Canid Duality

Quack, quack, quack Mr. Ducksworth.

A Brain In A Bucket

Caldwell: I don't think there's much oil in Scotland... Me, in Aberdeen: *blinks in North Sea Oil Field* (by which i mean, Uncle Scrooge could def be a Scottish oil baron. And also potentially an absentee highland landlord but that's a whole other canl of Scottish anti-capitalist worm-wives)

J E

I'm with Caldwell on the cliff fight, no way in hell are you clinging to a rockface after taking a hit

Colin Kilzer

Brian Fantana is probably a sorcerer lets be real

k.allen

But the D&D logic is that all the hits happen at the same time technically, so all of the hits land at basically the same time and then you fall. I think is the argument against

Andrew Yeager

Murph you calling Anchorman just fine is insane. It is a great, funny movie and deserves to be quoted. Of course, someone who doesn't like fun in D&D would not find anchorman funny. Brennan the fun D&D dad would find that movie funny.

Sean Thompson

The one shot the witch is dead specifies you can only talk to animals that are the same or similar species.

Anthony Spyropoulos

With the cliff fight, I’d compare it to grapple rules (you can release something you’re holding whenever, no action required). So unless the climber is under the surprised condition, or the bandits’ attacks were all readied action, I’d let the climber let go of the wall and drop

Pankkeli

As a European who practically grew up on Donald Duck magazines, I am astonished at the ignorance on ducklore they have. Scrooge is a self-made man!

Pankkeli

You can also drop prone at anytime, no action required, which I think could also be invoked here.

ACK

Scotland actually does have oil reserves! Most of Britain's North sea claims would go to them if they went independent.

Jack

Nooo I wanted a full duck deep dive! Give it to us in the mixed bag!

jbyrd

Stupid fact: Scrooge McDuck was based off of Andrew Carnegie

Crits

Murph I would like to personally thank you for once again standing up against the most annoying kind of white guy known to man

David Kuckuck

You can also drop anything you're holding in your hands at any time (like a rope or climbing handhold) no action required, which also reinforces the climber's opinion.

William beachus

My face when they are talking about the daylight pants and just Glossing over the part where daylight says it cannot be cast on a worn item

heavy harry

Emily asking the same question about "that escalated quickly" was so gosh darn psychedelic

Nick Lerche

Kept getting Good Will Hunting vibes on the first case deliberations: "it's not your turn. It's not your turn! ITS NOT YOUR TURN."

Driftwood747

Sparking the controversy, anchor man wasn't funny, over quoted, and doesn't deserve the respect it gets. come at me!

Maureen Tuohey

In defense of the GM from The Witch is Dead: the rules say " you can talk to animals of the same or similar species." Still a dumb rule, but the first time GM may have been trying to play by the book and took it too literally.

Ilana Galpert

I was expecting this duck hole to go way deeper. I'm surprised they didn't go into swamphole mcduck, or the duck that married a goose (I googled a picture I didn't know this off the dome, I'm not that cool)

Ilana Galpert

I looked this up, pankkeli, because it blew my mind. How useful if someone is firing arrows at you! Sadly it is not the case, though your dm might let you do it anyway

Ilana Galpert

Couldn't find confirmation for David's point either, unfortunately, though in that case I couldn't find anyone disagreeing, so it's possible! Simply because something is a "free" action doesn't make it available as a reaction, but the RAW doesn't say for sure either way on this one. Always so many interesting mechanic questions in dnd. Learn something new every day! 🙂

Nick Lerche

Daylight :" object that isn't worn or carried" y'all missed it!

Cameron A

I love lamp and I don't love Murph's anti-anchorman prejudice

Natural Dragon

Don’t let big anchor man and their legion of trolls intimidate you Murph! Stay strong brother!

Canid Duality

Con save (similar to concentration) after first hit to hold on or fall and choose to fail. Falling is forced movement so doesn't cost movement or provoke opportunity attacks which means you don't have to wait for your turn to start falling. Xanathar's Guide says you instantly fall 500 feet per round or 83 and a third feet per second, so I doubt they get more then two melee hits in including the initial hit. But you land prone taking 2d6 of damage and can't move until your turn so advantage against the player if the baddies have ranged weapons or ranged magic. However, depending if you fell into something like bushes might obscure or cover the player causing the roll to be flat or a perception roll and if passed advantage with high ground. That's my take at least.

Canid Duality

Anchorman 🫲🏾👈🏾 (4 life) They are the 🖐🏾 (4 horsemen) or you can 🙅🏾‍♂️ suck it Murph. JK more wrestling knowledge please.

Verdigree

The Daylight should never have been allowed to have been cast in the pants at all, it specifies you can't use it on things being worn or carried, only an object you are holding in your hands, so you don't run into this exact situation

Nathan Wilson

To the last writer with the cursed dice on Foundry - computers can't do perfectly random. They can get close, but if you analyze random rolls long enough, there will be a pattern. The only real way to get random is to roll your shiny math rocks. I'm waiting for a kickstarter developing physical dice that can send your rolls via Bluetooth to your computer, and they're even working on Foundry integration. It won't be open for pre-orders til December, but I suggest you check them out at least: https://gamewithpixels.com

Ian juarez

Yeah they literally read the spell description out loud and miss that xD

Eric Keller

When my oldest was 8 he made my wife a salad to eat. When my wife took a bite it was hot. My son heated it up in the microwave. Said "I wanted the cheese to melt."

tacticalgrandma

Maybe this is desperate terrible roller conspiracy theorizing but I also rolled 5 nat 1s in a row on Foundry!! It’s during my character’s arc too. Using this as evidence to my dm

Mitchell Kilgour

This episode left me in a glass cage of emotion, you guys missed the mark here😓

MaryKathryn Overstreet

For the dice Christ confessional, I want to say that my group also uses foundry, and there was a session where our rougue ould only crit. Both failures and successes. After about an hour into the session our DM had her role 20 times in a row. And she only rolled ones and 20s, but definitely way more ones than twenties. We ended up having her refresh her page. And we all loved out and loved back in. And then everything worked fine. I just wanted to let you know that there ARE glitches in "randomized" computer rolls.

Clever Innuendo

Nevermind being able to rip pants off, Daylight doesn't actually count as 'Day' light. It should just be called Bright Light.

Alexander Gillis

I was curious about that game "The witch is dead" they were playing and I found a PDF of it. It is a one page small game a la Honey Heist. The language barrier thing is the very last sentence. Definitely a weird rule though.

EmperorGreed

that rule is clearly to indicate you can't talk to humans, not that you can't talk to each other

Lovecraftian

There's no oil in Scotland? *looks at the North Sea oil reserves*

Rickety Cricket

Murph’s HATRED of one of the greatest films of our time (Anchorman) truly knows no bounds

mumbo

I was looking for this comment, lowest level spell for real sunlight is 5th and that’s if you’re using xanathar’s

Brokennoodles

Phew, caught up just in time for the New York show on Saturday. Coming over from England to see it, looking forward to it!

Edmund O'Neill

Came here to say this. The “Daylight” spell is irrelevant for vampire spawn

Chase

Notoriously, it also isn't Sunlight and has no effect on vampires. Super common mistake though because the name of the spell is misleading.

Sean

How DARE YOU say that you hate the Anchorman movies, Brian. How dare you...

Noah James Perito

I just need everyone to know I really was obsessed with the mcduck family tree when I was a kid and this was one of the moments where I really wished I could be on this show

Gearbox

Ah, D&D court. The only show where a pc can steal someone's entire crossbow from their back with a free sleight of hand check but a monster can't slash off someone's clothes with two whole attacks.

Candelario -Candyman- Ramirez III

Forgive me, honorable Justices and sub-honorable bailiff, but I think you're wrong. I've never fully disagreed with a unanimous ruling before. The player just wanted to *let go* of the cliff. No movement, no pushing off, no object interaction. Just release their grip. I think this is just a more physical version of maintaining concentration on a spell. RAW, you can drop concentration anytime, no action required. So just "drop concentration" on your grip. This was just a unique 1 in 1000 situation where simply releasing your grip is actually useful to avoid getting wrecked. Whether it ends up helping the player depends on whether or not they were surprised and how close the attackers were when they started their turns.

Ebony-Rose Ellis

I have nm embarrassing confession that I was confused about emily's confusion about the duck tales brothers because I remember her many episodes talking fondly of the mighty ducks movie and in my mind I thought mighty ducks was a duck tales spin off movie and I have thought that my whole life

Pagos, Self-Proclaimed Fae King, Now with Real Musical Improv Action

What Emily suggested is a saw trap for character sheets. Hello players, I want to play a game. In the past, you have treated the matters of life and death, as though they were a children’s plaything, ignoring them when they no longer seem fun to you. But I guarantee you the rules of life and death are very very serious. You’ll notice your character sheets are hooked up to fishing wire. If you drop down to zero, HP, your character sheet will be hung by the ceiling. If you fail your three death saves, your character sheet will be dropped into a flaming pit below. Make your choice.

Morgan Croft

I recently rewatched anchorman bc it keeps coming up on the short rest and all i can say is Murph is right. Shit just doesn't hit like it did 19 years ago. And yes, anchorman is 19 year old now. I feel old too lol.

Pip

Haha came here just to say that

Dr. Bearkele

I am fully with you. I tried to do a rewarch recently and I was just like... wow this moving hinges all its hilarity on sexism, randomness, and making fun of a disabled guy. 100% does not hold up (though it was funny to be like..."oh shit, that's where that line got famous" about two thousand times, haha)

Dr. Bearkele

Running that was my first experience as a GM! Very fun and easy for people to get into character. I had one player who rolled a toad whose spell was cleaning, so they had a good time spending the session complaining about their sentience and how awakened life sucks when all you can do is clean x)

Dr. Bearkele

How do all dice hate me then, digital and IRL? - the Dice Christ apostate 😅 (seriously, I play Strahd with a friend who is also cursed and I think we both hit once in a 7-round combat, this is my life and it is hell)

Dr. Bearkele

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Dr. Bearkele

Okay yes, different Will Ferrel movie. I unreasonably assume if you know one of his quotes, you know them all

Dr. Bearkele

You have my sword, my bow, and my axe in this battle. Funny in 2004, pretty awful by today's standards

Dr. Bearkele

I feel like his family's wealth in Scotland is at least a little bit explained in The Life and Times of Scrooge (which Finns are obsessed with - fun fact, Tuomas Holopainen of the internationally famous metal band Nightwish wrote a whole album about that book). I only read it in Finnish and I'm shaky at best in this language, so I can't give more detail...

Dr. Bearkele

I have to say, Brennan is pretty woke and that movie is very much not...

Morgan Croft

right? I think the only scenes I still like were the fight between all the new anchors and when Ron Burgundy plays the flute. And any scene with Baxter lol

Jess Mosher

Came here to say this lol

tonytheoneandonly

I'll say in the last case/confession that digital dice are not truly random. Digitizing randomness is really difficult so there are only best approximation of randomness. It's possible however foundry was having some sort of error that wasn't allowing it to consider numbers over 5. I motion that digital dice are inherently not true dice, only approximations and in times of doubt a real physical dice should be used for transparency.

Dr. Bearkele

A little update on that bc I had my partner explain it to me, but Scrooge's family were wealthy land barons in Scotland, but Scrooge himself made his own fortune through good business, like during the gold rush in the Klondike and other ventures. The gold rush is also where he had his heart broken!

Matthew Cagle

About the Anchorman one shot: I think a fun compromise would have been for Brian Fontaine to die. Then as his character is dying, Brian's twin brother Ryan ( having been left a note that Brian would be late for drinks and where he woul be instead) shows up to the location in time to cradle his brother for his last words and inherits Sex Panther. Player then plays the game as Ryan to avenger his brother with the same character sheet. Feels like something that would happen in the Anchorman movies but still have character death without having to make a new character sheet.

David Kuckuck

Unfortunately I think we're both referencing old Jeremy Crawford tweets from when his advice was implied to be official, before being clarified to just advice. I should probably looked it up first.

Kenzi Perkins

“Taylor’s watching” god I love caldwell 😂😂 the energy in this is wild

hey!

okay about the letting go not being allowed off your turn, isn’t concentration allowed to be done any time not on your turn so if you’re concentrating on holding on couldn’t you just stop? especially if being shot would cause you to fall anyway, a la being hurt would cause you to lose concentration???

Mason Hogle

If you listened to the argument - no because its a slippery slope of "unless you have a mechanic for a reaction to do so, you cant do it". You can tell your dm all day that you can kill someone in one hit with a headshot (and in reality you could), but thats not dnd. You gotta roll to hit and do damage. Its just the rules

hey!

do you neg people in comments to make yourself feel better or is it an attention thing

hey!

I completely agree with this, it wasn’t mentioned here but every game i’ve ever played in has had risk of being made to fall as a result of taking damage while holding on to something. By the same logic if you can get hurt enough to have to let go couldn’t you just stop actively putting that effort in (concentrating) and fall down? The argument for “not a written reaction so it becomes a slippery slope” is completely true and understandable but if i were dming in a way where i could shoot my players off a cliff i would also allow them to just let go if not as a free action (like ending concentration) as a reaction at least

Smitty

To the Cursed Foundry player, while you can't pitch cursed digital dice across the room, you can go into the Foundry settings and change your dice outline, text, texture, color, etc and do a symbolic pitch. It's worked for me before

Parker Doole

Oh my gosh as a KC Cheifs fan and a Swifty hereing Caldwell shout out Taylor watching you throw the football is so exciting.

Matt Davis

Just a heads up - this one isn't in the D&D Court collection currently.

Lilli of the bog

I just feel like the counterpoint to that is shut up nerd slippery slopes don't exist you can say no to ridiculous stuff but still allow reasonable stuff.

Marc Bollinger

Years later, when I needed this comment - here you are.

Compound27

Emily's lack of memory is the best reoccurring bit that's not a bit. And for the Anchorman case, it would fit the universe if his twin brother came to avenge his dead brother so he can still play. I swore Emily said piss shit nut and throw for the throwing pants lol classic 1, 2 & 3

Ogliara

Don Rosa's series on Scrooge's life is the greatest comic ever created, change my mind
