“You home?” you called, knowing that the house would be dark whether Ptolemy was here or not.

In answer, a piano played from the back of the house, a slow, thoughtful melody, and you smiled.

He knew you were there, but he chose to answer in the form of music instead.

You moved through the house and when you arrived to find his long, thick, sandy tail coiled beneath him, the multitude of snakes in his hair swaying softly to the soporific music, you looped your hands around his bare waist and hugged him.

His fingers continued to move across the keys. “How was work?” he asked without fluffing a note.

“Meh,” you replied. “I’m glad to be home.”

Improvising an ending to the sequence, he turned and reached his hands for your shoulders. His eyes didn’t meet yours, and with any other gorgon, you might have been a little nervous, but with him, you knew his empty gaze presented no danger. Ptolemy had no sight in his eyes now. Glaucoma had robbed him of that, but he taught music at the local university, and when your day was done and you came home to him, he was the best partner anyone could ever have wished for.

“Dinner’s in the oven,” he murmured. “You hungry?”

“Famished,” you grinned. “Thanks.”

“It’ll be another half an hour yet. You want to play the left hand for me?”

“You kidding?” you snorted. “I’m useless!”

“Only way to improve is to practise…”

“I’m not one of your pupils,” you chuckled.

“No,” he agreed. “Humour me anyway?”

You rolled your eyes and petted the nearest, coiling snake of his unusual hair. It hissed softly at you in pleasure, and Ptolemy smiled, knowing that you were going to say yes already.
