Snow Crash! Great book. (very minor spoilers ahead) Not only does it have skitching and linguistics (neuro-linguistic hacking), there are also cyborg dogs that can break the sound barrier, VR swordfights as imagined in 1992, and all kinds of other fun stuff. It's also a great read as a commentary on capitalism, consumerism, digital frontiers, and all that good cyberpunk stuff if you have an interest in that. One other fun concept is 'gargoyles' which are people so decked out in over-the-top cybernetics and tech add-ons that they look utterly ridiculous to the average person. There are some less than comfortable scenes and portrayals of people from other cultures, but I think overall its a solid cyberpunk book with a lot more depth than the cold-open might make you think.

Idk if Emily will ever read this but that ranger was right: be careful with wild deer! They aren't very expressive, and it is easy to think that it's being playfully timid, when in reality it is trying to get you to move away from an area. A well-placed kick from a deer can break bones, and absolutely slash you to ribbons

You guys are right about the deer- it’s too bad but yes, some species are spreading out of their normal ranges and it causes problems like you said. The expansion and overpopulation of deer (such as white-tailed deer) can cause over-grazing on fragile ecosystems. There’s also a problem with chronic wasting disease spreading through cervids in the US and Canada (which is a threat to Canada’s more at risk caribou etc.). Unfortunately the spread of deer is symptomatic of local extinctions of top predators like bears and wolves. Basically we’ve fucked everything

When rollerblade happenned in the early 90s, we made a tow rope and had a friend ride a bike and tow us around. Then we convinced dad to do it with the shitty S-10 truck we used to haul firewood. Yup! Half the fun of registering to some of their old short rests is seeing seeds of topics being brought up and other people being referenced from other shows and seeing the thread that was later woven into another idea in the show or in another show. On a note about deer being a problem, deer overpopulation can specifically destroy forests and diversity. This has been an ongoing battle in the Midwest Michigan and Indiana forest are constantly overgrazed and lack diversity because of it. Collisions are definitely a major problem too, but the ecological damage is hard to recover from even with hunting incentives and replant initiatives

Had a couple buddies who tried skitching when they got their first skateboards at 15. One of them got their arm stuck and ended up being drsgged behind the car. They had some gnarly road rash and broke their arm. I also recommend a book called chain gang all stars. It is about prisoners fighting in a televised show to try to commune or pardon their sentences. Lots of commentary on real life but it’s a really interesting story

Okay, I know what you mean about the pee when someone dies! My dog passed away in February and the week before he passed he pooped in our yard during a snowstorm but I had run out of bags. I went out later to pick it up but it froze to the ground and I couldn’t get it off the ice (he was a small wonderful boy). Deer are unfortunately a pretty big burden on the native ecosystems where I’m from. Native vegetation starts to decline when 8+ deer are present in a square mile and in some places there can hundreds. Deer eat up everything they can possibly digest and leave behind a few invasive plant species completely destroying any understory habitat for other species and stunting forest growth. Without food in the forests they move into agricultural and urban areas which leads to deer-vehicle collisions. Deer ruining flowerbeds is generally not the biggest concern of overpopulation but would decline if population numbers were more stable.

Jake’s character reminds me of Ghost Wolves. They are coyote wolf hybrids, the only living species having red wolf DNA, in Galveston Texas. They are extremely rare and a location of a large pack is being destroyed to put in a Margaritaville. It’s stings more cause there’s another one just a few miles away.
