Okay, so I’m re-listening to this episode and I just wanted to point out when Caldwell and Jake had the quick exchange about the “Hen House” being the name for the bird theater, I couldn’t believe it was so gently disregarded yet such a perfect idea 😂😭

The Grinch (feral)

I fully forgot this ep was the origin of birdlesque, and so now I’m cackling at work and ppl keep looking at me funny 😭😭😭

Jason Sherman

Ugh I quit hockey because I had to change into my gear in the car ride there and got so car sick every time

Jason Sherman

I’m pretty sure there is a comic where Vader starts to kind of care for a trooper or pilot, and respects him. But I think it ends in tragedy and Vader allowing the guy to be sacrificed in a plot or something

Myles Lee

It originated in my case! I have a very tender spot in my heart for birdlesque 😂😂😂

Marco

"For the purpose of these rules, an object is a discrete, inanimate item like a window, door, sword, book, table, chair, or stone, not a building or a vehicle that is composed of many other objects." Relistening to this episode, found this tidbit defining objects on roll20.net.

Michael Graham Abernathy

It's criminal that nobody laughed when Caldwell said that Hen House was another good name for the opera.

Kyobo999

when he said Miles L i got really confused, it makes so much sense seeing your name

i am a smapphire

AH YES THE BIRD OPERA BIT HELLO AGAIN MY SILLY SWEET FRIEND

Hemingwhyy

“If you want to see pigeonhole, you’re going to have to go to the bird strip club, we don’t do that shit at bird-lesque” This is my favorite out of context quote ever

Alfie Wild

May it please the court!!

Ayn Like Ryan

Please boost this because Emily NEEDS this info! Please, listen to Bird Boy! I know they're on Spotify but idk about other platforms, they make music with bird sounds!! She needs to know, naddpoles!

Victoria Shotts

Ah this week you're just chillin ay Jake? I think you should add the adjective, so this week you're cool, chill Bailiff Jake 😎

Austin Gumbiner

I relate to Jake's skateboarding experience way too much

Evan Cordero

I can't wait for June when we get Hot Bird Summer. A bunch of sexy Aarakocra Bards at the opera. Also, the whole snack thing with the host keeping the snacks is legit a Hot Date episode

An_Armed_Bear

The DMG object rules say: "For the purpose of these rules, an object is a discrete, inanimate item like a window, door, sword, book, table, chair, or stone, not a building or a vehicle that is composed of many other objects". So yeah the tower can't be hit by Reduce by RAW, at least.

Courtney F.

Anyone else seeing shades of sexy rat with this hot bird business? Emily, what's with the attractive animals? I love it 😂

Michael Singer

I rule in favor of the combat DM. I believe this argument voids any use of homebrew monsters at their table, if this dm can’t homebrew this monster’s stat block with higher level spells then what can they homebrew? Can they use non wiz released stuff? Do they have to write out everything they will use before the session?

ChromaticMars

So when are we going to get a Birdlesque Oneshot?

Kodi Earnhardt

Has anybody been able to find Tommy Seagull (I guess that's how it's spelled?) on insta? I need this in my feed

Noah Jay

@tommysiegel I also tried it as Seagull first and didn't see anything that looked right. Thankfully IG will finish your spelling with verified accounts first ☺️

SoupLightning

Murph don't play coy, you've dated a pigeon before. You took Perry to a wedding and made out with them.

Stuart Harding

Can we please please please get a Short rest/Bonus episode of you guys absolutely trashed trying to play D&D!! I imagine it being the most chaotic thing ever haha. Might need to get a sober DM to actually run it though and will probably have to be heavy on the RP rather then combat

Rachel Clary

V serious as I say this - I actually have experience getting birds to sing for science. The trick is definitely to put males with hotter females - but the preference for females was really different across males!

Bulbarat

2 things with enlarge/reduce. "That is neither worn nor carried" a tower is fixed to the earth, I'd say that's a form of wearing if you could at all wear a tower. Secondly, it only reduces the target to half it's size in all dimensions and 1/8th the weight. So it'd still be a massive tower and they couldn't crush it or carry it, unless towers are lighter than I thought, 1/8th of 10,000 tons is still 1,000+ tons

Rigby Marke

Will Cher be in this rendition of Birdlesque?

TransValkyrie

Weird question here, but what format do these download in? I am wanting to get back into the campaign again, took a hiatus while I waited for the episodes to build up, downloaded all of Campaign 2, but can't find a single music or podcast player that will play them. I even went to the download folder, selected a file, clicked on details, and it doesn't give the format. All it shows is the size and a paper with a dog-eared corner for an icon.

Allie B.

I found it easiest to get the feed link through Patreon and add it to apple podcasts (I think you can do the same for the android version). That lets you play the Patreon exclusive versions! Otherwise you can play any that you download from Patreon on through the app as well, but I find that less convenient.

Nolan Childerhose

My poor Google search showed me some awful things.

Ian Hudson

Apologies if this has already been asked but Jake’s “maybe in trinyvale bro” made me realize he’s the only non- dm at the table. When is the Dungeon Nephew one shot??

Allie B.

Specifically it’s under memberships and overview. Then it’s “RSS link”! Hope that helps 😊

Beth Reidmiller

As a Beth, I was laughing so hard being yelled at by my DM parents.

TransValkyrie

Allison, thank you for the reply! Unfortunately it didn't work. Apparently I don't have an app that works with RSS, even though both Google Podcast and Podcast Addict are labeled as supporting RSS with Patreon. For some reason D&D Court and Short Rest download and work just fine, but the main campaign episodes all download as something other than a music file. I'll just have to download the Short Rests through here, than download the campaign through Google. I'm a truck driver and don't have cell service all that often, so I have to download to listen, streaming just doesn't work lol! But thanks again!

thedragonllama

I can’t wait to roll for Ass-timidation lol

Bunnay Ch33ks

I have three Silkie Roosters that would love to apply for a job at the Birdlesque

thedragonllama

Also I think Rainbow Butter was actually sipping that RyanUrphSoda

Alex Wicks

“Hot birds” are just the natural progression of sexy rat.

Michael Evans

That Rainbow Butter case is hurting my brain. I have the opposite problem with my DMPC. Our Fallen Asimaar Warlock got him from the Deck of Many Things at level 3. So my lvl.4 Fighter is just naturally better than the table. I WANT to kill him. I've already defeated 2 tough challenges by mistake. I've tried to "forget" his initiative to give my players a chance, but they never forget and demand "Wade helps." There having fun, which is great, but I feel like I'm holding them back

Nick Lerche

I second Ian's suggestion. Jake needs to DM . He's such a lord of the rings fan i think a short hobbit run or maybe a silmarillion deep cut , something short n nice but he can do it , I've listened to all your dungeon courts and it's a joy to hear how much Jake knows off the cuff after meeting him as hardwon surefoot, a virgin player. I'd love to see what he comes up with

masterofmerc .

Anyone else notice Emily's audio seamed a little loud??

John Haefner

I cannot believe that Emily dated the guitarist of my favorite band and I found out cause of Birdlesque

H-Train

to answer murph’s “why do players hate playing” question, the answer is pretty simple. people often base characters off of certain aspects of themselves, in fact that’s how most compelling pc’s are made. not only that, but by the nature of the game, players are forced to insert themselves into their character’s point of view. it also just so happens that most people don’t like it when bad things happen to them. basically, i suppose it’s a kind of very common, very subtle “character bleed”. also, another reason might be that often players have a very specific view of what/who they want their character to be, and failing at a certain thing might go against that characterization. and so since they’re afraid to lose, they’re afraid to play. i guess then, the nuclear solution would be to always play fuckup loser characters with no relatable qualities or distinguishing characteristics aside from making shit jokes and having puns for names so i guess, tl:dr, the solution for players fearing failure is for every party to be made up of link pinkystink and tiktok the sorcerer. is that what you want murph?

Nathann Morais

Murph saying "one HOT-ASS dude bird" completely broke me, lol

HalfLighter

To go with the Reduce discussion, this is from the DMG: “For the Purpose of these rules, an object is a discrete, inanimate item like a window, door, sword, book, table, chair, or stone, not a building or a vehicle that is composed of many other objects.“

HalfLighter

A player being afraid of failure isn’t a valid excuse for them bombing encounters. If anything, DND should be seen as a safe and healthy way to face a fear of failure without worrying about real-world consequences.

mandie lee

mixed bag: drunk session.

Ditte Lange

I neeeeed an update om the dessert dmpc

H-Train

you’re telling me! yeah no, i was just giving an explanation not an excuse

H-Train

hold on, did… did emily date the “how much can you fit under your skin” guy? that song was legit my most listened to of 2020

Casey Miles

i was actually in a campaign where my DM had a witch doing magic experiments and she cast enlarge on a chicken cage and ended up having a bunch of medium sized chickens escape that we had to go find and fight and it was a great dumb encounter to have.

Argonautica

Just want to throw out that if you're interesting in hearing some Co-GMs in action the real play podcast Fun City does this, they play Shadowrun (mostly). It is GMd by Mike Rugnetta from Idea Channel and Taylor Moore who plays many of the bad NPCs, and runs them in combat, though Mike still narrates things generally.

Julia

Private RSS support is a whole different thing than plain RSS. I had the same issues with, went with the PocketCast app and love it.

Elizabeth Harris

As a Beth, oh my god, I’ll learn violin if you want. I just want to make my D&D parents proud, ok?!

Andrea

I also needed to know! So that I could jam to Black-capped Chickadee. Ohh and the song changed as I'm writing to Eurasian Widgeon, could be a sexy slow number at Birdlesque for sure.

AmberDextrous!

Honestly, I would absolutely listen to a Mixed Bag that was just 'Insane Idea Shark Tank' with either insane ideas solicited from patreon, or each cast member bringing for their own insane idea and the rest of the cast acting as sharks for them. Birdlesque is a real winner here, guys.

Sebastian Lecha

The host hosting to get people to bring food is an episode from Hot Date.

Gweneficial

FWIW I would absolutely listen to the group playing sloshed as a non-canon ep or mixed bag or something 👀

Gettier

I've seen dual DM-ing on Fun City go well when one person just does story and the other just does bad guys and about half the NPCs

Maddy96

I just recently heard about the field of ontology, so the "what counts as an object" philosophical debate is really intriguing to me. Kind of pointless to dig into, especially when it comes to DnD, but trippy nonetheless. If anyone wants to keep nerding out about it, Vsauce has a really awesome introductory video about it called "Do Chairs Exist?"

Henry

Sooooo loud

Michael Singer

Important question…. Can we please get a ryan burphy one shot for a mixed bag 🥺🥺

Grant Klein

Dude same, I love jukebox the ghost and I had no idea they dated

Mariela Renquist

.... All i could think of during the first one was "D'Morce Court"

Dana Kayser

I am absolutely obsessed with the fact that Emily used to date Tommy Seigel. Jukebox the ghost is my favorite band of all time this is WILD

Dana Kayser

The two things I listen to most in my life are jukebox the ghost albums and naddpod. To say I freaked out when she casually mentioned this is an understatement 😅

Neji

I like how all punishments just roped everyone into doing community service for The Court's new insane side hustle.

Jolacks

I cannot believe Emily dated tommy what a small world!!!

hunky dory

I think a bird opera one shot should be Jake's first DMing

Chris F

Im hyped to see the return of hot cavill bird

Benjamin Schwaller

I was thinking about Tommy's bird drawings the whole time and then it came full circle.

Arwyn Robinson

CASE UPDATE FOR JAKE: Sorry I am so late to the conversation because I only just listened to this episode (my husband and I listen to these together). So excited mine got picked (3rd time too thanks!) The result was is that we finished the campaign with me as the story DM and the combat DM (which was only 3 or 4 more sessions). In a later session he ended up having one of the NPCs be a huge hero and the NPC killed one of the BBEGs and relegated the players to only fighting the weenies, which made the players really upset. Needless to say, the combat DM and I absolutely got divorced after this campaign. I ended up splitting up my group of players into guys vs girls, which actually worked out because then the wives and husbands got to take a game night for themselves and the group that wasn't playing watches the kids. I let the Combat DM know that because the groups where smaller, I no longer needed a co-dm and thanked him for his help. It was a bummer because I could tell he was unhappy with the news, but my group of players are much happier with the arrangement, so it is what it is. :/ It was a valuable lesson in communication and expectations, and making the tough decisions to do what's best for a group of players. Thank you for the review of the case and for the valuable insight you all provided. I deeply appreciate the change to grow as a DM.

Vizier

hahahahhaa

Vizier

i cant stop laughing

Summer Tribe

what counts as discrete tho? a sword is made of multiple metals forged together, a chair held together with wood and nails, a book by glue and different papers, a window by glass and a wooden frame.

Summer Tribe

the concept of what is worn or carried becomes vague very quickly. I guess being on a horse makes enlarge/reduce not capable of having an effect on you

Bulbarat

Even still, it would've still been too massive to crush or carry. But that only if your strict about rules, I'm all about having fun, if the dice allow it

Summer Tribe

these are bad examples of what count as discrete. A window is made up of glass and a wooden frame which itself is held together with nails. A book is glue and paper and different paper, a table and a chair would be wood and nails. A tower may be as simple as wood held together with nails as well, or as stone held together with mortar, no reason it shouldn't be included

Summer Tribe

you can definitely get into the whole Ship of Theseus thing talking about this stuff. Or talking about how your body's cells replace themselves over the course of x years or whatever. As a DM it's probably best to just not let your players build up expectations that you won't let them see thru

Summer Tribe

manipulating size is a huge issue in 5e, which I think is why they don't have PC races that are large or tiny. imagine playing a fairy campaign wherein fireball was still fireball. if it still had the same radius but you were in some kind of adorable mushroom hut you would immediately immolate the tiny or diminutive size equivalent of a city block. Likewise if you were playing a giant and tried to use reduce on something, all the things of relevant size to you would be something that you'd less readily argue are objects. Murph is talking about using the spell to shrink a castle as being absurd but again, if you're a medium size creature and you're using it on a tiny size hut that a super small creature lives in my guess is he would allow it, tho I don't recall his position on the reducing a door so it drops out of the frame situation. He says you're "opening a bag of worms" (?) but really the designers did this in the first place. anyway besides all that nerd shit, this was one of the funniest DnD courts, forcing Jake to co-own the birdlesque house was hilarious back to nerd shit I don't know why Emily is talking like adding a d4 is less strong than giving advantage. Advantage a)on average provides about a +3.5, a d4 on average provides a +3 b) doesn't allow you to beat DCs you couldn't have beaten before, which a d4 does and c) giving advantage can turn into a disadvantage/advantage war wherein you're checking how many sources you have of either, whereas adding a d4 can just freely stack with other sources of extra dice such as guidance or bless
