Oh I knew I shouldn’t be doing this.
There were no contracts out, and I should be recuperating, but the smell of the freshly baked pastries in your shop were just too much for me. The hunger in my belly burned like acid, and I knew my ribs were sticking out now. It had been too many journeys to the other side without rest, and I was starving.
Nosing the door open, I stepped inside, unable to resist.
I’d chosen the back door, of course, in the hopes that there would be a tray of something sitting to one side that I could pilfer something from, but when I rounded the corner and looked up, I found you standing there with your back to me, and I froze.
You looked like… perfection.
I’d never seen anyone so beautiful in my whole life, and if I hadn’t been so transfixed, I might have got away without ever being spotted. However, like a common dog, I stood there and whined. Your curves, your delicious, beautiful body, just spoke to me on a level I’d never experienced before, and I let out an embarrassingly loud whine.
You turned in surprise, and I looked up at you with my red-brown eyes, and instead of shrieking or backing away in fear, your face fell and you clapped a hand to your mouth. “Hey there,” you crooned, crouching low. “Hey, how did you get in here?”
I had the option of running then, of bolting away and leaving you behind, but that outstretched hand called me the same way the afterlife shepherds me when I’m ferrying souls. I had no choice but to go to you. I was yours then. Heart, body, soul; yours. Forever.
Your hand stroked through my black, smoky fur, and I shuddered.
“Hey there,” you whispered. “You’re so thin,” you said as you scratched through my coat and ruffled my fur, and it’s true. I really was.
I nuzzled against you almost before I knew what I was doing, and your hand scrunched my ear so deliciously that my exhausted limbs just gave way and I rolled onto my back.
“Here,” you sighed gently, “You look half-starved. How about one of these?”
I ate what you gave me, and more, returning week after week, whenever I could. Once, I even entered the shop in my human form, and I stuttered and stammered over my order when I saw you behind the counter. It wasn’t always you serving the customers, you see, but today, it was you, and I was so completely, hopelessly far gone.
To my delight, you blushed when you saw me. I’ll never forget that. You blushed. You! The most beautiful human I’d ever seen! And you blushed when I spoke to you… Maybe next time I’ll ask you for coffee. Or the time after that. Maybe… If I’m brave enough.
