Not to beat the dead horse but Glen's fascination with Moonshine from the stuff found in Cooter's stump really wonderfully captures his journey as a tragic and dark mirror of hers in C1. The contempt for his father felt resonant with some of the tensions that emerged with Moonshine and her father, but once again Crick hospitality and her growth post-Marabelle deepened her sense of what a family is and can be. Caldwell/Sol was spot on with that point that Glen is hollow, empty. Ironically his desire to forcibly seize the legacy of Atrioc, Moonshine, etc. will be quite upended if we end up learning that one of the people he manipulated the most and who made a choice to be with him was a descendant of Atrioc (Caly re: her mother's crest on Atrioc's). That Glen consistently refuses to see himself as relational because the idea that being reliant on others exposes his own weaknesses despite Moonshine coming into herself by embracing always the beauty and flaws in what it means to live in relation to others is honestly such phenomenal character storytelling. Idk y'all I just really love C3 and I didn't think I would because I felt C2 ended with so many more stories to tell. But I'm so excited for the next arc...

Went into a fugue state during this episode because THIS WEEK in my home game my character was in almost the exact same position as Calder. Where an extremely powerful bbeg was stuck in the character’s head, an egotistical secondary baddie does something that requires the player to release said bbeg from their mind, and the character has to sacrifice themselves (nonlethally) in order to save their friends. Granted in my case it was a vampire grandad and not an ancient giant king, but still the similarities were uncanny!

I’m an emotional wreck, this might be the best episode they’ve ever done. Flawless story telling and a masterclass performance by the Murph as his notes were all burning up in front of him to focus on the players, their characters, and how to truly collaborate at the table.

Okay ima say this felt super fucking railroady, Choo, Choo. My reasoning is After they fought a king you made them immediately go deal with the Puppet stuff and then immediately made them go deal with the Crick never giving a chance for a long rest even though they asked for it. Then they got forced into a surprise round Fight that opened with an over DC15 wisdom save ( thier worst trait as a party ). With multiple druids Having the eye bite spell to force Calder asleep. Like I understand that you wanted to get Glen the helm but come on. Again this is a fight that they got forced into by discovering Cooter on a Nat 20 insight check without being able to determine this was a trap after asking Explicitly? Finally where the fuck is bumpy, just ran to get help and never came, I know the rounds are short but idk man really good story but if liste n back I don't know how they could've avoided this.

I know this wasn’t how Murph saw things going; but this was absolutely a killer organic twist to the story. What happened to Calder is the kind of thing that normally is the backstory for a powerful NPC in a game. To get to actually have that happen to your character and play out the consequences? I’ve never been more jealous.

I feel like for stuff like this it’s important that the eps are edited. They could’ve explored different paths or discussed things more, but the moments might’ve been ultimately cut to make a better narrative overall.

This was such a cool way for the ep to go imho and I think will create such a complex ripple in the character's story. Also, when Cally became emotionless I thought she might turn into a Winter Eladrin on the spot, both reflecting her mother's more stoic demeaner as well as in response to Calder's wintery absence, Cally now in mourning for her friend. Looking forward to wherever this twist takes us.

Calder said he'd let Ultrus choose who he wanted to take over (Glen vs Calder) if he agreed not to harm Callie and Sol. With Calder being a half giant, Ultrus would absolutely want his body over an elf's.

Murph outright said on the short rest that he intended for the group to not win the encounter, and for Glen to get the helm and then they’d leave. And even if they were “railroaded”, they still managed to make a play that ruined Murph’s immediate campaign notes, so I don’t know what you’re complaining about

I lost my charecter to an unwinable situation that was unavoidable despite rolling a nat 20 and asking specifically if it was a trap ( what was the point of the check? ), but heat least I did something my dm didn't plan for. . . . I'm upset because I like Calder and the gang and I don't like that they were forced into this position. I still really like the story and murph but I can't remember another time when it felt like they're good action didn't have good consequences.

I get story comes first, but geez the railroading made this episode a lot harder to enjoy imo. Nat20’s not discovering a trap, surprise rounds, sleep spells and confusion spells. Plus they couldn’t sleep even when they asked. Just way too much.

Hey there! I'm finally catching up with the eps. I've been listening since the first campaign but this is my first time ever commenting. Though I am quite sad, I just gotta say that I honestly loved the direction this went! This feels like it's mirroring the Hardwon vampire arc but on a much grander scale. Let's be real, it's so like Jake to have his character make the sacrifice play that I kinda saw this coming. I really hope this leads into the crew trying to rescue Calder because I feel like the payoff is going to be amazing! We can't have a happy ending all the time, folks, the lower the lows then the higher the highs and all that. Don't listen to the people calling this "railroady", I didn't think it felt like that at all. Keep up the good work you guys! Fuck you, I love you, eat a rat.

I'm responding because I felt the same the first time I listened to the ep, and that felt kinda bad. On relisten, I've changed my mind, and would like to share why. A nat 20 perception getting the answer "the voice is not a fake voice" is buttoned up. Surprise rounds are as well: as long as their enemies rolled stealth higher than the PC's passive perceptions (which is not impossible), that's how that works. Not being able to sleep due to a narrow window of time is also legit. The spells also seem fair. This is not railroading, this is Murph being on the harsh side of following the rules, rather than on the forgiving side of following the rules. We all like to joke about him being a rules lawyer, but normally he's pretty forgiving in what he allows, he just talks like he's a hardass. Now, when things got serious, he actually was a bit of a hardass. But it's all within the rules, and storywise the enemies had time to prepare their trap.

OK, I was just waiting for the next long rest because I just KNEWWW it was gonna be the time that Calder rolled low enough to fail his saves against Ultrus, but the fact that it happened in the heat of the battle is just chefs kiss like really such a Jake move to sacrifice himself, I felt so many emotions during this episode! super well done, loved it.

Inexplicably they aren't even in it and I've gotta listen to an episode with Brandon Morphy, Emily Assford, Jake Hunkwitz, And Corebad Tourniquet? You'd think at least one of the main cast would have been in it but no. Really weird choice. But episode was good.
