My favorite part about waiting for the Short Rest to drop is seeing what kind of insane/random thumbnail they choose. Tree of Life looks so cool btw

wick

What are we even going to get into this ep

LowlyWorm

only my favorite podcast could ever have a section of a post dedicated to Trees Mentioned In This Episode

Grass

Ohhhhh we are so lucky to get it this quickly!!!!

evan aka the super cockler

EPIC RAP BATTLES OF HISTORY. METHUSELAH…. versus… ALERCE MILENARIOOOOOOOOO! BEGIN

Matthew Williams

Am I the only one who ran out of books and did read the dictionary?

Lamp

rewatched an earlier short rest where the crew discussed their rock collecting habits... i have suggestions; 1) rocks can go atop the dirt in potted plants and help retain the moisture and 2) in Denmark, rocks with natural holes are considered good luck, so people collect and put them on good luck strings in the house or hanging from trees

Sarah Love

Big fan of Skaldova short rests giving us new game shows that are "kind of sweeping the nation". Honestly would listen to a whole episode of trying to guess words

2026-10-16 18:00 Funnily enough part of the conceit of lord of the rings is that it is a transitional/ localization from westron (like an 80’s anime dub). So peoples names aren’t actually there names. For example Bilbo’s real name is Bilba Labingi. So that’s why theirs mondernish feeling names like Ben and tom in the text.

DorkRoll

Shout out to Jōmon Sugi, a 5,000+ year old 83 ft. tall cedar on the island of Yakushima in southern Japan

Harry

I'd like to hear the 2 crew's option on whether the Upside Down Tree at Kenyon College evokes a sense of hidden god-hood. Also, I must disagree with you Murph. Methuselah is incredible looking. Nothing like a proper gnarl to ignite your imagination.

Giovi Thomas

Love how off the rails they get and the conversation about trees. I was really hoping they would get into yew trees, i live near one of the oldest yew forests in europe and they have such a otherworldly vibe to them.

Boon

Having seen this thumbnail i get where murph is coming from

Wilder Cosaboom-Son

An all timer short rest, custom thumbnail, new game show, Murph apologizing for something, and no talk about the episode whatsoever

rosebramblewolf

Female hobbit names are gems or flowers. Emily could be the name of one of the human women in Bree though.

Brian Edwards

Absolutely getting roasted in this ep. :(

Munzy

Between his apparent affinity for cigars, his good-natured hedonism, and association with the bog, I wonder if Boggy Roger is a transdimensional avatar of Crangar, or merely an exemplar of Crangarian virtues.

Frank The Fickle Leaf Fig

Watch out When Did It Come out it looks like you have some new competition for best podcast game

2026-10-18 14:00 Brian Boru was the only ancient Irish king to come close to unifying the Island. He conquered all but I think like 2 or 3 of the counties. But his empire didnt really last after his death. After him no one was able to get as close to unifying Ireland until the Norman invasion of Ireland. Which then began an 800 year streak of occupation and Oppresion by the English.

Colton Merrifield

Gotta read the chronicles of Prydain, it’s like 400 pages from first book to 5th, also really good

Jasem Shawwa

guess the word was good radio

Colton Merrifield

I went to a tree with the name of the Tree of Life in Doha, Qatar on a tour of culture and landmarks, and the feeling towards this tree amongst the locals was neutral AT BEST. The dude that was giving the tour looked at us like we were the weirdest Americans for being excited to see a tree

SurvingLaw

Word of the day was funny

CommodoreBlue

How many people read Lord of the Rings in high school? I don’t think my school had any copies, and no one in my classes ever mentioned the series. I vaguely knew of it from movie trailers, but didn’t really learn about LotR until I was an adult and followed a few nerdy fandoms

George

Hopping in on the topic of mosquito repellant! If you take vitamin E supplements daily for a few weeks you start producing a pheromone that naturally deters mosquitos from biting. No cigars necessary.

Hugo Wull

I first read them in middle school, and we did Hobbit as part of our 9th grade curriculum in 2006-ish (though my siblings did it also going back to the 90s). Somehow my parents had a paperback box set even though I’m certain they never read them until my brother got everyone hooked on the movies.

biblioprincess, the executive dysfunction fairy

I was in junior high. I saw the first movie in theaters, went home, stole my brother's one volume edition, and read the whole thing in one go. Oh the halcyon days of reading for 10 hours straight...

Davis

House would have sent her to illegally break into someone’s apartment before commenting on her legs

Jarred Williams

Haha omg. One of my favorite parts of the Short Rest is discovering how the Thumbnail connects to whatever the fuck yall are talking about in the short rest.

uudd

When did words come out was a great addition to the podcast

mothma’am

Okay unironically I would love some word guessing mini pods, had me with my scratch paper trying to figure it out first. There has to be a big overlap between D&D and word nerds

Jae Beezy

I don't think it should it's own show, but I do think it should be a bonus round in "When Did This Come Out"

Walker Thurman

Caldwell just making new mythology around the methuselah tree now

Cohen Scoggins

Present-day names (like Bill or Emily) fit in the early sections of the Hobbit and the LOTR because Tolkien made the Shire seem more like England in the 50s so that readers would start off the book In a familiar setting and work there way into the unfamiliar as it progressed.

Mike Y

If you too hate stupid word things, you're really going to hate the book P is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever, by Lushlife

Allison H

If yall want to see a cool tree, i recommend the dragon blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari)

Brant

Absolutely riveted during the word guessing game.

Nicole Jordan

The Children of Gods and Fighting Men is a great fantasy book that features Brian Boru that I think could be up people’s alley!

Mila Janus

Huge fan of Emily rage baiting her husband

Hugo Wull

I’m brand loyal to Spell Check but this one was pretty good!

Tyler Whorff

BILBA LABINGI?? that's so funny

xatlern

If you liked that word guessing game, you might like semantle wordchase. It's a daily game like worldle but t gives you clues based on the meaning of the word. Some of the games are user generated and it's infuriating but still fun.

SLuz

I demand an Abs-word-ity mixed bag

Zane Fountain

Was honestly super invested in Guess the Word: The gameshow that is moderately sweeping the nation

diintz

locking in my word guess before i hear it: different edit: FUCK, also i would absolutely listen to a whole episode of guessing words and actually this is 100% a new carride game LOL

cookies crumbles

the way i was playing along with trying to guess the word and i was SO fucking excited when i found out that my guess was right. honestly riveting. i'm obsessed

Elizabeth Gunn, sickly but cruel

I've definitely been drunk in the tree of life. I'm trying to remember if that's where you can see into the zoo and see the giraffes or if that's a different tree. Ooh, also, there's the singing tree in City Park which is full of enormous windchimes, which is good if you're really really depressed.

Joshua cox

@cadwell mistborn series! Same universe as storm light archives. Mistborn era 2 is great! Super powered cowboys yee haw

Richa W

absolutely read the dictionary for pleasure as a kid

macbeth

Omg never has there been a better time to recommend Susie Dent's books on words!! She's such an insightful author and her books are all wonderful - "An Emotional Dictionary" is my fav 💛 alternatively, "The Cabinet of Linguistic Curiosities" by Paul Anthony Jones is such a delight - happy reading!!

ananarama

Emily if you liked high potential, you might like Psych. I think some of the same people were involved in making both shows

Miriam_Why

As a fellow dictionary reader (I have a masters in linguistics now!) I’m a big fan of the new guessing game!

Glenn D AKA Mcdoogins

Jake is really good at turning their shenanigans into moments of deep reflection.

A Miyako M Illustrations

Real ancient god energy type tree: Ipponsugi Cedar at Iwao Pond in Shiga Prefecture. It’s been on my “to visit” wishlist since 2020

SkyBis0n

Resident Avatar the last airbender fan, boarcupines along with many other animal mishmashes feature in ATLA as a staple of its worldbuilding, buzzard wasps and catfishgators also feel very in the fantasy of skaldova as well!

Loveless

The gang needs to play Semantle. It's pretty much just guessing the word of the day.

David Giles

Dude, I must have a weird mind link going on with the gang, because I am also rereading LoTR and also had last read it in high school. Damn I did not appreciate how good a writer and insightful Tolkien was at the time at all LOL

Sean Boyle

Correction. I said he was the only King ti come close. Thats worded wrong. He was the King to come closest but I di think there were one or two others who unified over half the island. I think the O'Neil clan that was in power before Brian Boru's rise held a majority of the Ireland just not a vast majority.

Clairodactyl

(I love your guessing games please don't stop!)

Niamh Casey

I'm guessing the word DIRECT before the big reveal

Gurl Luigi

Murph is such a hater of course he would start beef about old ass trees 🤭🤭🤭🤭

Professor Pratt

Interesting fact. Brian Boru was known for his catchphrases like “knob”, “bud”, “stop”, “Welly?!”, “LAUNCHH!” and singing to himself “Bat outta hell”. (Pendagreens, Balnor, Clanky, and Pendagreens)

bungle

DO NOT MAKE GUESS THE WORD A FULL EP

Corvo_CB

This episode was recorded on October 7th, 2026 (or December 19th, 2016). I love the easter egg of finding out when episodes are recorded!

Becca_rebaker

44:10 As always I have to point out Murph saying nice things to Emily so earnestly. It always warms my heart 🥰

Jenna

completely unrelated but did yall see that parm charms are real now

Julia Thompson

I need next mixed bag to be tree tourney… tree-ney?

Mickey Mars

Waiting for them to learn about pando

Benjamin Kessel

Sorry gang. You've developed a fan base that will eat up every bs game show you generate. These are a people that listened to you eat apples. Abswordity must return.

Maia Oliver

Gotta defend the old ass trees, the reason Methuselah is so gnarled is because bristlecone pines grow in very harsh conditions and are constantly beaten by wind so they grow funky. Also Prometheus was cut down with permission before they knew it was the oldest tree because the grad student trying to age it couldn’t get a core sample to count the rings and after he realized how old the tree was he felt so badly that he personally lobbied Congress to get the area designated as a national park

Jeff Plourde

Anyone stumble across the account the real bog ghoul on IG it makes the bog seem way more terrifying

Scott Hryciw

What about the Hyperion tree?

Joy 🦆

This ep really had me thinking about Angel Oak in Charleston, South Carolina. It’s only about 500 years old but it’s absolutely massive

A$

Yes huge word nerd over here

A$

I was on the EDGE of my seat with guess the word I would absolutely listen to this, I was guessing too. 😂 Maybe if you guys chose words beforehand that you think the other people would guess (knowing their sensibilities) could be fun too. Or it could be themed. whatever it is, I’m putting in all my eggs.

Kyrulius

New game guys!!

Alec Krance

Murph, what class do you go back to in EverQuest? Also have you check out EverQuest Legends

Ilana Galpert

DEVASTATING that we don't get to know what two books Emily is reading, one of which is really fun

TeamLouie

The wrestler who used to read dictionaries: I’ve read that Brian Pillman did that. However if it was an older wrestler, that sounds almost like something Nick Bockwinkle would do.

Matty H

I've heard putting fake dragonflies in your yard wards off mosquitoes, but I haven't tested it out yet

Nat20Wife

Abswordity would be a great daily double during when do things come out 🤔

Vee

WHAT

spike mccue

The bristlecones are pretty accessible. You can drive up in the white mountains and then it's just a short hike. Hike starts at 9-10k ft tho, so you do feel the hike. I've done it, it's pretty awesome. If you've ever in Bishop during the summer I recommend it.

jaydon

hey i just watched all of over the garden wall. thanks! the ending is so good

Gearoid Cotter

Late to the party, but for the record, Brian Boru was the High King of Ireland in the early 1000’s

Brian Henderson

Loved all the Brian talk and learning about my name 🙏

Cotton Candy Skies

Caldwell, as a person who spent 5 hours fighting Gerson until they finally beat him, then realizing that I missed something earlier in the chapter, I feel your pain

jackrabbit

next mixed bag just guess the word 🙏

Zoop

I regularly read the dictionary as a 10-12yr old and it 100% did expand my vocabulary. I was obsessed with growing my lexicon so that I might lower the rates of being entirely misinterpreted. It honestly did kinda help with that

Emma Beer

27 year old here 🙋‍♀️ no way I’m hanging out with a bunch of 19 year olds

Emma Beer

There is a 19 year old in my DND group, but we all work together and it’s an age range from 19-32

Joe coburn

Brian is an old Irish and Celtic name, it could absolutely be in LOTR

foxyfungi

My favorite old tree, another live oak ~ The Angel Oak - in South Carolina.

foxyfungi

Yes!!! The Angel Oak is incredible.

Colby Greer

Abswordity needs to come bac as a mixed bag
