Champ wild

Was just thinking that ! Emily often manifests her destiny . Her pitch for C2 as moonshine is eeriely similar to C3

Spencer

I’m a few years late, but I had to point out: what are the odds that the player who claimed to be a god was simply lying? As in, in-character. I could totally imagine someone in a fantasy world like that making a bold claim to get out of trouble or manipulate people, and that would be a valid thing for a PC to do. It also makes sense as to why the player didn’t want to change his backstory for the DM later.

Ian Mcilwean

Why don't you just pull a fucking T-Rex out of the hat. You're already doing everything in bad faith. Just do whatever you want.

Mortimer Lunch

3 and a half years later I came back to mention this because omg Emily crying laughing while making the Murph Finch voice absolutely killed me. So freaking funny.

riskutforthebriskut

ah yes because that final case had everything to do with him being a guy and not being an unfun psycho

Paul McCubbrey

Inflation doesn't increase the value of goods, it decreases the value of currency. If anything it would cause the nominal component cost of every spell to increase gradually but exponentially over time. Unless, of course, gold pieces were functionally backed by component cost, fixing their value and preventing inflation (assuming perfect liquidity of gold pieces as chits for casting services).

Parker J

would love to see that deep diving eagle merch line

Fia (but not Boginya)

Cut to Emily playing a Swarmkeeper Ranger who summons Finches. All Hail the Bird Queen!

joel

The Finch Dome? I've heard of places Murph would love to be jailed, but this is ridiculous

Lawnmower Blenny

This episode was a hoot but it really ruffles my feathers that finches were discussed and Murph didn’t get razzed about that time when he wrote an Animorphs fan fic about turning into a finch

Nicholas

It's like the birds were manifesting real life revenge on Jake for Hardwons mistreatment of caw-caw.

Adah Kinzer

Please punch the mansplaining table tattler

Austin Clark

It would have been cool if they changed it to he’s a demigod and he’s using all his power to hide the crystals presence or something but once the monster is released they can go through a trail to get their powers back or become the mortal they took over.

Bones

Please make that poster!

King of the City Pigeons

I think a good rule of thumb for PCs is to NOT bring in depth nature/science facts for DND. I mean…if your DM is cool with it go to town…but if I was DM and all of a sudden I had a PC showing me a YouTube video on hawks when we were talking about dnd rules, I’d be annoyed.

Grace Bee

I work on/help run an organic chicken farm where we get the chicks after they've been hatched and they get butchered 10 weeks later, and we do say "we raise chickens" when talking about the farm

evans-endeavors

It was mentioned in the episode briefly, but I was thinking about it too! The number of players who don’t share their backstories with the DM ?? I didn’t even realize that was a thing! I won’t even start a campaign until I get character information and backstory from my players.

Alissa Telling

Roosters are terrifying. My family had some chickens when I was in high school. We had one rooster that was super mean, if you ever turned your back on him he would charge at you and try to attack you. Once he snuck up behind me and attacked my leg. I ended up with a baseball size deep purple bruise on the side of my leg.

Jess W

Right!!! I had no idea it was a thing either. We always work with our DMs for character build and backstory... then the DM can change up the story to incorporate character arcs etc. Wild. lol

tacticalgrandma

Caldwell vultures will throw up on things that are threatening them to scare them off. In the summer they shit on their feet to cool down. They are delightfully unsanitary. Please don’t let that vulture hold your baby.

Bonky Fiasco

This made me crave croissants so much that I went out just to get one. However, having learned a lesson from Jake's experience, I ate it inside the safety of my own house.

Penny Garbo

Doves and dodos are in the same family but are not closely related. It would be like saying you can summon any person you want then try and summon a chimp. Close but not that close.

Bill Pack

Dodos literally aren't even doves.

Cameron A

I hate to disagree with the judges, but I think it's clear that they haven't watched boss baby and I think they need to retry the case. I've only watched boss baby one, but it legitimately has a pretty big world which I think would be fine for DND. The actual plot of the movie is about a dystopian baby world and how a corrupt business baby is taking control of it by sending all of his competitors to the human world to be born... Riveting stuff.

Ian Hudson

Birdyguard is inspired, Emily. We Stan our Bird Queen

Ian Hudson

Is any of the 2crew on cameo for DnD related cameos???

Micah

Is Caldwell stuck in Sal voice?

Noah Crozier

If a PC announces that their backstory is they are a god that's when you make them roll a deception check

Cait Malone

Long time listener, first time commenter - PLEASE make the "Believe" poster!

Harry B

Woah you do… turkey. Fucking hilarious.

Palmate Antlers

Wow, good episode for anyone named Alex lol free nat 20 whenever you want!

Tyler

Wait, where was tucker during the croissant incident?! I'm worried for his relationship with Jill, is it on the rocks?

Fulltime Cleric

I love this energy, but you have to know that they're called "Angler Fish" not "Lantern Fish" 😂

piecemeal

this made me want to play a god who fell in love with a mortal and became mortal to be with them (retaining some power), only to learn that the mortal loved their divinity not personality and the ex-god gets dumped, sending them on an adventure of self-discovery. A warlock who is their own patron.

Queue

Imagine playing an undercover god and not telling anyone, only for someone else at the table to reveal themselves as the same undercover god.

panpolypuff

Good point. I'm the type to believe that this kind of research by the player deserves a reward though. Especially if it changes nothing mechanically, which is where "summoning a bizarre species of familiar" firmly lands.

Lawnmower Blenny

@tubaginger check out the Mortal Kombat slash fiction episode of 8 bit book club for some good old-fashioned Emily, Murph, & Caldwell goofs

John

I had the same experience as Jake recently re: croissant vultures. I was munching on a delicious croissant as I was sitting on a planter bench in Williamsburg, and those finch bastards had me SURROUNDED. I did not feel safe, neither from peckers nor poop.

Lil’ Stinky

I genuinely don’t understand why the concept of this upsets them so much! It sounds kind of fun to me, I would happily dm or play in a boss baby themed game. In fact these murph rantings make me want to do it out of sheer stubborn spite 😌

Peydon Bush

I need that eagle poster

Renevar

Given Murphs deep love for finches is it any surprise how bird focused this court is?

Magestain

I love that we're so into birds. I have 13 birds.

Heckin Good

It isn't them. Fans of the show arranged and recorded it.

Eleanor

I think that the most popular actual play in the world relies too much on revealing secrets and also is pretty opaque about DM/player collaboration. Ironically they definitely play with a complete and total "DM is the world and players are their characters" philosophy BUT a viewer who doesn't know much about D&D might not pick up on that and just pick up on the idea of it's cool and fun to have a secret from other players--I know that I was certainly disappointed by how non-earth-shattering my character reveal was in my first proper campaign.

Luke M. Thomas

So incredibly satisfying that its 48 minutes exactly. Great ep

vrtx

I thought the reason birds can see into water is because they're looking straight down into it. At an angle the water is too reflective.

Jordan Clement

I'd like to put in an appeal for the Eagle case. Eagles aren't swimming through the water looking for prey. Birds of prey dive on surface level fish. Plz appeal this case. I believe the DM is in the right. My client was inhumanely punished.

coconut

i cant stop laughing at Zac's "Go to hell"

Mak

I always set a precedent when my players build characters - here’s the setting, build something you’ll have fun with, and don’t be overpowered because sometimes failure is worth it. My players like this method but I am also going to put the lid on things that are overkill.

Colin Whelan

I know it's probably bad fashion, but I must point our wonderful justices and lovely bailiff to the Dumpstat podcast, where they have discussed the Evil Bird Conspiracy of D&D.

Bryan Holmes

D&D Court, always the highlight of my day, let's get into it

Summer Tribe

Emily's defense of not knowing what doves are isn't a very good argument. let em have the dodo. What's inherently dumb about a dodo anyway? Chult is a major campaign setting with dinosaurs ffs

Summer Tribe

they literally are tho, they're columbidae

Summer Tribe

but the family is referred to as doves aint it

Bill Pack

Dodo is to columbidae as human is to hominidae. Dodos are a subfamily, genus, and species separated from any living dove or pigeon. But sure, they're in the same family. But then we need to figure out how much real world taxonomy figures into DND mechanics. If something says I can summon a gorilla or a chimpanzee could I summon a human? Same family.

Bulbarat

Their DMS gonna have to listen to the whole case for them to redeem that coupon 😂 cause you didn't say their username

2026-09-05 07:00 I think that the dm was wrong for inflating prices because the spell needs 1000GPS worth of oils, so if the oils cost 3000 gold pieces you’ll only need a third of that for the spell. So he owes you two castings of reincarnate.

Just subbed to the Patreon and making my way through these old EPs: in the case of the hat, seems like the issue was one of them? Like the DM was going for vaudeville stage magician who pulls rabbits and doves out of a hat, so changing the bird fucked with the theme?

Maya

Who is listening to this after ACOFAF, in which Emily gets to live her bird fantasy??
