I think Wizards is trying to go wide instead of cultivating its fan base the way it used to. It may increase sales in the short term, but how many of the new players will stick with the game remains to be seen.

I agree. Honestly, even though I disagree with their current strategy, if WotC wants to go for the quick dollar now instead of cultivating life long fans, that's their choice. The part that really upsets me is that they made a promise of a certain amount of prize support, which players have been planning their lives around. And now to turn around and change the prizes right before the tournament, and even try to do it in a really quiet way, is just inexcusable.
