One of my favorite callbacks from the new Mystery Booster spoilers is Arzakon, who was the final boss in the MicroProse MTG video game back from 1997. I used to love that game. If you don't know, the main gameplay was that you were a character who would walk around from village to village. And when you would stop at a village, you would challenge another wizard to a game of Magic. If you won, you could add to your collection (through ante of course).

What made the game especially fun is that you could build some truly degenerate decks because you only had to have 40 cards and you could have up to 4 of any card. I wish I had some of my old decks lists! Just off the top of my head, a typical deck list might be

4 Mox Sapphire4 Mox Jet4 Underground Sea4 Black Lotus4 Dark Ritual4 Timetwister4 Ancestral Recall4 Time Walk4 Contract from Below4 Underworld Dreams

You get the idea. Super fair, right? You don't know true brokenness until you've played with Contract from Below.

The final boss Arzakon in particular had a starting life total of 400. Whereas you still started at like 20. So you had to go through some insane loops or focus on trying to deck him instead (and his deck had well over 100 cards).

Just writing this out has me itching to play again. It must be available online somewhere, right?

There are so many cool callbacks in this set. The ones that made me smile the most were Grakk, whom I immediately recognised from the tempest/8th ed pacifist flavour text. And Davvol. A friend of mine's favourite flavour text was Carnival of Souls, and I know seeing it would have made him so happy. In addition to this, Nephelim Commanders have been asked for basically since the inception of Commander, and it's so cool to have a Battle of Wits commander too. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Uncle Istavan <3

I know Wizards cares a lot less about stores and collectors when it comes to collectability. But I wish they would replace the planeswalker symbol on reprints with something else. Just so that we have a way to identify MB1, MB2, Secret Lair Commander Decks and Mystery Booster Commander cards from each other /sigh...

It took me a moment to notice, but I love that the nephilim commander can be cast for any of the 5 nephilms mana cost in case you want to build around just one

I love most of the callbacks, and use of old art that didn't get a card. I'm not really a fan of the depictions of some of the characters in the Onslaught cycle story, though. Sash and Waistcoat in their cockroach form is not what I think of when I think of them.

Yes, that’s the perfect kind of thing that takes me a second to get but when I do it’s so satisfying.

Cardboard Crack

Yes, I have a feeling Battle of Wits plus Yorion decks will be popular!

Cardboard Crack

Yeah, I recognize some of the art from old Duelist magazine articles. The cockroaches are definitely much more cartoony than I envisioned them!

Was quite excited to play, but lost my first game to the UI being so unintuitive it didn't let me block a 17 power wolf and win on the crackback because it skipped through my blockers, so... that's enough for today!

Yeah, it takes a little while to get used to the interface. On my Mac, two cursors appear, so I have to make sure to follow the white one and not the black cursor. Also, when buying cards for gold, the yes/no option doesn’t show up. So you just have to hit “y” or “n”
