You can see previous posts from the "lost comic" series here. This comic was drawn in 2016. As the first panel summarizes, people were starting to worry that Modern was getting too expensive, so they were looking for an alternative nonrotating format. To meet this need, a format called Frontier started gaining popularity, which began mostly in Japan. I was always a little skeptical of the format because it was dominated by cards from the Khans of Tarkir era Standard, which were a bunch of expensive "good stuff" decks because the mana was so excellent. Anyway, once WotC announced Pioneer, there was no need for Frontier anymore and it died away.

I remember telling people that if there's a format that used cards from Ixalan and after, it should be called Buccaneer!

I remember Frontier and people talking about how there were no broken decks in the format. No broken decks in a new format is something I laugh at. Put enough money on the line that people actually put in the work to see if they can break your format before making a claim like that please XD

As a side note, I played my first games ever of Pioneer about 2-3 days ago.

Yeah, even pauper has been broken at times when there's enough focus on it!

Cardboard Crack

Well, how did it go? What did you play? Don't leave us hanging!

I played Monogreen Devotion. It's what I wanted to play when it was first announced. I had a physical deck for about a year, never played a single game and ended up taking it apart again. So I played it on Arena, and despite it not being a meta deck anymore, I am having decent success with it. Surrak, the Huntmaster monogreen Devotion stompy was one of my favourite commander decks ever and I hope to be able to put it together again. I've currently got it arena since Surrak was printed in Foundations. I have hundreds if not 1000+ hours experience playing that deck so the monogreen devotion deck in Pioneer felt right at home (unlike the izzet aggro deck I've been playing in standard and failing horribly with).

That's awesome to hear. I feel like it's a good sign about a eternal format when you can perform decently with a non-meta deck that you know really well.
