Haven’t listened to the ep yet but someone on tumblr made the joke that only people named Jennifer should be allowed to name their children after themselves. That’s way they are “NextJen” and I immediately thought of Jens-Z. Can’t wait to listen!

No bro 😭 it’s been a consistent issue ever since Brennan taught them the wrong rule in C1, but it got really bad in C3 and was constant this episode especially from Emily It’s flagrantly against the rules. Like sorry to be a lawyer but they literally have a show called dungeon court so I don’t feel that bad

Valid. Just sad seeing the show shift away from being rules driven. Occasional rule of cool like in C1 is fine, but at this point I think the amount of money NADDPOD brings in is making them more afraid to leave major plot elements up to chance. Permanent character death is off the table, for example, because of fan outcry. Starting to feel more like an improv show than an actual-play

I'm confused about what the rules issue is? "You can lend your aid to another creature in the completion of a task. When you take the Help action, the creature you aid gains advantage on the next ability check it makes to perform the task you are helping with, provided that it makes the check before the start of your next turn." Is the 5e rule I moved away from D&D, is it different in the new edition? Because this seems like how they use it. While it's true this is in the combat section I think most people agree you can still do combat stuff outside of initiative - you wouldnt make someone roll initiative to cut a rope with an attack for example. I actually agree I don't like the way the Help action works but that's more of a system issue

It’s been really interesting listening to this adventure because I am three years into a Strahd campaign (as a PC), so I see where things have been streamlined or changed and I think Caldwell is doing a great job of tightening things up for an audio medium. He mentioned this in one of the short rests, but it would have been cool if they’d done Death House as well just because that is a CRAZY intro to Barovia, lol. But it doesn’t really have a lot to do with the main plot, so I can see why he skipped it. Mild vague spoiler for Strahd: I was very pumped as the ep wrapped up and Regan (?) walked in, because I knew instantly that he must be Rahadin. (My nemesis, lol—I play a half-elf evocation wizard who discovered that her father is a dusk elf, so she has major beef with Rahadin over something he did to his people at Strahd’s bidding. Can’t wait to curbstomp his ass when we get to the endgame… we’re about to hit 13th level and I’ve got a delayed blast fireball with his name on it. 😂)

They aren’t. It’s a known pain point with 5e that the help action, like Guidance, is basically free outside of initiative and super powerful because advantage is so good. A lot of DM’s put reasonable restrictions on the help action, but rules as written you don’t even have to justify how you could reasonably help, so the crew is doing more than the rules demand by weaving it into narrations. As another commenter said, this is a system issue, not an issue with the players. Edit: it looks like they updated it in 2024 so that you can only help on checks that you are proficient in at least, which was a common house rule: “Assist an Ability Check. Choose one of your skill or tool proficiencies and one ally who is near enough for you to assist verbally or physically when they make an ability check. That ally has Advantage on the next ability check they make with the chosen skill or tool. This benefit expires if the ally doesn’t use it before the start of your next turn. The DM has final say on whether your assistance is possible.” I don’t really begrudge them continuing to use the 2014 version that they’ve been using for years though.
