I do not think Druids need more armor choices! Flavor as Bones sure but no mechanical bonus. Because holy crap Moon Druids are soo sturdy! Ac and hp of a wildshape, then another wildshape at a higher level, and then their own actual ac hp? Geeze!! They are so cool

The Plug

the PBH literally says Druids won’t wear armour or use shields made of metal though 😩

2026-10-05 21:00 Won't doesnt mean can't. It's legacy fluff that amounts to a single AC difference and the PHB also says that you can deviate from what's suggested there as flavor based options. also what you will or won't do is a character decision

It's legacy fluff that amounts to a single AC difference (from the armor in SCAG, tho it's actually no AC difference if you can get your hands on that mind flayer armor) and the PHB also says that you can deviate from what's suggested there as flavor based options. also what you will or won't do is a character decision

It's a 1 AC difference. And moon is a mid sub between 4 and 18

Devrix and chuffey sound like kiki and bouba thematically

ThacoIsWacko

@ last case: I have a house rule that I've used for decades: Magical clothing resides to fit a new wearer, unless its description explicitly mentions it's size or immutability.

ThacoIsWacko

I threw alignment out the windows a LOOOOOONG time ago. Always hated it.

I DM a game where the druid PC really didn’t like his stats, and regretted the way he balanced them. As they were searching through a cultists hoard, the Druid found a scroll in Sylvan that only he could read, which was a treatise on nature that he could study during a long rest to do a one time re-roll of his stats. The table pretty much agreed that it was a non-game breaking way to deal with it.

M

I realize this episode is from years ago but I think the justices didnt realize that druids get medium armor proficiency. So without noticing the metal thing the player probably picked scale armor or smth and not having access to that fundamentally changes the character.

Venus Astria

That email case was low key operation slippery puppet

Marcos

On my way to the Chicago live show!

Declan Konesky

Oh please do more Jeremy cobbford sage advice. This should also be a new Patreon feed segment. The 2 crew asks for sage advice and mostly the advice is misty step does not work that way. Or you knows a sustainable bit version of that

Who are we to say a lawful person is playing their character wrong? Some characters are truly lawful then it can make some very fun scenarios. I personally applaud this player for playing the roll and offering to find his own way so that he creates a character flaw (that can change) and not necessarily interfering in the party plan

Erin

One of the players in my party started off the campaign as the most lawful good paladin ever. It got to the point that some of us were getting frustrated and snarky with them, especially after they made a couple of unilateral decisions for the entire party. Two things happened. First, the DM chewed us out because the player said in private that they didn’t feel welcome at the table anymore. Then the DM presented the player with a powerful temptation, and they became an Oathbreaker. They got handed a new character sheet midsession—such drama. They’re more fun to play with now that they aren’t so hidebound by their alignment.

Kristen with-a-K

I do agree with some of what was brought up in my case about others having fun in their own way. I probably didn't clarify my point as well as I should have concerning everything that was emailed but, alas, judgement has been ruled and I accept with grace. Also, it's very exciting to be picked! Love you all and can't wait to see you in SF!

Achillesnick

That's on y'all honestly, the player just wanted to play lawful good paladin and y'all didn't just ask them to tone it down or talk it out?

Erin

We talked it out a couple of times in character but struggled to reach a compromise.

Theodore Giesen

Why doesn’t the Druid just get scale mail? It’s 1 AC worse than a breastplate and costs 700 gold less.

Nat One Studio

Speaking of Alignments. I actually prefer my players chose a ethics policy to follow instead (utilitarian, ethics of care, egoism). It doesn't bind them to one set of actions but forces them to ask how their characters would approach a problem and justify their actions.

Nat One Studio

There are more, I just listed the three at the top of my head

Dylan C

That's really cool. I kind of like that because sometimes alignment can be a little bit nebulous and hard to define. But the ethics thing is interesting because I could easily go "what would a utilitarian do?" I also like it because it's easy to make situations that challenge their ethics which is very good story wise

Avery Vinter

Fyi Druids get medium armor and some of those are metal based so they aren't cheating for extra proficiency.

Abbie Kristiansen-Jones

In one of the campaigns I play in one of the other PCs died and the new character he rolled was a lawful good, very jolly Pacifist cleric... My character was a chaotic good half orc barbarian who's personality was calm violence (somehow) 😅, we bickered in character so often but after every game I made sure that he knew I loved him and all of his characters and their choices but my character finds his so effing frustrating 😂 Honestly it made for great player role playing conflict, usually resolved by the party bard talking us down by telling a tale and the sorcerer threatening to murder us like she did the first PC 😂 ( it was an accident and the player felt so guilty).

Teo Tamashiro-Harris

Scale mail is metal, unless you mean like fish scales I guess, but the 5e armour specifies it's made of metal

Abbie Kristiansen-Jones

I think I've subconsciously always done this my characters typically do anything for the greater good ( my fave alignment is chaotic good) which is Utilitarian, right? That's a really good idea though, definitely going to suggest that to my DMs for next campaigns!

Kevin Wyatt-Stone

"Spellcasters don't feel overpowered" - Emily Axford, who played both Moonshine Cybin and Saccharina Frostwhip XD

8BitBruché

I had a similar situation with a Druid player. They were concerned about the lack of armor choices and asked if there was anything else they could wear aside from RAW. So I looked into previous versions of D&D and Pathfinder and found Leafweave Armor. Leaves with the durability of metal woven together. Perfect for Druids.

Erin

Okay, so what I'm hearing is that I need to do better about respecting everyone's playstyle and communicating if/when I get frustrated. I'm still relatively new to this!

Nat One Studio

Utilitarian is "This action is good as long as the outcomes are good". Ends justify the means. It doesn't need to be morally good, which I think helps get around roadblocks. You can be a "good" character that does a bad thing for the greater good...like stealing a boat.

Nat One Studio

I had a great Evil character that I played with Egoism. Whatever was best for him was good. If it didn't benefit him, he didn't do it. As a Rogue, this meant stealing everything in sight would land him in jail, which was bad, so he didn't do it. But if he was certain he could get away with it and the repercussions were with acceptable bounds, you bet your biscuits he was doing it

Cheddar Whizard

My brain broke for a second when I heard that.

Abbie Kristiansen-Jones

Erin, to be honest there's no right or wrong way to play as long as all the people at the table or what ever medium you use to play are respectful to eachother and like say something when it's not working for them! I've been at a table with long time friends and just been really frustrated and part of that has been, I'm not enjoying how my character is interacting, so I'm going to speak to my dm and create a new character who could fit in better! Just remember everyone is trying to have fun and it's no one's aim to annoy the other players, but if a game isn't working for you say something! When it comes to another players character causing problems for the whole rest of the party the DM should step in and remind them they chose to play a collaborative game and if that character doesn't want to do any of the plot hooks then maybe that's not the right character for this game!

Her Majesty, Claudette

The Metal thing is fully just holdover from older editions that has no reason to be present anymore.

Achillesnick

Incorrect, it's called flavor. Getting rid of flavor does nothing but hurt the game, that being said be creative and DMs like me will let you use anything that was metal as Ironwood or something

Her Majesty, Claudette

Flavor exists all over the book. None of this manifests as hard rules that limit what your character can and can't do. In 5e there aren't even hard rules on what happens if a druid wears metal armor. Because in previous editions iirc there were actually specifics of what happened. The Metal rule has been around long enough that its here because of that. It doesn't even add much flavor wise. There are ways to add flavor without making it seem mandatory for arbitrary reasons.

Aj Diller

Since listening to Naddpod, I have realized that I am hanging with the wrong friends. There are Final Fantasy references, which most people irl don't make, but I have had a few. But, the best is the Animorphs references. I don't thin I have ever met another person that can talk about these books. I literally have the entire set of books from when I was a child. I feel like a huge nerd for typing this online, but this is a safe environment. RIGHT!? Ok you can make fun of me.

hell

i may have misunderstood, but it sounded to me like the druid’s armor was from the starting equipment they received in lieu of 100 (1000?) gp, which to me sounds like it was medium armor that they were fine to have but since it was metal it felt wrong to use, no?

Talia

I haven't seen anyone comment to clarify yet, but Fairy Tail is an manga/anime that is what the last court case was based on. That's why the tabaxi was small, like Happy who is a talking cat in the series. At least that's what it sounded like, but I can't find the comment on the previous post.

Bastet

This! Hope the gang revisits this since they were ruling on incorrect knowledge of the relevant rules.

Noah Jay

Love the druid question discussion. My druid multiclassed with cleric after we lost a party member in a battle and he was forced (because of action economy) to retreat while wild shaped as a war horse and carrying another party member. The lack of ability to heal effectively was the impetus to seeking a deity for that power, so my little commune Earth genasi sought the favor of Apollo and is now a level 5 druid/level 2 cleric. The WIS and hit die are the same so it meshes really well.

Noah Jay

Yeah... Not sure what armor they had because they didn't say what type. It should have been able to change to hide armor.

Noah Jay

Right, not OVER powered. Just as powerful as Emily needs them to be 😅

John Wessels

Yea that's what it sounded like to me. They would have been proficient in it but for the weird "no metal". To me the no metal thing is a roleplay prompt not a rule

FlapJackAce

"It's a fairytale campaign so things get grim(grimm)" I don't know if Caldwell intentionally said it but was *chefs kiss*👌🏾

H-Train

why was emily so hung up on the phrasing of that one question? it seemed pretty obvious that they were being facetious with the “druids don’t like metal thing” and that they really meant “part of the druid’s class features is that they cannot wear metal armor”. meanwhile, for 5/6 of the case emily thought it was a matter of opinion. i guess the case was phrased weird but still

Casey Miles

Yall being too mean about alignment

Rhiannon Lang

on the topic of the naddpod crew being in people’s dreams, i cannot count the amount of times that i have met murph and emily while dreaming. One time I met them at a shopping mall and emily told me to look up this really cute animal. Then a few months later (in real life) on a patreon episode, jake presented a slideshow that a fan sent in of the animals at the place they worked at and one of them looked exactly like the animal emily told me to look up.

ThrilloftheFright (Ashleigh)

On their old podcast, 8-Bit Book Club, Murph talked about writing an Animorphs fan fiction, in which he morphed into a parakeet.

Lianne Zen

It's so funny that you mentioned this; I've been listening to them for years and this past week, for the first time, I had three dreams where I met or was friends with some/all of the crew. So bizarre.

Lianne Zen

Amazing set of hearings, as always! I just wanted to say how fantastic Jeremy Cobb was as a guest. I wasn't familiar with him before these court sessions, but he was a gem!

Eddie Jentz

During the final case, they failed to take into account the “Puss in Boots” defense. He was a normal sized cat in human sized boots. The bear barbarian could have totally fit in the boots.

Lobotomite

Remember that druids also have the barkskin spell. Makes your AC 16 no matter what armor you are wearing.

J Harkins

I'm just constantly begging people to play the characters not the alignments the alignment is characterization using it as anything else is limiting and boring

Lily Everett-Curwick

The other thing I like to keep in mind about strategizing away from the table mid-combat is that the characters are way more skilled at fighting than any of the players, and ostensibly they have spent more time together on the road than what is actively roleplayed out. So figuratively, the characters could have discussed possible battle strategies at other times anyway.
