On the question of the advantage of height I do wanna say that I fenced semi-seriously in hs and height was not neccesarily considered a good thing. Yes having long legs was helpful but having a long torso was explicitly not. As a general rule, The best fencers I knew were short, slim and fast as fuck. HOWEVER, that was not universally true, the type of fencing matters, and perhaps most importantly of all: Fencing is not jousting lol

It's funny cuz I've literally read the jousting scene in The Bright Sword a couple of days ago! The objective was to knock the other knight off their horse, or at least breaking the lance on their shield or body. Collum mentions that you should look at the opponent's shield but it's more so you wouldn't flinch from their lance's approaching tip. You also had to present your body as a target so you couldn't turn away from the impact. Apparently in the late middle ages (~1300+ CE) chivalry's rules and etiquette made knights frequently deny themselves any advantage so they could win from a losing position. So yeah, they loved an underdog back then, too :)

Most of the stuff he cares about is political action. things like employing people with criminal records, fighting racial disparity/injustice or increasing voting access. He's wife's biggest concern (understandably) is global warming. So...idk if y'all can figure out a way to mesh with that?

I cant bring myself to watch it. It was being written and produced by my favorite screen writer Steven Conrad and before they could get it over the finish line HBO took it, ground it up, and released it as hog feed under a different name. Check out the Amazon series Patriot to support my boy

I've been avoiding watching this show because of how GoT ended and how bad I thought season two of House of the Dragon was. Hearing the 2crew talk about it has sold me on giving it a chance. I know its better for content if they watch stuff that is objectively bad and they really dont like and Murph plays the grump but its also really nice to hear them gush about something they actually enjoyed.

As a 6’4” person, it was a little infuriating hearing you half-pints shortsplain tallness The portrayal of Ser Dunc resonated strongly with me, as someone who has absolutely been the tall, quiet, awkward slouching guy that keeps attracting weirdos for some reason Also without a doubt, tall people probably get challenged more. I understand why you would think otherwise, but every man with a big ego and a small penis sees a tall guy as a challenge

I love the review mixed bags. I started reading Bright Sword because of this podcast and also thought of Collum when I saw Duncan. I do think they would be buddies. I was kind of burnt out on fantasy TV shows after GOT and Witcher. I wasn't interested in watching this show until I saw clips of the dance scene online

Fun fact! Oftentimes, prizes for winning jousts could include getting ownership of the losing knight's armor or horse, so that was a strong incentive to NOT cause any harm to the animal, since they were incredibly valuable assets that could become yours

Storytime about Jousting: I worked the beer tent at one of the Scottish Games in Mississippi many years ago. One of those year they had some of the people from full metal jousting. ( A TV show jousting competition ). I thought it was going to be for show until I heard the first two people hit. It sounded like a car crash. Full speed. Wood splintering on steel. These people were wild. I saw two people breaking arm and one person get a lance lodged in their neck. ( Thankfully it was caught by their armor, but only barely. ) The winner of a competition was a lovely blonde haired woman.
