One of the earliest things I learned about writing comics is to always write down your ideas as soon as you have them. You may think that you'll remember them later, but you inevitably forget if you don't write them down. I've learned that the hard way too many times.

Often, I'll just takes notes on my phone when I think of something. This can be just fragments of ideas, and then once I have time to sit down, I can piece it into a comic. For this particular comic, I was working with the idea of a prerelease for a while, as you can see from my notes:

You can also see that the monster punchline was one of the first things I thought of. Eventually, I realized that it didn't have to be a prerelease, it could just be a random draft. It's funny how long it can take to get past your initial concept, even when it's clearly not necessary for the joke you're aiming for.

My friend and I have a box we call a Prerelease Kit. Inside is sleeves and 10 of each Basic land type. Sadly, we forgot our kits when going to MagicCon Vegas, and had to visit the land stations. I accidently took a deck worth of lands back home with me.

Thanks. I always forget I have a bunch of notes and notebook sketches I could be sharing. I’ll try to do it more!

This is a great idea. I have a deck box and sleeves from Hareruya that I use for my drafts. I keep meaning to also keep some of my favorite lands in there, but I always forget!

I’m so sad that I forgot mine for Vegas 😭 (I’m the friend he’s talking about, haha)

At some point I decided I had too many basics lying around. Since then I always take 15 of each to the prerelease and leave them at the store.

I have a deckbox with 12-ish sleeved basics of each type, some tokens and 23 empty sleeves. Been working great for me the past 10 or so years ^^
