I JUST CHECKED LIKE 5 mins ago, anyway BAHUMIA

Mila Janus

Jake tried so hard to get through everquest just for Caldwell to fuck him over 😂

Z Carthy

Murph, please play Stellaris and give us an amazing Spelljammer campaign. I'm begging 🙏🏻

alli

callista is the (a) summer fairy in eldermourne so misspeaking her name for queen of the summer court isn’t that far off. it was funny and of course the first time caldwell has ever misspoken but it wasn’t crabster levels lmao

Xacris

Y'all keep teasing me with how much you're talking about Pathfinder!

han!!!!

you can also put your turtle/tortoise in the fridge for hibernation

Poronekton

Wait who is Kalista? Huh I had better ask Caldwell

Chin

The Turtle/Toad alliance is long known, in fact Scandinavian languages refer to turtles as ”Shield Toads”

Jordan Marschke

EverQuest is still around in 2024??? I never played but I sat and watched an older friend play and was hooked!

Ryan

Haha, my name is Ryan Murphy. The start of this episode already made me so happy! I'm a motherfucking Tarrasque!

Sam

How is no one taking about the fact that all of them forgot that they've had the burying the turtles conversation before?!

Cameron A

I really like the idea of a turrask-born

Jessica

I’m talking to myself like did they not have this same conversation already! I had to come on here and make sure I didn’t make it up

Lia

Get the nostalgia murph, I was a beta tester for Everquest Online Adventures and the politics of the game were a real draw to it, and I kinda miss custom "train messages" when the whole zone was about to get pulled

Aaron Burnell

True story: a friend of mine had an aunt who specifically got a tortoise just to know she would get to will it to her daughter and that the daughter will be pissed. Auntie isn't dead yet, but Cousin is already pissed about it

Mike Howard

Jonathan the tortoise, alive today, was born 6 years before John Wilkes Booth, easily old enough to star in the play and also be co-conspirator

Clever Innuendo

I feel like I've been Mandela Effected that it's Ryan Nurphy and not Ryan Urphy. Have I really been wrong this whole time?

Ethan Tabor

This is for sure the 2nd time AT LEAST there has been talk of burying turtles on short rest😂

Bryan Barton

This turtle tangent takes terrible turns.

Coach Romano

The more consistent method is popping your turtle in the fridge for the winter (not a joke)

PseudoDragonCat

So the only thing I know about buried turtles is sometimes snapping turtles will lay their nests in your garden, and then if the babies don’t hatch before winter, they’ll stay underground and then come out in the spring.

Gabriel Graywood

Was Ultris the representative for frost giants in that counsel?

Ivy Stocking

As a rural girl who grew up in Michigan wetlands, spring peepers and snappers coexist, I assume this is because peepers are tree frogs so that’s probably their territory. The snappers would also nest in our garden and I would see a ton of baby snappers all the tome

caustic-laz

was thinking the same thing, no frost giant rep except for Calder

Grass

I thought it was Urphy also so I guess we shared our original universe

chris Mcgrew

Sooo some Mammals can go in what is called a state of torpor so if your hamsters look like they passed away they might just be in a deep sleep

CommodoreBlue

I swear they’ve has this exact turtle conversation before.

Savannah Haven

I love peeking at the comments when I’m only like 5 mins in and seeing what tangent they end up going on

68rosie419

Same! I got major deja vu but I can’t remember where else they talked about it

aiyana graham art

they definitely have. I think maybe in an eldermourne short rest?

aiyana graham art

in summary from the article, it can be very dangerous and you should only do it if you're experienced and that some reptile vets will offer the service. also that it is not just doing it in the backyard and is a highly controlled and specialized space

m. white

As soon as Murph said they look at you dubiously, I knew it was EverQuest. The way he's describing it, it sounds like classic EQ (P99 or official classic/TLP), which is the best era of EQ. I wonder if he walked right past me while I was slaughtering guards outside Felwithe castle?

Karl Peterson

We have a large pet tortoise. It spends a lot of it's time digging burrows. During the winter it just stays in one of them hibernating. It climbs out for spring.

Quality TBF

I cant believe there was so much snapping tea turtle talk, but no "Snapple Turtle" pun

thebillmm

Um actually, arctic ground squirrels can survive freezing during winter!

Jenn T

Yes! I am listening to eldermourne short rests for the first time right now between new episodes. And I just heard them talking about burying turtles. And Emily mentioned something she watched about a woman who bought a turtle as a child that lives 80+ years and she's dedicated her life to them. And the interviewer asked if turtles can love, and the woman gave a stitlrd broken hearted "I hope so". 😅 Anyways yes, I think I just heard this in the last week and it's during the eldermourne era of patreon content.

Clever Innuendo

I could see that. I just liked Ryan/Rian Urphy because it was just taking a letter off of each name.

Jenn T

Idk if I should be amused by the aunt or sympathetic to the cousin. Either way, this is a very entertaining long-term spite move.

han!!!!

It's Raedak right? The paladin of gruumsh that became half of havoc

Kidtruck91

Hey guys just a some info turtles and tortoises will bury themselves. Check out Golden State tortoises on yt

Kidtruck91

He was also alive for JFK. This tortoise is a true fiend.

Kidtruck91

The ones that we've found. Who knows what lies further in the deep?

Jack M

Charles Darwin and Steve Irwin owned the same turtle

hannah

after listening to this i went to youtube and what was the first video i saw but a turtle exhumation. wild

Casey White

Ya. I am confident that cephalopods would rule the world if they had longer life spans.

Adam Scull

Yall never fail to go ff the rails and I love it

Amanda Pruitt

Anyone else keep reading “ego” as “eggo” 🤦🏼‍♀️

Joshua Saldana

Every time someone talks about EverQuest, I get so happy. It was such a huge part of my upbringing. Thanks Murph. I bet Emily would like Innothule Swamp or Kelethin. I’m also glad to hear y’all are enjoying Pathfinder 2e. It’s very crunchy. But, if you’re interested, the Find the Path Podcast are hands down the best at rules and would certainly help or play with you. They are also big fans of y’all!

Grass

My uncle told me a giant snapping turtle lived at the bottom of the lake and he would attack if you stayed too long in the water. So every time my aunt wanted us to swim across the lake I thought there was a chance it would be my last

Tracy Burns

What happens if you forget where you burry your turtle?

Adam!!!!!

i love reading the comments before listening and asking myself "I wonder what they talked about this short rest for people to comment about turtles so much"

Corey

Hey unrelated but I recently watch the Pencils Down game changer with my wife and she said “why to I feel like Caldwell Tanner is a huge nerd but also he’s secretly hot?” And I said “Because he is absolutely a nerd, and his hotness is actually not a secret at all. It’s just secondary to the nerdiness. But both are there.”

Ben L.

The dancing baby reference was for me

Matty H

There's always money in the turtle hole

Evan Kelley

I was playing in a pond as a kid and I dug a snapping turtle out with my hands thinking it was a rock. I threw it into the pond and ran. Lucky I made it out with all of my finger webbing intact 🐢 🖐️

Cory

Turtles do not hibernate. They just buried them alive.

Ben Miller

my parents have a Sonoran desert tortoise (they live in Phoenix) that is about 17 years old I think. He is about a foot wide and will continue to grow. My mom has built a garden for him in her backyard. They do indeed get lost when they dig their burrows for the winter if you don't create boundaries under the ground. She had to dig up a huge portion of the garden to lay down chicken wire and spare tiles to keep him from ending up in the neighbors yard (or worse, under concrete). He will likely live to be around 100 if he stays healthy, and my younger brother has laid claim to him when my parents pass (hopefully not for a good while!) and will likely have him until he is retired. He is surprisingly low maintenance after the initial preparing of his enclosure because my parents live in his native habitat. All they really have to do is bring him some food and water every few days and keep the plants in the garden alive (which my mom does anyway). Not sure about other turtles but Sonoran tortoises burrow themselves during winter and are pretty sedentary for about 4-5 months. You can help them out by digging a specific burrow and giving them a hutch and if they're lucky they will just expand the burrow you dug for them instead of digging their own.

Beav

Fuck Fuck Fuck! (Rushes back outside)

Sam

“I’m in ponds and creeks more often” we’ve all seen the photos, Tanner

Sean Flanagan

Chiming in to say seagulls can live to be up to 75 years old

Wyatt Edmondson

Im going insane because i swear to god they have had this turtle discussion in a short rest years ago, however i an so so exhausted today that i am unsure if i have fully contrived this please someone tell me im not insane

Winterbat

Lol didn’t even realize I was reading it wrong until I saw your comment

Erin H.

Ok there are a lot of comments already so very sorry if this has been addressed! But turtles can indeed bury themselves for the winter DEPENDING on what type of turtle it is. Some turtles, especially native turtles like box turtles, do brumate for the winter (brumation is basically reptile hibernation) and may dig themselves up to 24 inches down to get below the frost line. However, burying them yourself (especially as deep as the tiktok video) is likely unnecessary and potentially dangerous unless you are specifically instructed to do so by a herpetologist with knowledge on the species. Brumation isn't necessary for survival, but many reptile owners do intentionally trigger a winter brumation even indoors by turning down the cage temps, reducing daylight hours, etc. and there is some evidence that it is beneficial for their health to have this winter "reset". Especially if you are a breeder because when reptiles come out of brumation they are very horny LOL TL;DR: Don't bury your turtles, but DO let them bury themselves and they will be fine

Erin H.

Untrue. Some species of turtles do brumate, which is a reptile form of hibernation. Normally they will just bury themselves though - no need to do it manually.

Thimo The Fool

I cannot confirm with certainty, but I had the same thought Either we are both mad or it actually happened twice

Wyatt Edmondson

Praying it happened twice, but i will accept if we are both simply mad

Eric Bouchey

Really surprised his name didn't come up at all.. at least they should know who ultris is and should have clocked calder's helm

Tosha Diamond-Huey

my partner and I just impulsively bought 2 turtles off the street last week... still trying to figure out what kind they are, I really hope we don't need to bury them lmao

bibibirdy

I’m no turtleologist (and neither are they) but the way they confuse turtles and tortoises is really sending me

ColbyCheese

Relistening to campaign 1, is it possible that the Hellfire crownhads a similar deal to the Fey crowns? And could it be destroyed by the serpents, even though the prophecy was made for the Few Wild?

Benjamin Korynta

Let's start a new Patreon "meals for speedy"

Shambles

I'm a bit late but in regards to turtle chat: I can confirm that many tortoise owners will hibernate their pet tortoise in a fridge. My friend does this (he has a dedicated fridge) as it means the tortoise can hibernate safely and he doesn't have to worry about temperature fluctuations, where especially low temps could kill the tort. During winter he'll regularly weigh his tortoise without waking it up and it'll naturally start to wake up as we come out of winter. He even does an unboxing video for when he wakes him up 😄

Shambles

Oh also, all tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises 🐢👍

Shambles

Aw man, I did a big post about hibernating turtles and I don't think it posted! Short version: Many tortoise owners hibernate their tortoises in the fridge so that the temperature is stable. It's safer, particularly in areas where the temperature might not be stable through winter. My friend does this and he has a dedicated fridge for it. He even does an unboxing video in the spring (the tort goes in a wee cardboard box with some bedding).

SoPHisTiCatED-Ox

When j heard " who is him!" I instantly thought Jake better say I am Him (thinking of the meme) then they referenced the meme lol. I love naddpod

Grimmie

This is incredible because this is the second time "Bury your Turts!" Has come up in a short rest.

Grimmie

It's definitely happened before, but not at this length

Not Another D&D Podcast

Truly living for all the Turtle Lore being dropped in the comments. Thank you for sharing! ~Caldwell

M Bee

Everybody has admirably covered & sourced the turtle topic, just had one thing to add that might make it make a little more sense for anyone not interested enough to delve: In regions or homes where winter temps fluctuate, turtles would dip in & out of their hibernation state. If they wake enough to eat, partially digested material can ferment in their digestive tract & kill them. That's one example of a reason owners might simulate pondbottom mud depth by burying non-burrowing turtles. (Randomly had to care for a niece's turtle during a family emergency this winter & was quite concerned ambient temps might wake the creature prematurely.)

Jaxicle

Okay, this is completely unrelated to the ep, but is related to the turtle talk. Imma need y'all to play Frog Fractions. Best Game Ever. Watch out for the Indignancy. 👀🐸🧮

Sephiroth Did Nothing Wrong

I'm pretty sure Murph has said Ultris is from a time far after Aeriox (oof, spelling..) and the original Giant/Dragon War, but well before C1.

Josh Kumar

I've binged all of naddpod over the course of ~6 months, it was originally Rian Urphy and has become Ryan Nurfy as the bit evolves.

Marge In Charge

A great resource for turtle and tortoise and terrapin information is garden state tortoise on YouTube.

Charlie Morris

Am I crazy or is it Deja Vu that we have had this conversation about burying turtles before?

Winterbat

You gotta honor the cock.

Connor

The utter disdain in Emily’s voice at “I live on through my children” is inspiring

Blaize Gordon

I need someone to animate the section of the turtle talk where they're the trintvale triplets cause murph going off on his little tangent reminded me of Jens in the mediaverse

KennedyH

I am going through the backlog of short rests and keeping up with current shows at the same time, and somehow this episode and the C3 E15 Princess Shiverblight short rest came up almost back to back. As soon as I heard Murph say "people bury their turtles" for the second time in a week, I felt like I was losing my mind. 😅

KennedyH

Short rest for campaign 3 episode 15! You're not crazy!

Lockwood Warlock

My family has a big ass tortoise and he has his own house with house warming, he buried himself in the winter but since he has a warmer house he looks like a rock barely sticking out of the ground- and in the spring we will look out and he is roaming the garden. Now he is hanging out with the chickens for the summer

Ben Brassart

Does Murph know about Everquest Project 1999? If not, he needs to check it out.

Robert

Emily making fun of Everquest hurt my soul :( I was in the first 400 in closed beta way back.. game ruined 10 years of my life and i still have cravings to log in (but i don't.. cause it's heroin..)

Mason N.

Speaking of things hibernating. How is little old guppy doing ?

Miranda B, Crick DVM

I felt like I was having an aneurysm during the entire turtle conversation 😂

Colby Greer

Can we get an official Ryan Nurphy stat block🤣

Youlikeyellow

My boyfriend is, no shit, a wildlife biologist currently studying western pond turtles and tracking their hibernation patterns, which means this time of year he's out camping in the wilderness most of the week while the turtles are emerging from their little self made graves. This episode made me feel like he was here next to me annoying me with turtle info. So I guess what I'm trying to say is thanks naddpod 😊

Faith Huisman

So our friends had this pet frog, not a turtle, and he lived in their garage (just a wild frog who chose to love them) and one day it got so cold and the frog literally FROZE into a solid little frog-sicle, and broke their hearts. With heavy hearts they brought it outside onto the porch and put it in their porch planter pot, just as a little resting place, and I kid you not, the next day the frog was totally fine. He defrosted and was awake and happy - they named him Jesús the frog bc he rose from the dead and from what I know he lived out the rest of his long happy life in the garage again. Dig up your turtles and thaw your frogs, folks, it’s springtime 😂

Faith Huisman

My little sister called turtles “Churtles” for the first six years of her life so it brought me a lot of joy to hear Emily calling them that.

aiyana graham art

relistening to c3 and they also talk about it in the short rest of episode 15

Ollie

All info I found online said oldest known lived to be 49 yrs ?

Dr. Eggman

The people who went viral for burying their turtles in the fall and digging them up in the spring: -The turtles are named Squirtle and Jelly Bean -They mark where their turtles are so the don't lose them -Not every turtle species hibernates underground -Wild turtles will bury and dig themselves up, those turtles are just pampered and don't wanna go through all that hassle -At a certain depth underground the temp doesn't fluctuate much from ~50°F so they're not frozen just cold -The turtles go into a stasis where their metabolism slows to almost nothing and they get what little oxygen they need through their butt from pockets of air throughout the surrounding ground

KSM101

Shout out to a blast from the past my absolute favorite movie

Johnathan

I came from my Spotify integration here to find this comment I was sure they’ve had this conversation

zizeksmom

“Do ya’ll ever think about snapping turtles?” Yes. Yes I do.

Mariah K. Pixi

No mention of how immortal lobsters are? Cmon Caldwell!!

CommodoreBlue

“Bury your turtles” part 2. Episode 58

Michael Graham Abernathy

Caldwell, as a fellow southern boy, I will back you up that no amount of fear of snapping turtles is disproportionate. One of them almost bit my dog once.

Dragon

Greenland shark off the coast of Greenland and Iceland that they found and it’s a female and she is if I remember correctly about four hundred and sixty something years old.

HeyYeah

C3 short rests for 57-66 seem to not be a part of the short rest collection

K. Diane

As a wife who also cannot get into playing EverQuest even after her husband waxes nostalgic nonstop about it…I feel so seen. 🤣 it’s such a well-designed game but the grind is so hard and the graphics are rough to go back to.

Garbo Embargo

Holy crap! Once I was walking home from the bus stop and a big ass snapping turtle slid down a dirt embankment on the side on the road. I watched it. I broke a stick about 18 inches long to kinda poke at it. That things neck stretched out so far and it bit me on the "webbing" between my thumb and index finger. I bled for a mile as I walked home lol. That's wild that Emily thinks about this.

riskutforthebriskut

yea i'd say 99% of people who own turtles/tortoise do not need to hibernate them

Hal

Here to say that the Allie McBeal "ooga chucka baby" reference WAS for me

Taylor

Without a doubt they’ve talked about this multiple times lol I’ve been binging campaign three
