I do think the MLM mechanic may have run into a number of above the table issues that could be solved with a good session 0 or even an X-card. The MLM premise combined with removal of agency could get too close for comfort for the actual player rather than character, and it sounds like that might have been closer to what happened because the player fully left the table permanently

As Murph said, a lot of these problems could and should be solved with conversation above the table but then Dungeon Court wouldn't exist so of course they have to rule in D&D terms

Also re God punishment/insta death and first sessions... I was getting memories of the first three black halflings live play and how Jasper basically offended a God. Instead of just killing him, Jeremy had the god role some persuasion checks and Unati (thankfully) had great diplomacy to assist.... But Jasper basically ended up playing a sorcerer with fish hands for a long time.... Which had huge consiquences for sematic spells until he got meta magic.... Also hilarious fish trial and law stuff that was just great.... It was a pretty awesome mini campaign 😂

I had a similar idea for a BBEG that walked the line between fantasy and reality on tapping into the ability to change rolls. I made him a Halfling Divination wizard with the Luck feat, who had several minions at his disposal. As a lair action, he could kill one of his own minions to gain another portent roll. The encounter was very interesting, playing with the idea of using magic to turn fate in your favor. It was challenging for the party but they liked it. The Cleric even got his robe that gives the wielder 1 portent roll per long rest. Good times.

if you asked me about the case with the MLM encounter, i’m fully on the player who left’s side. if you’re in a situation that you are uncomfortable in, especially when you’re supposed to be having fun, it is absolutely your right to up and leave (even if it makes you look like a dick)

I appreciate the ruling on my twin’s Shrek, but after I wrote that I did hear back from the rest of my party. It turns out my friends are just insane. The other two members of the party are a dwarf grad student cleric trying to find a PhD advisor and a pink tiefling artificer named Kirby with two Dragonborn adopted dads. So Shrek stands I guess, but I will be deadly serious with them

I have so many thoughts on case 1 ALL OF THEM ARE CALDWELL AS BEVERLY BEHAVIOR lol. Bev’s Javelin vs crock in moonstone, giant vs Bev in frost wind shoving things in his nose. The only success was the vomit berry on the snake at the crick in 1 round. A bouquet of roses for murph handling each one. And a plethora of roses to Caldwell! Best of luck to the dm in case 1. Your campaign will never be dull ^_^

oh boy, that egg argument...DnD provides a set of rules for combat. If you can describe how you can do it in real life, there's a check for it. I sincerely can't imagine prying someone's teeth open with one hand and putting an egg in with the other while in a combat. Just doesn't work in reality! Has to either be with stealth or deception! Like launch it into their mouth with a sling at disadvantage to hit for a called shot. or trick someone into eating it at dinner. I do like the command or suggestion option too.

You know the most important thing is that all the characters in a given party are about on the same level. Shrek in a party of serious D&D characters? Tonally dissonant, not good. Shrek in a party of other, equally ridiculous shitheads? You’re in the clear.

I had a player make Shrek and we made him a Genie Warlock in which Donkey was his genie giving him power. He played for a few games and practically committed suicide in combat because he didn't like playing D&D. He now lives in his beer bottle genie vessel that the party keeps with them.

Comment on the MLM encounter - getting "swept up" in an MLM irl can have devastating consequences, and it's often a traumatic experience for those affected. I would have been uncomfortable in this situation. My parents lost everything to an MLM, and my stepdad has never been the same. Now, my response as a player in this situation would have been to attack the non-cromancer, but that's because I react to MLMs with rage, not shame. It could be that the player was upset because they know this trauma or know someone who went through it. They probably should have spoken up, but they might not have been comfortable explaining why. The additional lack of player agency and choice could have made their experience even worse. Hence leaving the game permanently instead of talking it out.

As far as the encounter where the npc convinces the players’ characters to give them gold via wisdom save. Imagine your the only player that had to dump wisdom and you are saving up for full plate armor, and your character is not allowed to be mad at this guy because you gave it “willingly” and you feel unfairly targeted. Obviously DM did not intend to target this player with this encounter but you do have to consider what money means to the individuals playing. And what it represents. Before presenting homebrew mechanics.

The money one is just the pc being stuck up, if you were against a group of wizard thieves who cast command, or hold person guess what you just lost all of your gold for failing a saving throw, so to avoid any potential issues in the future will you can do is have one member of the pyramid scheme part of the darl cult, and he'll buy your blood ( blood of the willing and greedy ) so you can take damage and recoup the money you lost

IHearing Abria talk about a campaign where she let a player use an npc as a participant in a pedgent, sound an awfull lot like what she did for Orym/Liam in CR EXU. She even mentioned the player was a hanfling 😉
