This is another continuation of my 'thank you' drabbles - this is Crowsister's, and you can find the original already on here too.

The king strode into his chamber and tossed his ruby-studded crown onto the bed as though it were a piece of screwed up paper and no more.

“Tough day?” you asked, emerging from the balcony of his underground home where you’d been watching the lava flows from a safe distance.

He strode across the room towards you, towering over you with his glowing veins of magma in his basalt-black skin, and as his glowing eyes met yours, he rumbled, “Awful. I’ve got complaints from every quarter, and no matter how much time I give them, it never seems to be enough.”

He took your face in his palms and rested his warm forehead against yours, exhaling softly. He smelled slightly of sulphur and of the earth, but by now that had become the smell of home to you. You took his huge, craggy hand in yours and led him out onto the balcony. There, you had collected a small feast for him, and he smiled when he saw your efforts. The things he ate were not the same as you did, and you had gathered a bowl of purest coal for him, and even a diamond which you’d bought at the underground market with the money he’d given you to buy something for yourself.

When he saw it, glimmering in the intense, orange glow of the lava outside, his yellow eyes went wide and he growled. “I told you to find something for you…” he snarled.

“I did,” you said. “I found it, and decided I would get more pleasure out of seeing you relaxed and well fed than I would lugging that great stone around on my neck for the rest of my days… besides… you’re the king under the mountain - you can just rustle up another diamond if you really want me to wear something like that… right?”

With a chuckle, he nodded and hugged you close. “Thank you. I needed this. You’re very kind to me.”

“You need someone to take care of you, silly,” you said, swatting his huge, boulder-like shoulder playfully. “Otherwise you’d crumble to dust or just burn out…”

“True,” he admitted, popping one of the pieces of coal into his mouth as though it were an hors d’oeuvre at a fancy party. He kissed you on the top of the head and rumbled, “I’d be lost without you.”
