“Skandi!”
The shout across the yard made the piebald centaur jump and shy a few paces forewords, his huge hooves clattering on the concrete before he reined himself in and laughed softly at his own scardy-cat reaction.
“Yeah?” he called, turning as he recognised Elissa’s voice.
“You’ve got a visitor,” she said as she skipped into the yard, the massive, hulking form of Khuruz behind her. The orc had a garland of summer flowers around the top of his dark head, the delicate petals somehow softening the harsh scars on his face. “And he’s got a present for you,” she added, yanking Khuruz by the wrist and into the farmhouse. “He’s up by the orchard gate. Better hurry!”
Skandi’s heart leapt wildly, but he grinned, thinking he knew what was going on. Making his way through the farmyard at a pretty loud and quick trot, he pushed open the five-bar gate at the base of the fragrant apple orchard, and then saw who was waiting for him at the top gate.
Grinning broadly, he tipped forwards into an easy canter, eating up the distance between them, and Mikken opened the top gate as he barrelled towards it. Mikken’s comparatively delicate hooves tiptoed back out of the way, and he let the gate slam shut on its own as Skandi halted, churning up the turf.
“Hi,” the centaur said. “I d-didn’t think y-y-you were c-co-coming over until t-to-tomorrow.” He’d grown more comfortable with his stammer around Mikken in the months that they’d been dating, especially Mikken never showed any sign of impatience or ridicule.
Mikken held out the bunch of purple and yellow dahlias to him and said, “Wanted to surprise you. Plus my store of kisses is running low. I need some more.”
Skandi’s heart skipped another few beats, and he stepped forwards, taking Mikken’s tanned, freckled face in his big, rough hands, savouring the elegant lines of his jaw as he slid his touch over him, tucking wayward curls behind delicate ears.
He bent to kiss him and moaned softly as Mikken's soft lips met his, flowers all but forgotten in his hand.
