Hannah

it’s so crazy that em brought up a.a milne when he did write a stage play adaptation

Dexter OG

this is my favorite book of all time… their misunderstanding of the content is just delightful

Rafael C

Mr Toad's birthday is coming back around Murph... you've still got time to redeem yourself for last year...

Doctor Ransom

Whoa! April 4th is my birthday! Aries babies represent!

Adam D

April 17th, ARIES REPRESENT!

Ann Parra

I’m the same age as y’all and I read, “ The Wind in The Willows” as a child. I thought everyone did, but I’m now realizing I was mistaken. I absolutely loved it as a child. Hopefully that doesn’t reflect poorly on young me, lol.

riddle me grinch

Ok thanks for saying it Emily. I also thought this was a Frog and Toad situation and didn't put it together until you said it.

Scruggzi

I loved this so much as a kid. The Paddington Bear stop motion from the 70s has a similar vibe.

Shawn Ritz Arthur

Just drew a bath, cannot wait to relax and listen to this insanity

Nesve Fowl

Yes time for another 8-bit book club dive.

Jack Farley

You guys absolutely punked me! I thought this was gonna be dungeon court but Mr.Toad takes priority

Arwyn Robinson

Haven't listened yet, but I'm totally mentally prepared for maniacal energy for this mixed bag.

Noah James Perito

There was a film prequel to the series… mixed bag opp?

emery board

hearing 8bbc opening after starting to make my way through the backlog,,, chef's kiss

Leo

Mr Toad One shot!!

Madeleine D

Not my Austen-ass, historical fantasy ass nerd self joyfully shouting “Mr Toad has LAND! All them idle rich bitches got rent money! And your grandpa made a bazillion pounds from, like, having a mill or doing anything too close to Trade (ew gross ugh) you kept your damn mouth shut about it and married a lady who came with some frickin REAL ESTATE!”

Marianne

Who else lost their shit when Murph mentioned Under the Umbrella Tree?

jackalope503

I can't tell what I enjoyed more, this charming show or how annoyed Jake was by these sauced-up British critters

THEJordonBrown

I can’t believe I just watched that entire episode

Amos Polglaze

Anyone else horrified when they googled Zoobilee Zoo?

alyssa

I listened to this and immediately watched the show. 😭😭😭 amazing

Aaron Burnell

There is no way for me to accurately explain the joy it brings me at the mention/declaration that Swat Kats was awesome. That was my shit and sometimes I fear it was a fever dream.

Aaron Burnell

Also the explanation of inherited wealth as "someone in the family once knew the king" and "it was conquest and imperialism!" Will be joining my daily vocab

Jeff Osvold

Hearing the 8BBC theme again put a big ole smile on my face! #Where’sTheHatch

Dalton Elliott

My senior year of high school I played Rat in the play adaptation of The Wind in the Willows this hits such a good niche for me ❤

Jeffrey Steck, Lord of the Fjord

He was sick cause it started raining on him. Just cause they panned by an empty decanter on the dresser did not read to me that he drank it last night. Objection! Speculation!

Maniak

Jesus the cover

Fraser Connell

I don’t know if this comes up in the ep yet, but Rat is voiced by Peter Sallis - the voice of Wallace from Wallace and Gromit! Cauldwell got an aardman animation book in the po box so might recognise that :)

Tristan Lestavel-Entwistle

It might not be clear in this episode, but headcannon: Mole and Ratty are absolutely a couple.

Lucas

This tv show is cursed I cannot believe I even tried watching it lmao. Thank gods for your commentary.

Shane C

Mr. Toad one shot when?

TheTimePig

Now this is from my memory of The Wind in the Willows and the characters personalities: Caldwell has to be Toad (likes goofs, loves painting) Murph is Badger (wise and grumpy dad, gives good advice, compassionate) Em is the Rat (poet, song writer, kind, loves nature) Jake is the Mole (kind hearted, loves physical games, loves underground homes - dwarves anyone?)

Caitrin

My face hit my hands so fast when this went up, I’m delighted.

Rebecca Groves

And David Jason is voicing Toad AND Billy AND chief Weasel in that one scene!!

EggBilly

Jake lives the library scenes because that's what he does in between recording episodes.

Dallon Taylor

caldwell just so you know, "reject modernity embrace tradition" has conservative, 'traditional' origins. not a good phrase

Daniel Fenn-Tye

He probably knows, it also has made the rounds in satirical leftist meme circles

Lady Taco

I'm a Sagittarius and I definitely have Mr. Toad energy.

Aidan Warlow

Idle rich is just sitting on huge portions of land, no work. Professions like Dr and lawyer were considered beneath them

WitchKingofAngmar

What’s the stretch goal for the Mr.Toad one shot??

Aidan Warlow

We just have to ship them a case of brandy and some Prozac for Jake

Mae B

Mr. Toad one shot with the Triplets? I feel like Mr. Toad has triplets energy.

Joelle H

And this ladies and gents is why I'm a patron...

Alexandra Katsma

I’m a Sagittarius too and I might have a little Mr. Toad energy, but in the same way as Emily. I almost have a new hobby every month. Otherwise I feel like I’m nothing like Mr. Toad.

Macauly Leiher

Love that toad brought that normal clock on the roof when the roof itself had a giant clock on it

Ian Dack

Ah the 8bbc theme at the start 🥳

Canadian Schubert the Mushroom 🍄

Yo, Emily bringing up Frog and Toad FLOODED my brain with childhood. Loved those books. And upon further research, they were indeed totally gay.

Adam Gomez

Oh how the tables have turned on jake from gaslighting murph to now being the gaslighted

Sand Panda

If no one else said it: Nov 28th 2022 is a Monday.

Scott

Oh my goodness

Scott

I can’t wait till Em finds out that The Great God Pan, “Piper at the gates of dawn” makes an appearance in the book. These guys don’t live in the fae wild, but they definitely live close by.

Rory Leschinsky

Every time y'all start an episode with the 8-bit book club theme I have to go back and listen to it again.

Mortimer Lunch

Plz watch “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai” next

Marley

the 8 bit book club theme slaps harder than anything ever

Sara Tarnow

Thought you all would be cheesed to know that there's a musical called A Year with Frog and Toad. I got the soundtrack as a graduation present in 04 and it is so wholesome

Ryley D

8BBC Theme is so good and I just relistened to 8BBC too

OGBlake

Holy s*** Mr toad was born one day before I was rowdy

Caelan

If you want more insane British cartoons then you need to watch Watership Down, the original cut from 1987. I’m not sure it was popular anywhere else, and for good reason 😂 it had a U-rating, and so people thought it was fine for kids, but traumatised generations! It was played on tv in the middle of the day around Easter. Everyone thought it was just a cute bunny film, but nope, its horrifying 😂

Spag

I missed the 8Bit Book Club opening 😢, so good to hear it again

KCampbell

The last 10 minutes of the episode gave “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” a whole new meaning 😂

Alaina Moreno

As a Sagittarius, I feel slightly attacked…

Horny advocate for Welly's carnal audiobook

I had 3 videos growing up and Wind in the Willows was one of them, so I consider myself an authority, and I think you're all Mixes! Mr Toad is Caldwell's voice and goofs, with Em's chaotic enthusiasm, Mole is their friends-are-family gooey centre. Mr Badger is Murph's fatherly lawful order and Jake's desire to be the biggest, while Ratty is the cool-average-guy vibe of Jake and Murph's leadership... Most importantly this episode was a TV continuation from the movie! https://youtu.be/qNQ1kSfSIp4 Jake would probably still dislike it, but it makes MUCH more sense starting at the beginning and is more fun with the songs and duck dances. If nothing else, just watch 10 minutes from 18 minutes in (the film is a bit like 4 short stories) but THEN you'll get why Toad is a cross between Caldwell and Emily :) boop boop

Horny advocate for Welly's carnal audiobook

Arrr, good arguments... I still think Jake is more cool-guy Ratty and Emily is more chaotic-fun-time Mr Toad... but I totally see it. If they were doing the voices Caldwell would definitely come up with Toad's voice and Jake does sort of seem like the shy Mole trying his best to be adventurous.

Michael W

I'll just say that the best wind in the willows adaptation was the live action movie from 1996, called Mr Toads Wild Ride in the US. It stars most of the surviving Monty Pythoners, and still holds up to this day.

Chris P.

Horrified? I'm elated! I've Never heard anyone else mention that show. I was beginning to believe I made it all up

Candelario -Candyman- Ramirez III

Aside from his conversation with the bunny, my favorite joke was a sight gag. When he's on the roof and drops his clock, he's all bummed that he can't tell the time now. Then we see he's sitting next to a freakin' clock tower.

Candelario -Candyman- Ramirez III

Also, on the topic of killing Barney. I was reminded of one of my middle school teachers who had "Barney Carnage" on his computer and would let us play if we finished our work early. lol

AmberDextrous!

I love when we get episodes of 8 bag mixed bit club! Back in 1992 when I was 5, I was super into Barney. Barney lunch Box, Barney T shirts, Barney everything. My mom taught at a middle school, and so the bus would drop me off there after school, and there were these 2 8th grade boys that used to always make fun of me for liking Barney, and make the killing Barney jokes. And they would make me cry every single time. My mom would later tell this story as the moment she realized she was swearing too much around me because she walked into her classroom to hear these teenage boys mocking me with "Barney is for lite kids" and a tiny, cherubic, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little angel with tears running down her face screaming back "I am a little kid, you fucking assholes!"

Adah Kinzer

There was a clock tower in the background when Mr. Toad was on the roof

Vincent G

This is Jake's worst take ever and I've listened to early if I were you.

Graham

I went back and listened to 8-bit Book Club, and I really hope you guys do more adventure books

Welibwe

I absolutely loved this as a kid. It was one of my favorite movies. Watched all the time

Evan Cordero

I'm so excited for the Toadsgiving One-Shot 😆😆😆😆

Garga Lenoir

The boys : Actually Emily you are the Mr Toad! Emily : Rumble rumble rumble...

Garga Lenoir

It hurts a little that Murph doesn't follow it up by saying this is the only bag that makes you dumber.

MJMM

Yes to the Mr. Toad one shot

Simon Cuthbert

I’m having an emotional crisis because I was born in 1990 in the UK and in the deep recesses of my mind I suddenly remember watching this as a child. Did it mess me up? Maybe… the journey of self discovery continues

Clio

Mr Toad has the same birthday as me!!! No clue why I am this hype about it

Jake de Medeiros

If this better or worse than the advice that a lack of open sores means a person is clean

Iamtheskullboy

A one shot of Callie, Sul and Culdur in the Mr. Toad verse would be amazing lol

Erin Paravel

I was trying to think why Badger's voice was so familiar--IMDb reveals that he was the grumpy wiseman (who argued with his hat) in Labyrinth!

TheTimePig

I get you, initially I did think Em was Mr T, but the later comment in the ep about Caldwell being very toad-like swung it for me. Also hot frog Sol B

2026-09-05 07:00 Mr toad one shot please!!! Also, y'all should check out the Of Mice and Murder on Dimension 20 series. It has a great murder mystery noir Mr Toad meets Sherlock Holmes vibe. Its a different type/style of D&D and some people will really dig it.

emily’s sigh of resignation after being called mr toad is so funny

Same! I bring this show up and people look at me like I'm crazy. I started to think it was some sort of fever dream....
