealth passes are vastly smaller than rolling 1. So yes, TPK Extraordinaire was going by the book, but the book was poorly designed so... Yeah. Can't really blame them for trusting in the book I guess.

not only does the book circumvent regular stealth rules to make things harder but 3-18 enemies is such an unhinged potential margin of outcome, even with the bellcurve. I ran a module where the enemies occasionally came in packs of 2d4 and even that amount of swinginess was stupid, 3d6 is just absurdly dumb and is the kind of thing that a developer can only come up with by not thinking at all

frankly the DM needed to rewrite the encounter. "give them opportunities to run, hide, negotiate" does not work with "3-18 creatures with pack tactics roll a single stealth roll thus circumventing the stealth rules". the only workaround for that is just a strong party or scouting. even with a chwinga helping somehow I don't think a creature coming in after two party members have been downed is really gonna be at all satisfying or interesting
