Here's 822 words of fluff and gift-giving for you! This features Viggo, our most recent Mermay friend. Discord drabbles are open for another couple of hours, so send me a prompt in the #patreon-chat channel and I'll do it. I'm only accepting prompts there though.

The moment you saw the island drawing into view, you bit back a squeal, and you definitely heard Fergus stifling a chortle behind his thick, white beard. With your hand dangling over the side of the tiny boat, you let your fingers trail through the chilly waves, half hoping that somehow the orcas would know you were there and might let Viggo know you were on your way.

Of course, it was ridiculous. And anyway, you were still too far out.

The grizzled old selkie chuckled softly to himself as you leaned over the edge of the boat, peering out into the green, deep, inviting waters for any sign of Viggo. You found nothing but swirling currents and distant, deep kelp below, but it still made your spirit soar to be back here among the birds and the wild wind and surf.

By the time Fergus steered the craft into the safe harbour of the tiny inlet on the nature reserve, you were practically vibrating with excitement. It had been a month since your first visit to the rocky island, and you’d brought some of your favourite things with you that you’d promised to share with Viggo when you came back, including a devastatingly decadent chocolate cake.

As you waved goodbye to Fergus, you wondered whether you should hang around on the concrete jetty or schlep your stuff all the way up the cliff to the cottage first. In fact, you didn't have to wait long. Whether he’d been alerted by the rumble of the small outboard motor or whether his orca friends had told him of your arrival, Viggo was soon powering up into the cove. You recognised the little clip out of his dorsal before you noticed the smoky half-moon near its base, or glimpsed the streak of white in his forelock, but when he surfaced, he did so with a magnificent breach in the small, deep pool of the cove, sending water spraying up the cliffs of the inlet and making you shriek.

“You’re back!” he laughed as he surfaced, adding, “Sorry…”

“It’s fine,” you snorted, brushing yourself down. “I brought you something.”

“You did?” he chirped, grinning and swimming closer. “So did I!”

“You also brought yourself something?”

At that, he slapped his flipper down into the water and sent another spray washing over you in a myriad of sparkling droplets. “No, silly, I also brought you something.”

Grinning, you sat down on the jetty and drew out the foil-wrapped slice of chocolate cake from your rucksack, hoping it wasn’t too squashed. “Here,” you said. “I told you about it last time I was here.”

Swimming closer, he put his hands on your knees and drew himself up out of the water. His chest sparkled in the sunlight and you swallowed hard. His grip was prodigious, and you felt your heart rate quicken a little at his strong grip.

“Well,” he smiled playfully. “What is it?”

Croaking, you uttered a quick, “Here,” and handed him the bulgy, awkwardly-wrapped bundle. “It’s that chocolate cake I mentioned. I made it yesterday, but it should have travelled ok…”

Viggo unwrapped it carefully, his dexterous, scarred hands nimbly working the foil open, and then he smiled when he saw it. “Smells good,” he murmured. “Do I just… you know…?” and he mimed shovelling it in with his hands.

“Yup. Go for it,” you laughed. It wasn’t as if you’d brought pastry forks and napkins with you after all.

He rolled his eyes and groaned luxuriantly when he tasted it, dipping low in the water and sagging with the sheer delight of chocolate on his tongue. “That’s so good…” he moaned. “Oh my god. I’m not letting you leave this island. You have to stay here and make me that every day.”

Laughing, you watched him polish the rest of it off with the enthusiasm of a Labrador inhaling leftovers, and snorted. “I can’t make it while I’m here - there’s no electricity on the island. But maybe I can convince them to get me a good solar array… then I could stay…?”

“Would you?” he asked, swallowing awkwardly around a huge chunk of cake and icing. “Stay, I mean…? If you could?”

Would you? You turned the idea over in your mind. “Maybe for a bit,” you said. “I like the idea of the remoteness of the place… and… certain locals have made it seem rather inviting to want to stay…”

Viggo grinned, his teeth full of chocolate frosting. “Great!” he laughed. “We’d take care of you, I promise…” Then he dumped the empty foil onto the jetty and dipped low. “Here’s what I brought you,” he said. “You can’t eat it, but…” and with that, he fetched something off the bottom of the cove.

Surfacing, he held out an enormous oyster shell to you, open and glinting in the sunlight, and att its heart was a truly huge pearl.
