@Jake Hurwitz Have you looked at Volo's Guide to Subraces? There is Giant lineage in there for being close to half giants. I built a Fireborn Goliath decended from Fire giants. Gives you different abilities closer to Frost giant desendant background. Goliaths are my fav race in D&D 5e

Emily - I know this is a selfish ask, but I really hope you don't name your character Zephyr. My pet cockatiel, Zephyr (who we also called Zeph) passed away recently at only a year old, and NADDPOD is one of the few things currently that really helps me get away from the depression. If I was hearing his name constantly I'm not sure I could keep listening. I know you can't tailor to everyone's needs and anyone could have a problem with any name, but... god, I hope Zephyr isn't the final name pick.

I had a slightly hard time understanding whether the "program" was a prestigious honor for volunteers or more of a conscription-based corporation army? If you decide to go the prestigious route, then maybe someone who wants to play an outcast character could still reasonably attend/be selected if someone wealthy/influential were to "sponsor" them? That would explain why a Bullywug who didn't know their parents could end up there - but why they still might end up on the proverbial "D team". As an example, maybe Solomon had a surrogate parent/mentor figure with past connections to Mothership etc. who sponsored them, which could also open up some cool roleplaying moments! Of course, ignore the above if it's already decided - It was just one of my few points of confusion. Can't wait for the first episode either way!

I like the idea of Zephyr, but it also gives me really big Saccharina vibes. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I mean Jake only plays big good looking fighters. I dunno, I might be in the minority but I disagree with Murph on the idea of the players filling certain roles for the show. I think it’s so cool watching people learn how classes work and flexing that character range. Would be fun to see (hear?) Jake play a wizard, Emily play a full barbarian, and Caldwell playing just a normal straight laced dude.

Caldwell! Your idea got me so inspired and I kinda ran with it while y’all were riffing, but - what if Saul was born with an extra set of limbs due to runoff and pollution from the mothership - a classic two headed fish conundrum. Their family, not knowing exactly what to do with the mutant baby, sent him to this academy at an early age. While there, Saul excelled at everything they threw at them, but Saul wasn’t what they considered ‘perfect,’ and Saul’s damn arms couldn’t fit in their standardized super suit, and instead of tailoring a special fit, they plucked off those excess appendages and called it a day. Now, Saul struggles to maneuver as they used to, but, hey, at least they look damn fine in this suit, and have the ‘right’ number of limbs. The academy knows what’s best, right? Until one day two huge spiritual arms tear through that beautiful uniform during sparring practice, and they absolutely rock their opponent, but are from the match. Does Saul hide his astral arms to try to ‘fit in’ with what’s perfect? Do they leave the academy to work on their own mental health - deprogramming what Saul thinks is perfect? Does Saul still wear that damn suit?! Because admittedly, holes or no holes, they look fly as hell.

Part of this shows glory is the absolute delight they don’t have to force it. Caldwell playing a straight laced dude sounds like he “wouldn’t have daycare” on those recording days. Jake has also said he wouldn’t really enjoy prepping spells and keeping them straight. Jake enjoys playing a hot fighter dude as much as Emily loves deep diving spells and as much as Caldwell likes to goof gods. Yes, it’s possible & would be kinda funny to hear the sweat bead drop off @Jake to the mic, but maybe…that’s a mixed bag one shot holiday special…where moonshine, hardwon, and Beverly all swap each other’s character classes 😶 or a live show? @Caldwell

Two levels of paladin and the rest of the way in swords bard is genuinely one of my favourite builds ever, I've played it at a few different levels and its literally so good! Like its maybe not as broken as a sorcadin or a sorlock in terms of pure damage, but you can really do so much with it. Even though its not a prepared caster like wizard or druid, there's soo much variability in how you can play one from session to session, you can go crazy with smites using the bard's spell progression, you can focus on heals and buffs and bardics, or you can go hard on bard debuffs (also you get to be awesome with skill checks 'cause bard) like its genuinely soo much fun

Love it! Grung (bullywug) is a fun class to play! It sounds like Emily's considering a wild magic sorcerer which I'm playing as right now. If I can recommend something, we tweaked the wild magic mechanic to make it seem more wild and play more of a part in the action. Rather than relying on a nat 1 to trigger the surge, we have a counter that starts at (10 - sorcerer level - charisma modifier), and never goes below 2. When casting a spell, you roll against the counter and if it meets it or is lower, the surge is triggered. If it's not met, the counter increases by 1. So at level 1 with say a +2 charisma modifier, the counter would start at 7 or lower. If the roll doesn't trigger it, it increases to 8. We've found that this makes the wild magic play a much bigger part in our campaign. It increases the tension/drama but there have also been times when the surge has come in handy, for example when I accidentally polymorphed myself into a spider and was able to escape a very tricky situation. And it also builds in a control mechanic as you increase in level and, in theory, learn to control it better. Just an idea! Love everyone's character ideas so far and can't wait for the campaign to start!!

There’s this thing that happens in the winter when there’s some moisture in the air (but not enough to form clouds) where, if it’s cold enough, the moisture can freeze and form these tiny ice crystals that just come out of the sky that look like they’re floating in the air (called diamond dust). They’re so small that it’s kind of hard to see the crystals themselves but they do shimmer in the sunlight in a really magical way which makes it look like it’s snowing without any clouds and can cause halos/rainbows to appear in really interesting places in the sky. All that to say, I think it’s really beautiful to imagine these sparkling crystals spontaneously forming around emily’s “essence of water” character any time jake’s character does some particularly cold magic nearby and I can’t wait to see the other interesting ways that all of these really cool characters mix together!

I adore the idea of Emily's bard/paladin and can imagine just how well it would work mechanically! I am interested to see how a sorcerer/cleric would end up playing since they would be dependent on both CHA and WIS for spellcasting. I totally understand wanting more spells though. A Divine Soul sorcerer might scratch that healing and expanded spell list itch, but I can see the appeal of choosing different cleric spells each day. Super looking forward to the campaign either way!!

Emily's bard character sounds a lot like Tokuno'o Tokumichi from Kengan Omega. He always wanted to become a writer but was gifted with a powerful body instead (and 0 writing ability). I would warn that TAZ has an Astral Monk currently, but don't be too discouraged bc I love punchy frog boi!!!! Also ADORE Zeph. We have an eladrin that just came back into my friend and i's campaign, and it was really sweet to see them go from working alone winter to I love my friends fall (we also have a very good sacrifice/protection cleric). I think Em could do really well with it, especially focusing on the small things of seasons. Also, I feel like starting after a breakup is a good way to play it, changing seasons as she recovers.

All I could think about for the palabard not getting in to the super soldiers is if she PURPOSELY failed the test. Like only half-heartedly made her way through the tests because she didn’t want to be a soldier, she wanted to be a poet

Emily's writer character is similar to one of my ideas. A mark of scribing gnome, who comes from a prestigious family of scribes, librarians and scholars. He is the black sheep of the family because he chose fiction writing instead of non fiction. His call to action is he wanted to write an adventure novel but had writer's block and decided to join the mercenary band for story inspiration.

I love Jake's idea. Really seemed so fully formed. Was a bit iffy on Caldwell until they landed on his astral soul being a heavy armoured knight, because that's what he aspires to be. Unfortunately, I'm really not feeling Emily's characters this time around. Fia and Moonshine seemed so solid and real straight out of the box, these couple of ideas just seem a bit messy/mechanic focused. Not hating on Em or anything, just feels like nothing is jumping out and screaming this is a story I want to invest in, that said the Eladrin was my favourite pitch. Maybe instead of running combat with these two characters do a 1 on 1 with Murph for role play of a backstory event, flesh it out a bit and see if things start to click with one of them.

The D-Team is a great name for the group, follows along to bahumia, in that the name is a reference to their ineptitude and a naughty body part, not quite as elegant as band of boobs, but still. Also you could actually do merch with it.

I love me a paladin/bard!! I played one for a oneshot and it was such a great combo. 3lvl oath of crown and 2lvl bard to give me jack of all trades w/ the half proficiency to everything. He was a half orc frat boy who spend his summer break with his boys trying sell protein powder to get ahead in his MLM. #inspirational #beyourownboss

I think the best bet for Emily's character is to maybe consolidate the bard paladin and eladrin idea! I don't think they're necessarily mutually exclusive and I think they're both great ideas!

Also I like the idea of the relationship between the duck familiar and Zeph being a bit more distant than Emily's other familiars have been, like it just follows her around and pecks at bread crumbs while they're about town and then eventually there's an event where the duck decides to get more involved or Zeph sees its in trouble and steps in and then they begin to have some comeraderie. Perhaps even the duck is also a creature that has been affected by the magical nature of Ezry and has an untapped potential, WHICH ALSO could lead into the Ugly Duckling story of it transforming into the Beautiful Swan!

I'm shocked to see 198 comments and this is the only one that mentions Rosie Beestinger! Kate literally calls her a "tight grandma" many times. I was wondering whether they were playing the joke super dry or they really didn't know. I would have thought the NADDPOD and C-team fandoms would overlap much more.

This is a small thing but I didn’t like how murph and the rest of the crew kept bringing up Emily’s practice session with murph after she said she didn’t want it to be shared. Regardless of the reason she seemed pretty earnest when she didn’t want it brought up at the beginning and there can be social pressure when everyone else starts to joke about it to let it go. Not sure if that was really a big deal to her or not but rubbed me the wrong way a bit.

I played an Eladrin who continuously changed seasons according to their mood in a Strahd game and it was really cool albeit a bit hard to keep up with. It really offered a lot of neat RP opportunities. Like, she started as Winter because it was just her travelling with one other person but as she got to know the group and see herself as the "group mom" she went to Autumn and really leaned into a nurturing/maternal personality but then she would still turn to Spring or Summer if she was especially happy or angry

Is the "super soldier" angle too similar to the Hexblood storyline? Feels very samey, to have been experimental super soldiers, even if the hexbloods were "successful" and the new characters are "failures", but maybe being in a different setting will make it feel distinct.
