Prompt: If you are up for it I would be happy with something about a familiar...? Perhaps their thoughts in the moment when they are finding their human?

I stretched my back out and groaned. It had been a while since I’d been called upon to join with a human with magical abilities, and honestly, I wasn’t sure there was anyone left who knew the incantations powerful enough to ‘request’ me.
And yet, here I was, in some little apartment somewhere in the middle of a small town, looking in at a human who seemed desperately alone.
With a sigh, I pushed the door open and they startled. I was large for a black cat, so obviously not a mundane creature.
“Are… Are you…? Did it work?” ‘my’ human stuttered. Of course, I still had to accept the contract.
I approached and wound around booted legs, purring softly as I connected with their energy. Yes, this was good energy. I liked the feel of it, like warm hands down my spine, and I let it permeate my being, reaching into me before I decided to fuse my own energy with it.
“Maybe?” I purred.
“You can speak?”
I laughed softly and sat down on my haunches, regarding this new human with my large eyes. I flicked an ear and stared.
My gaze was met, which was a pleasant surprise for once, and I nodded. “Yes, I think I would like to be your familiar, human,” I said. “Of course, I’ll need to read a full contract before I sign anything, but I think I like you already.”
“Contract?”
I rolled my eyes and stared up again. “Don’t tell me you haven’t prepared a contract for me?”
“Uh…”
“Oh, so you thought you’d just bind a spirit and that was it?”
“I… the grimoire says…”
“‘The grimoire says’,” I quoted flatly. “Of course. Well, let me talk you through how it should be done, and then we can see where we are, alright?”
I had no objections to partnering with someone green and new. On the contrary, I rather liked the idea of sculpting someone in their magical training, but I was an old soul, and old souls do everything by the book. Well, maybe not by the dusty old book that was open on the floorboards, but by the traditional book, at any rate.
