Gotta say. The title already hooked me in.

I stopped my other podcast as soon as I saw this drop. Suck it other podcast!

Was about to go to bed but it can wait 48 minutes

Babe wake up. New Jakeout needs to be dined on

Next thanksgiving is a jakeout in my house

That second DM is awesome. For inconsequential fights or smaller beasts that are meant for leveling up and taking up resources, it makes total sense. It’s not something you’ll do for bigger fights, but it’ll be great for some mid-tier baddies. Making each player feel special during the fight is often so difficult, and I’m sure it’s been happening for a while and they never noticed so it’s worked well before.

David K

The DM in the case about removing stakes by not using HP, as a DM I intentionally put bad info in the "hidden parts" behind the screen, like if I share a picture of my screen I'll put fake encounters up. But I think the combats still have stakes cause your PC's still have a limited HP

Blubread00

Wanted to do the math on how “fast” the monk was going to see if it really would have hurt safely assuming the monk traveled 140 feet in that round of combat lasting 6 sec they only would have been running at roughly 15.5mph that would be roughly a 5.2sec 40yrd/36.5m dash for reference the average male can run that in about 5.6 so Murphs boxing comparison isn’t too far off the mark

Cameron Davis

With the Tabaxi Monk story, I was on the DM’s side up until he said he got “overruled” by the party. Listen dude, I know they’re your brothers but you absolutely have to have a backbone. There should NEVER be an “overruling” of the DM. YOU’RE the one who overrules. YOU’RE the one in charge of the campaign. YOUR word is law. And now you’ve set the precedent for your brothers that if they don’t like a decision you’ve made for YOUR campaign, that you’re enough of a pushover that they can just say “nah fuck that man” and get away with just about anything they want. Your players were wrong, that’s not how that works, and as Emily perfectly said, only the DM gets to decide what “Rule of Cool” is, players don’t. But I’m sorry man, you let yourself get rolled over and for that you’re guilty.

Cain

I agree with the Nat 20 conversation and the philosophy but I want to point out that 10 people rolling does not mean there is a 50 percent chance to roll a 20. Each roll is independent of the other. A number would have to be taken out if it's already been rolled once for that to be the case. Otherwise by the same logic, 20 people rolling will guarantee a 20, which isn't true.

wick

The character going up to everyone trying to get persuasion checks with everyone helping him is just Jens lmao

Luke Swannell

In the case of the infuriating imp, I would encourage the DM to begin adding some kind of time constraint that prevents the player with the Imp from being able to take a short rest. For example, if it’s a cave, the DM could narrate that they have hostages in the cave, are conducting a ritual that is almost complete or the cave is deep and the party risks losing a lead if they rest. Alternatively, the DM could begin adding other, more ethereal things (additional quests, opportunities, information) that the party missed out on while all the short rests took place.

M Bee

I feel like 500HP DM person needs to consider that one set of enemies doesn't reveal a DM's full philosophy, and also that "the party has fought enough for this particular situation" arguably *IS* a set point in the mind of a DM that good & considerate. A boss fight might be firm numerical setpoint/party balanced vs. a gangfight mid-travel might be "if the dice totally fk the group in this random encounter, I can pivot it off the cuff into a bigger problem, but not a TPK." Basically, they shouldn't assume they know more than they actually do just from that one glimpse behind the screen. PLUS a wily DM very well might have changed the HP so the group wouldn't know any more than what was being shown. It's a very 90s sitcom thing: Every step of extrapolation introduces greater risk the situation is not at all what someone believes.

Eating Jake Out made me so several double takes

ACK

Screaming "CHOKE ON THEMMM!" 'Day of the Dead' style as the haters tear me into bite sized pieces.

Steph

The dagger was amended to not allow revives if I stabbed someone the same or higher level as me shortly after this. I did use it before every long rest to stab a bug and “finally get some goddamned sleep”. If 100 trees are burned down everytime I do that then there’s a lot less trees somewhere.

Murph

“Rats ride loose but so too do weasels” that’s in the bible I think

Tim

The Dungeon Court theme song is so good I hear the “dungeon, dungeon” part whenever I watch Law and Order.

Koty Kai

I actually had an encounter where my players tried to persuade some kobolds not to fight. I told them they had to succeed on 3 persuasion checks since the players started the fight, and they thought it was a fun solution to avoid combat and they got some great info from the kobolds

Tim

On the monk getting more damage for running - this is what the Charger feat is for.

bk

This is the funniest ep of all time

Makeitsweat

I do the same thing as the 2nd DM but the hp is more just a suggestion. Its not a hard number. I let the enemies die when it seems right but typically pretty close to the original number set. The solution to the imp problem is your character just doesn’t wait. You start exploring, like “we don’t have time to wait for your imp”

Thomas Hegarty

Daniel Kwan from Asians Represent! Doesn’t use hp at all and operates the same way as the second DM. I believe he is more transparent about that upfront.

Banalan

Midwest Kenku, my favorite music genre

UrBoyDakota

I actually have a homebrew momentum mechanic for my players. You gain an extra 1d6 of damage for every 10 feet moved, but the attacker then has to make a Constitution save. The DC equals have the same extra damage dealt or 10 (similar to concentration save) and if they fail, they take the extra damage as well and avoid it on a pass. High risk high reward maneuver.

Daniel Drapp

I think the auto kill dagger would be super cool if it locked both souls in the dagger to war forever against each other, but if you resurrect one soul it raises the other one as well

Declane Gilhooley

My players count damage and it really bothers me but I can't stop them from doing it though

Maximus Awesomeness

I watched the iron claw with my brother I cried three times

Obs

Squelch the little weasel

You can’t roll and drive on the I-95 👍🏻

They stumbled on the Kobold Rail Gun method, good job! That’s a milestone for any group.

The Lorists will be my indie TTRPG indie-wave band

RavensBinch

Sorry for hater-rocking honestly I just wanted an objection moment 🤣

Liz M

Liz here from the confessional! Thank you for the laughs and the PSA, and we’ll see what my boyfriend says tomorrow! UPDATE: I didn’t mention the church ruling yet (he is not caught up on episodes) but the d20 was gone when he drove me to the train station this morning. I said, “Oh hey, where’s your d20?” He said “it lives in my fanny pack now.” So, solved! If we end up in the crosswalk it will be due to staring at the WWE building, not a nat 1.

Nathan Wilson

Yes! To explain it for anyone who doesn't know: The kobold rail gun (or peasant rail gun as I've heard it) comes from that fact that handing something to someone in D&D 3.5 was a free action (5e kinda shored it up by declaring players only get one object interaction per turn) So then, if you've got 4 creatures who can stand at 4 corners of a 5 ft square, they can pass a rock between them infinitely, because it's a free action. And then because of physics, when they release the item it will have so much momentum it will go far and kill enemies. Most DM's outlaw this interpretation of the rules.

Spoon_the_anonymous

Less than two minutes in and we got some real hot boys energy some real bonfraire behavior

squalor and splendor

Dagger: kills anything with one hit but you cannot be revived, your soul is destroyed and used for the energy for the dagger. The dagger then is destroyed

Kaggi

The imp story is like that player is trying to save scum and lmfao

Cheese of the Lake

My last campaign morphed into a text only campaign on discord and it was the worst! We met weekly before the pandemic but during lockdown we went from video and then to text only. Everything was slow paced as we had to wait for each other to type and eventually other players started doing other things like laundry and video games. It eventually dissolved and fizzled out.

heaps and heaps of worms

On the topic of the DM who is suspected of only killing monsters when they feel it's a good time, I feel that that is a violation of concent. That DM is lying to their players about how the game works, and that is very not okay.

heaps and heaps of worms

I think it's not okay to play the game by different rules and not tell the players. It's a violation of trust.

heaps and heaps of worms

I super disagree. It's a fine tactic, *if you tell your players*. It is not okay to play the game by different rules without the players knowing

thiswayjose

What’s the different rule? Do you generally know the monster’s HPs? This isn’t a game with just a single win-condition, it’s collaborative for having fun as a group. If you don’t view it as DM vs Players, it’s fine. The DM isn’t doing it to kill their players, they want to increase stakes and also potentially not turn every fight into a slog. Having the HP be malleable allows them to create tension when it’s needed and give space for the players to do cool things!

1Lonelybaguette

On the topic of the extra damage for tabaxi sprinting, using momentum as a reason for extra damage doesn't even work here anyway. It's not like the enemy ran that far and then stopped moving, they're still in the process of running.

Dag Swanials

Will the full poster set be available again soon?

Classic Vlasic

I agree with it not okay. Only thing I can think of that makes it okay is if it autofills the HP on the form and the DM keeps up with HP pen and paper? I doubt that's the case but it would explain why it was all the same.

Declane Gilhooley

Have you guys thought about doing more with Pathfinder 2e? It would be really cool to hear how the PCs get on

Jake McConnell

Took me this long to realize that Denny is just the camp counselor who lost the 7 digimon kids…. 8 Bit Book Club - Digimon Manga: 42:20

"Jakeout" is living in my head rent free omfg

Dag Swanials

Been listening to Emily's music on here and Spotify and she's amazing! 👏👏👏 Ill Luck Henry made me cry. I know I'm a bit behind the times, but does Emily release her music still? The newest I see is from 2021?

Penny Garbo

I almost rear ended someone when Jake said stinky poopy I laughed so hard

David

So…why not just say you’re releasing on Friday? Then you’ll be ahead of the game.

Taylor Walters

they have lifes too man 🙏 wouldn't wanna rush the editing and have a lower quality ep

David

I wasn’t saying they should rush it. I was saying the opposite. 🙏

Kathryn G.

What the monk could have done is grappled, cause a running tackle actually makes some sense, opposed to a running punch. As a rugby-obsessed DM that would have been rewarded by me immediately. They caught the break away.

Blue Oak Woodland Wizard

Idk why but picturing Murph & Emily’s deliciously absurd running desk scenario had me laugh-crying and nearly pissing myself at work. Five stars!

James Cherenzia

See now I'm just picturing how much jousting would be improved if it was people trying to deck each other with boxing gloves going full speed on horseback

FregLover

I think you can in Illinois ;)

jawnster

Every single one of my naddpod episodes cut early and abruptly

heaps and heaps of worms

The different rules is that the DM is deciding when the monsters die. Players don't usually know the HP, but they usually believe the monsters *have* HP. If you're running the game in that different of a way, you have a moral obligation to tell your players. It's scary that you don't see that.

Cory

I guess that might depend on whatever chicanery WotC tries to pull next with the OGL.

Blue Bee

"The enemies had 500 hp and we were only level 12" just last week I had a session where our group of 5 level 4 pcs did a combined 180 damage to a boss over the course of 2 rounds, each of those enemies at level 12 having their hp pumped up to 500 to deal with pcs with a bunch of magic items and 6th level spells is totally within the realm of possibility.

Summer Tribe

that scouting one is fucking whack. that is 100% the DM's fault for not hurrying shit along. the DM should either be disallowing it to move the game along or acknowledging the pattern and simply skipping the parts of the game made irrelevant by this travel style. how are they blaming a player for having a good and valid strategy? especially given that exploration is such an underdeveloped part of 5e

Kevin Engelkamp

I want into the text only political campaign real bad

Jason Sherman

I think for rules as written during combat you naturally have disadvantage on persuasion checks, and I think you are only supposed to make one persuasion check on an NPC per 24 hours. Idk if that is per character or per party. This is in regards to them joking about rolling every turn during a boss fight to win by changing the boss’ personality.

LS

Rule of cool is like at Disneyland having 'magic moments'. you don't demand them, it happens to you by others.

Lindsay S

The text-only campaign and being yelled at for not knowing all the lore reminds me of the mid-2000s Neopets role playing boards.

Paul McCubbrey

there is a rule for making a stronger attack with a running start. it's called the charger feat.

Love hearing about naddpod fans also in Stamford! Shoutout from exit 8
