Elandriel

Woo got my notification just as I posted a comment on the ep!

austinoxner

I love these guys. I wish I knew who they were.

chris Mcgrew

Thank the gods for the 2 crew!

alli

if emily loves pod racing, she should watch ani!: a parody (a star wars musical about vader between the prequels and the originals where he wants to pod race again that is free on youtube)

Elandriel

One um ackchewlly. Swords aren’t typically all that heavy. Not the kind you’d want to be fighting with anyway. You’ll certainly find oversized overweight blades. In simple terms from an extremely minor enthusiast their weight directly impacts control. But there’s a reason media likes to portray things a certain way. Big ol’ showy telegraphed motions convey emotion to a general audience in a way that doesn’t require any prior knowledge to appreciate. Tastes for it will vary. Sorry!

Santa Grinch Hugging HumBaba and two Fairies

Release the Portman ✂️!! I used to have a DVD rip of a Lazerdisc for Star Wars but my brother sent it to a comedian who plays Lucas in a podcast because he destorys any versions of starwars that arent the special editions because he must leave only the director's cut

Totally Offside

"Coku" did not get the recognition it deserved.

Grrafe

Emily Axeford, the comedic genius you are (yes I know he's been pulled from the book but the commiment to something so stupid is so funny). Fourty year old man named Cinnamon, son of a 90 year old man (I've decided for my own enjoyment his name is Nutmeg) who's been accused(?) of corruption, deciding the best course of action is to become a wizard... but no one wants a dude who's mid-life crisis consists of trying to save his, again, 90 year old dad's name from the title of "corruption". Also probably because he's getting old. I'm so excited for the Pathfinder 2e two-shot. I've just started looking into it this week because of the ep you dropped a while ago, and man it looks fun. Seriously excited to see what Caldwell does for it!!

Impish

emily is correct and in fact has never been wrong about anything, ever

Shane Kelly

I've been saying for years pod racing is the best part of the phantom menace. Give me pod racing fast and furious

Omar Mtz

6 PLANTES ARE ALIGNING ON JUNE 3rd!!!!!

casey eats pizza

I follow an artist who used to work with Caldwell and they posted a video of him playing Bloodborne. I was surprised to see Caldwell, didn't know I was in the no Murphs club

tommy

Podracing scene is so good! Incredible sound mixing and pacing, I’m with Emily

Alex H.

Reading the wizard's backstory, the best part is that it turns out his dad actually is corrupt and he did this for nothing

Ravit Pearlman

Emily has got to watch the mandalorian non lightsaber weapons and the dark saber has so much heft

Shan

Murph, the world needs your edgelord elf

mandy

I don't remember the movies very much but I do THOROUGHLY remember the pod racing scene on the lego star wars game so that must mean it was fantastic

Canid Duality

Just like the 40 year old wizard who no one take as an apprentice, Jedi won't take an apprentice over the age of 13. I think star wars is better in order of release vs chronological, but you do you Emily. Again excited for pathfinder 2e and maybe Tales of the Valiant (Kobold Press) in the future.

Alex Willging

It's not "correct," but Emily liking the Podracing over the Darth Maul fight in Phantom Menace fits her personality so well it's eerie.

Gavin Pountney

Completely off topic, just saw a trailer for “The Mean One” which is a Grinch horror knock off where the grinch murdered Cindy Who’s parents and now the Grinch is BACK!!! If Murph hasn’t heard of this movie, he sure does need to

Nick_Nack_Patty_Whack

What are all of your thoughts on the Darth Jar Jar theory? When is the podcast about pod racing coming out? It can be called the Pod Pod.

Bea Munro

Emily, if you happen to see this, there's a mid 2000s french cartoon called Oban Star Racers which is basically an entire show of pod racing and it completely kicks ass.

Sarah Sullivan

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA for not a take, I love Emily’s take on lightsabers I’m sobbing laughing

Spencer

Emily is absolutely right about the light saber fights in the prequels. They feel way too choreographed. Say what you will about the sequels, but at least those fights felt like they had some weight to them. They were much more scrappy, which seems to be what she likes.

xatlern

I think Emily's take about the lightsabers is more valid than she gets credit for here...I vaguely remember seeing some BTS stuff that for the fight choreography in the original trilogy they were told to act like the lightsabers had more weight than they really did, but then in the prequel trilogy they were told to act like the lightsabers didn't weigh anything at all and a lot of people thought it looked stupid, so for the sequel trilogy they went back to making them seem heavy.

Mr. Dude Sky

I’ve given up on star wars, but I agree with everything Emily said. Give us a podracing movie!

Jeffrey Steck, Lord of the Fjord

I thought the pod race was pretty cool and fun. Not my take and maybe I’m misremembering but I thought back in the day that some people scoffed at the believability of a 9 year old owning everyone at pod racing. Like it’s not a fantasy movie about an extraordinary person.

Caleb Horton

MAJOR thorn for the Mothership employees not instantly deactivating at the end, just like the droid army in the Phantom Menace

Spencer

To add, George Lucas’s fight scenes are a lot like his dialogue: it’s poetic and theatrical (though often campy), but very unrealistic. In the same way nobody talks like that, you could say nobody fights like that.

The Wizard Syndicate

I can see Emily’s point of view even if I personally disagree. She may like Rogue One though if she likes that grittier feel to an action movie.

The Wizard Syndicate

I disagree with her thoughts on lightsabers. She is right about the pod racing. It’s dope and anyone who says different is lying.

Axel Ottel

My hot take is that the Prequels just have too many lightsaber fights. Maul fight is great, but the novelty is quickly lost after. And they should never have had Yoda fight.

Eagledink

Omg another person that remembers Oban star racers.

Evan Cordero

I really thought Emilys hot take was gonna be that sheesa loved Jar Jar Binks. Just liking pod racing is ok. I like the pod racing and apparently the video game was great. However, not liking light sabers is just plain incorrect. Swords that slice you in half cuz it's that hot is awesome. And they make cool whirring sounds and light up.

Voiceofkane

Emily's TPM takes are totally valid. She's 100% correct that prequel lightsabers are way too light. The lightsabers of the originals and sequels have heft to them; they require intention to swing. Also, the podrace is better than the Duel of the Fates. Fight me (but only with a heavy lightsaber).

Emmie

I can’t believe you didn’t tag this for Star Wars Episode One spoilers

Katie P.

In Emily's defense, in the originals, George Lucas said Lightsabers weighed 20 lbs

Jaxicle

Off topic- nothing to do with the ep, EXCEPT frog ✨magic ✨ Imma need y'all to play Frog Fractions. Best game to ever sweep the Nation.

Olivia

emily is going to be a prequels lover… I can feel it in my bones and I love it so much

Zach J

I liked Emily's fresh take on ep 1. Totally valid and glad she shared. I wish people didn't take it so seriously that others feel like they have to defend their opinions 🫤

Clemming

So excited to see you guys playing Pathfinder! Cinnamon sounds hilarious 😂

Tori the Tungsten Dragoose, Dr. Dog's assistant

Speaking of animals with Buster Swords, look up Dinoblade on YouTube. It's a souls-like in the works where you play as a dinosaur, holding weapons in your mouth. The animations are just... *Chef's kiss*

Aidan Boyle

Emily is completely right about the Darth Maul fight, I (one of Murph's haters) am snacking

Unbaked

HUUUGE BUD FOR CINNAMON

Courtney F.

35, same experience with Star Wars as Murph/Caldwell described, I kinda agree with Emily about the pod racing... But certainly not that sword nonsense.

Lia

I agree with Emily. I don't know how much it's the weight of the weapons and more of the choreography doesn't feel as detrimental. Those sfx for the pod racing scenes just hit different, their audio design did phenomenally.

Kayla Hamill

Thoughts on title for next arc: Final Fey'ntasy

Evil Grimace

I honestly would love a Mixed Bag of all of you talking about Star Wars or Murph and Caldwell playing Bloodborne and/or Elden Ring together.

Gafyn John

There's an app that'll alert you when your chance of seeing the Northern Lights is high. Its called Aurora

ChungleDownBingus

I can’t believe ‘Coke-u’ just slipped by like that

Samuel Gray

“I didn’t like the lightsabers but I loved the pod racing” is so quintessentially Emily. Add it to the “best of emily axford” compilation

Natural Dragon

After hearing Emily’s take on lightsabers I get why Murph has forbid Emily from wearing bucket hats. She doesn’t deserve them

Takowowo

Every time I hear a little bit more of Emily's take the more I want to trepidatiously recommend 2004s Garo

austinoxner

This is an official invite to the He-Man Murphy Haters Club. No Murphs Allowed. Tagline: We Be Snackin.

Chris Dhanaraj

As a life long Star Wars fan, Emily is 100% correct on podracing - easily the best thing in the movie. Also the podracing N64 game was such a blast, I'm stunned Murph hadn't played it!

Kai

The pod race is the best part of Ep 1. Spent hours as a kid playing the n64 podracer game too!

Fearne Pérez

Em and I had the same response to these movies. I just need y’all to know she’s not alone. And I mean that about everything she said. My older brother was more horrified than murph though I gotta say. Swords > lightsabers, pod racing was my favorite part by faaar

Bills Mcblow

Em NEEDS to watch Redline as soon as humanly possible

Grass

In no way shape or form could I have predicted Emily’s lightsaber take and I have not stopped cackling

Maz719

Opposite option of Emily's, any good sword scene can be made better with lightsabers. Examples Pirates of the caribbean with lightsabers

MeekoCHAOS The Raccoon Boi

Emily is right the lightsaber fights are too choreographed and the laser swords have no weight to them. emily would probably enjoy the vader luke battle in return of the jedi way more.

Casey Alexander

Emily I have to say if you loved the pod racing I have the book for you. You have to read Hover Car Racer  by Matthew Reilly. Like it’s everything you want out of the book

Austin Wiggin

Was there opinions in the early 00's that the pod racing was trash? I always thought it was a highlight of the movie

Caye Carmack

First episode of the short rest. 21 year old man who grew up loving the prequels. Might have to unsub😂😂 jk

Jordan Bergner

Keep reading the titles as "pendergreens" and keep getting excited :(

Jonathan H Brennan

Thank you Murph for reminding Caldwell about Bloodborne /s

Scott Pateros

So Emily’s Pathfinder character is just Donald Trump Jr?

k.allen

As someone who got scared of Star Wars as a kid and has now gone back and watched it as an adult but without getting myself too deep into lore before hand. I have the nostalgia of the original trilogy, those my family had on VHS and I did love them, and love R2-D2 and all that, just something scared me and I stopped watching the movies for awhile. All that to say, when I went back and watched the prequals, my biggest reaction was telling the guy I was watching them with that I felt I related the most to JarJar, and he informed me that JarJar was the meme character and I learned a lot about myself in that moment lol

lily 😦

swords are much cooler than lightsabers and only one person has been brave enough to say it 🙏🙏

frogwithhumanhands

i've never seen star wars but if anyone criticizes emily i'll physically fight you

Bat-Fran

I'm 2 years younger than y'all. When I saw episode 1, that pod racing scene was ev.er.y.thing~ I'm not sure I'd seen the original trilogy much at this point, definitely not at the cinema, so this was my first real Star wars experience...

Doleth

The Pathfinder Iconic Wizard is even better that what Emily saw. Dude was the shitty middle child of some rich merchant. While.he was a young adult, his father got accused of heresy, but the church couldn't get the charges to stick. The family reputation was in the gutter still, so Ezren/Cinnamon spent decades trying to decisively prove his father innocence. Instead, he discovered that is dad was 100% an heretic and guilty. So at this point, this 42 years old man went "Screw that, I'm an adventurer now." But he's not strong or quick enough for most class, so he goes "Guess I'll be a wizard now" since trying to clear his dad's name made him.a huge nerd and he leaves his hometown to go to wizard school, but he's too old and no one wants to teach him. So now he's your classic big white beard wizened wizard in his 50s, but he's fully a novice and 100% going through midlife crisis because he feels.as if he wasted his adulthood on his shitty heretic dad.

Katlyn Mcgauley

I think Emily would really like the movie Redline, it’s just pod racing and aliens.

everett harbaugh

i really had no idea people didn’t like the podracing scene! that was my favorite part of the movie growing up, and the local arcade had a podracing game you could play

JB

Thank GOD Murph got one “now this is podracing” in. I was on the edge of my seat the whole episode.

DadJokesAreLife

Emily, check out the app 'Aurora'. It let's you set up alerts on your phone to know if there's a chance of seeing the Northern Lights at your location!

The_Protease_Inhibitor

I am SO excited for the pathfinder 2e two (?) shot! Emily’s excitement for Ezren is such a good sign. PF2e is probably my favorite modern fantasy ttrpg system, and getting to see the cast (esp Emily) dig into it is really exciting

Gilbot 3000

Thought about it, and Coke-ku is objectively better than Go-coke.

Libbi Longworth

I am so so stoked for the PF2E episodes, Emily's info about pathfinder inspired me to to GM my first campaign using pathfinder instead of dnd 5e and I'm so excited to hear them play it!!

Psykodactyle

I think Em would love the Darth Vader vs Obi Wan fight

Iain Broadfoot

my (probably flawed) memory is that originally the lightsabers were supposed to be slow, heavy weapons, so preferring one style over another is totally valid!

Lockwood Warlock

I could be so wrong but I could have sworn I read somewhere that like- the lightsabers were suppose to like be equivalent to Katanas and Jedi were more like samurai??

Robert

I listened to this after I’d heard the Pathfinder eps - hilarious that Murph suggested his character was going to be a hyper-serious elven warrior when he ended up as Crudbert.

Meg Shallanberger

I will take models and real places over cgi any day.

PWJ

#ImWithEmily the pod racing scene is better than the fight at the end.

Max Herzog

Now this is pod racing

Max Herzog

I enjoyed the prequels enough BECAUSE they featured more lightsaber fight. The story, eh, but the action was great

GintokiShids

Gotta come over here to give credit to Brian Murphy for getting me into Bloodborne even after my friend tried to! I’m now playing Elden Ring and loving it

Ricky King

I grew up in the aughts with the prequel trilogy and when I was a senior in high school I rewatched the Phantom Menace and wrote my elective English essay about racial stereotypes, minstrelsy, and Star Wars

Ricky King

It’s like George Lucas heard someone go “fantasy and sci fi species carry a lot of racist elements” and said “hold my beer”

Ricky King

My dad was like “just so you know this is a caricature of us.” and I think even had me look up what minstrels looked and talked like so I’d get what he was saying about Jar Jar

Ricky King

I love Star Wars but it’s pretty much impossible for me to talk at length about the prequels without mentioning how goddamn racist they are. I’m a little surprised it didn’t come up here

NOBLIVION

Ep1 came out the year I was born, the first StarWars movie I ever watched in theaters was Attack of the Clones. The prequels hold a cherished place in my heart

Kelly Kuwitzky

My characters name is cinnamon ironically too 😂

Drew

oh my god someone make emily watch the starkid musical ANI. truly for the podracing fan

Max

I’m in my late thirties, grew up on star trek and star wars, and I also loved the pod racing scene

Ian Mcilwean

I grew up with the prequels loved them. Rewatched them in my early 20s when the new movies were about to come out. I hated them on rewatch I don't think I liked a anything about them. Kinda ruined starwars for me.

Ian Mcilwean

As an adult that's the only Star Wars movie I've enjoyed

Drew Faber

The combination of mounted combatant + defensive flourish is SO fuckin dope I love callie’s build so much

SolemnSeagull

The other hilarious thing is that JarJar was originally supposed to be the actual "phantom menace," but the general dislike of him as a character made G.L. pivot and create Count Dooku to be the Sith Lord instead. But I will always wonder how "Count Binks" could have been.

Michael Graham Abernathy

I really don't think I've ever heard anyone say the podracing scene was bad. I kinda thought the general consensus was always that the podracing scene and the Darth Maul fight were the only 2 awesome parts.

Venus Astria

Oh to be in sync with another person like Murphy and Em at 37:07
