Case #2 is very Call of Cthulhu. I realize this post is 7 years old but maybe the DM could have just made them roll a WIS save (for a brief period of madness) with decreasing difficulty as they spent more time in the magical realm.

Curse of Strahd is so lethal as it is that my party already made back up characters. Introducing madness would not bode well in a campaign where you have to complete simultaneous multiple quests and party's ability to navigate complex situations is requisite of success 95% of the time. Madness is a wildcard that would ensure certain failure both in quests and in the campaign at large. Also, I still don't understand penalizing the caster, there's a lot of magic in Barovia and this mechanic doesn't apply to anyone else in that world.

Obviously there’s a specific necessary context, but I think putting restrictions around skill checks can be called for if you have a big party where everyone likes to pile onto skill checks. If 7 characters make athletics checks to remove the boulder, and the 9 strength wizard hits the 18 on the dice and the barbarian hits a a 16 total, that’s a lot of extra hoops for a DM over the course of a session, let alone a campaign.

Just in case people care, if you're open to well-reviewed homebrew, on DMsGuild. The Pugilist is a great melee-based class, a lot like monk, but whoooole different vibe. More brawler, more boxer. I really recommended it. Wouldn't help with sneak attacking, but if you want something other than monk.

Does anyone else remember Ken Page's (the voice of Ooogie Boogie) musical number as King Crocodile about how badly he wanted to bang a dog? Edit: Caldwell remembered. He remembered Billy Joel in Oliver Twist as well. My man.

do you know what i think would be cute but would probably be way too much of an editing hassle? if the bottom left corner of the screen was the “plaintiff” and the bottom right was the “respondent” and as the case was discussed a d20 just slid across the bottom between them🤣 once a verdict was reached it would “land” on the winner with a nat20 (or, more appropriately, it would land on the loser with a nat 1) again, i assume that’s just a massive undertaking and not realistic but i just thought that would be a cute little animatic to see across the screen and the court deliberates? i LOVE the video version of dnd court (even if it interferes with the courtly image i have in my head lol) happy hearings!

All Dogs Go To Heaven is an amazing movie, those of you who haven't seen it should. SPOILER: I can't believe Murph didn't mention that the dog escaped heaven to help his friends. The line "you can never come back" still haunts me.

I do see where the DM is coming from, sometimes to prevent skill dogpiling I'll only let characters who are proficient make a check at all, and at that point letting everyone else roll with disadvantage is just a way to let them roll dice, as opposed to not roll at all. That being said I wouldn't implement that rule for all checks.
