I absolutely feel Murphs energy in this I would be so hot if my “friends” did something like that so disrespectful and mean that poor dm! Especially because Ive run casino encounters and they are so much work you need to make a bunch of custom rules for the games AND make the environment vivid and fun. Casino DM if you’re reading this leave those players and find some new people; it’s not worth the stress of dming for people who don’t want to play your game. I have dmd for people like that; and I quit because it was terrible. now I have a wonderful group who actually want to play the game I spend like 7 hours a week setting up.

I feel like the casino one depends on a bunch of stuff. If they play super often then maybe they just didn’t really feel like playing through a session that time and would rather have chat and hung out with their friends. I’ve had a session go similarly once, and people were just overwhelmed with their actual life and sometimes you don’t realise how draining role playing will be til you’re at the table doing it.

Alright so for my dad's case (Ride and Die) a few things: 1. They lived in northern Pennsylvania so it honestly probably was snowing 2. I've asked my dad about the character before and he just kind of shuts it down and doesn't even want to try, but next time I'm home to visit I'll try again! 3. Listen I only asked for the light punishment for my dad bc he's being very stubborn and refusing to play because of something that happened 40 years ago, but still understandable on his end so I rescind my request for light punishment and apologize to the court 4. NYE is my dad's birthday and he usually has a gig to play (jazz musician) so Xmas Eve is actually perfect I think 5. My "uncle" has been my dad's bestie for most of their lives but I've always been kinda frustrated by him tbh so phenomenal idea for my "uncle" to be the bbeg actually... Anywhoozle thank you for your ruling, benevolent court and ballif! Appreciate y'all so much ❤️

Love the clarifying facts! Please update! As an old person, it is totally possible that your dad doesn't remember a single thing about that character though. Things have changed so much since the '80's and he might be more enthusiastic about some of the newer additions!

I do have a small update! He was very excited for me that the case was read (my mom said he was "puffy with pride") and couldn't wait to tell my "uncle" lol And you're right! He remembers that he was playing a fighter of some kind I think but stopped talking about it when I tried to explain that this edition made it harder to die and that there were more options, etc., but again I think he was a little embarrassed 😅

The abandoned friend story reminds me of how I ended up finding my current D&D crew. I was just signing up for games with people on roll20, and ended up in a game with 5 other players and a bad dm that ended after a tpk. Then one of the players who left right after the game invited me to a new game with a whole different crew. Then they left that game after 5 session and invited me to a new game also with entirely new people. Then the exact same thing happened a third time and I haven’t heard back from them since then. Anyways I still play with both of the crews he left, though the third group has been on hiatus since the DM moved across the country.

For my previous year-long monthly campaign I did successfully make and use a build for "bounding" as a character from pop-culture! Our DM was using elements of The Witchlight Carnival, so I created a bard based on the muppet Mokey from Fraggle Rock. She experiences a loss of innate skill in that show similarly to the description provided in our module, which helped me round out my character by pulling details from their lore. Then I had lots of space to improvise against a familiar framework, within an fun new unfamiliar setting♡~ I made a playlist as well to help settle into it and direct my focus toward details I'd like to either exaggerate or soften. The tone of my approach was perhaps not the same as Mario Pizza though lol 🤣. It can totally work, but you need to be matching the energy of the setting/module and your group at least to begin with. 💞

Re: blackjack and how much work GMing is: Often when someone is thinking about buying a boat, an experienced sailor will tell them that they will have to do ten hours of maintenance for every hour of sailing, and if the buyer isn't put off by that, maybe boat ownership won't be a disaster for them. I don't think GMing is quite at that ratio, but maybe 4:1? 16 hours for of prep for a 4 hour session?

I actually had something like the abandoning friend thing happen to me with a former housemate - it sucked, and I don't see that guy much anymore, but I still had an okay time with the group. The difference (and something that might be relevant here) was that it was a paid DND thing, and he was having money trouble, and the group could only run with a minimum player buy-in per session. So it was shitty, but he might have decided that the only way to quit without screwing over everyone else was to loop in a friend.

1) Before I started playing in earnest, I only ever played NPCs in other people's games. I'd ask my DM if they had a goal the NPC wanted to achieve and how much they'd give to achieve it.

I gotta say, I'm 100% on the players' side in the casino. Sometimes you find out you just want to play cards all night! The prep isn't gone it's there for next session. The only thing better than having a fun activity you planned is finding out the activity is cancelled, and you get to stay home.

Uh, yeah. It's been interesting. I didn't tell my friend about this episode or the question I asked, but I did ask him what he was thinking and Murph's generous(?) read was pretty accurate. Friend has Beef with one specific player and didn't want to fill me in on said beef in advance for fear that it would color my perception of the group before I started playing with them. Which was odd, but not as bad as it could have been. I spoke to the DM about my issues, specifically the stuff mentioned in this, but also a bit of other issues and he helped me get situated with the group. I didn't mention it in the submission since I was limited on time/space and it wasn't directly related to the question at hand, but I'm very deaf/HoH which made it even harder for me to speak up during the game since the rest of the group was used to each others dynamic and I was typically running on a few seconds delay while I tried to process what I heard. This, coupled with my extreme anxiety, made it tough for me to speak up during sessions, and when I did finally process what was said, I didn't want to interrupt others especially if they had already moved onto the next topic. As a workaround, the DM let me take the telepath feat. To explain why only one or two of the other characters could hear my character when he spoke. (It was too hard for me to speak while others were talking so I'd just text the group chat, and there was one guy who kept tabs on the group chat and sort of signal to the rest when I said something and either interpret for me or tell everyone else to chill for a second I could voice my thoughts to the group.) Since then, I've gotten new ears installed (which I had Naddpod to thank in a strange, roundabout way). The combination of being able to hear (not 100% by a long shot but much better than before) and being more comfortable in the group, so I've been able to speak up more and be more present in the conversations lately, and it's been a lot of fun. I actually recently played this clip for a few of the guys in the DND group because I had gotten to know them a lot better and my friend's beef with one of the other players finally came to light. Apparently he didn't tell them that he super quit. He told the DM, but to the rest of the group he just said that he was busy with work. Until this point, I didn't actually know who he was fueding with (although I had my suspicions).

He was going to also write a response for this and was super excited that they read the case but idk if he ever wrote it so maybe I'll follow up on that too lol
