Crazy episode! Felt like a full on finale!

Jeff K.

Been waiting for this one. I think this might wind up being one of my favorite episodes of the series so far. Bonus points for them paying some serious homage to one of my absolute favorite movies of all-time, The Great Escape.

Lyn Hurst

Will is not Vecna's bitch. Not sure if the powers were innate. Same with El and the other kids in the lab. I know they said 001 was first - and somehow they used his power to inflict the other kids? Not sure exactly how that works but Papa mentioned it. Henry was Papa's first and Will is Vecna's first. Vecna wanted El but she fought back. So cool at the end. Will rose above and decided to fight Vecna. I am guessing El, Kali and Will take down Vecna. No human that Vecna has tried to recruit, except for the mindless Demogorgons and the Mindflayer, have chosen to join him. The demogorgons and Mindflayer are created by him and forced to obey. I loved the Max and Holly story. It was so cool. I felt like Holly was Alice and Max is the mad hatter (without the hat of course) but dressed in green with the red hair. I am loving that development. Very creative.

I agree with the age thing. It doesn't matter. Kids change so many times during their early teens until late teens. Huge growth spurt.

Cool fact, Ross Duffer says the woman who played the teacher, Miss Harris, was The Duffers’ own high school drama teacher. I think that's awesome they cast her.

Joshua Johnson

So if you remember last season where max was running up that hill.. that area was in Vecna’s mind and that’s where both Max and Holly are trapped in. Vecna’s mind. I absolutely loved how Will vecna’d the demogorgons by breaking all their bones lol

Jeff K.

That's genuinely awesome. Thanks for sharing.

MattyB207

Yeah, no problem. Very welcome.

Jeff K.

I read a comment... somewhere, can't recall where... pointing out that it's a little weird for any of us to be talking about the ages because Steve, Jonathan, and Nancy were all the same age in season one that Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, Dustin, and Max are now, so if we didn't have a problem with Joe Keery or Charlie Heaton playing a high school student in season one, we shouldn't have a problem with Millie Bobby Brown or Finn Wolfhard playing a high school kid. Which is 100% correct.

Derek reminds me of a live action version of Cartman from South Park.

Has it occurred to you whose dresses Holly was trying on? I think it's a bit suspicious how the military jumped so quickly to rounding up all of the children of a certain age, based solely on the abduction of a single child. The main-character kids had already guessed Vecna's plans, but the military doesn't even believe that Vecna exists. They think that El is directly responsible for everything. Hmmm. Easter Eggs If you get a chance, go back and look at the shape of the spyglass hole. Then compare it to the cave "window" at which Max and Holly stand and talk. The flyer that Max picks up in the school hallway in 1959 shows the date of the Oklahoma production. Guess what the date is. The woman who is playing the teacher who is supervising the kids is the Duffer Brothers' actual former drama teacher. --- And if the S5E3 reveal wasn't enough, you get two reveals for the price of one in this episode. Will's power is different than El's, inasmuch as he's able to connect with hive mind and use it against them. El's power is more physical. If I had to guess, El was born with her powers and they may have even been inherited from her mother, who apparently also had powers. It may also be the case that living in close proximity to Hawkins also caused a transfer of powers (probably at birth). Will's power was probably at least somewhat innate, given how eager Vecna was to capture him and manipulate him. But Will grew up thinking he wasn't special and didn't belong in this world, so even if the hive mind was nearby, he wouldn't have had the confidence to explore his abilities. He needed to undergo some spiritual growth first, and start believing in himself. The icky goop that Vecna feeds his victims may also enhance special powers. I don't think Vecna is trying to destroy children with abilities or suppress their abilities. I think he's doing the exact opposite and conditioning them to reach their full potential (but under his control).

Holly was trying on Henry’s sisters dresses. And eleven was not born with her powers man, her mom didn’t have powers. Her mom went into the state she was in bc of what Dr brenner did to her after she was catching on to things and figured out they took Jane from her. Dr brenner found Henry and tried to recreate him and that’s where all the kids (including eleven) got their powers from. It was explained last season.

Jacob Livingston

100% agree. The fact their age and then not being kids is the biggest talking point and critique with people is so frustrating. They are playing what 16-17 year olds? It’s done in a ton of shows/movies were most of the time the actors playing kids/high schoolers aren’t actually kids and teenagers. And as good as the first 4 eps is, as good as everything looks, as good as the acting and writing is I have no problem it took so long. The duffer brothers don’t miss!!!

Jacob Livingston

I think you are forsure alone in that lol. The first 4 eps were fantastic. Each episode had action scenes and crazy stuff happening and episode 4 was one the best episodes of the series so far. Just the final 20-30 mins of episode 4 was some of the best television there is.

Jacob Livingston

I was so excited to see y’all’s reaction to the final 20 mins or so after I watched it. The scene with will was so damn cool and so well done. I love they have given Will a bigger story and bigger role. And I completely agree vecna looks incredible. His entrance was awesome. Then the monologue with will and just walks away…. Chefs kiss.

Lyn Hurst

I noticed that Vecna had these claw type things on his shoulders that kept moving back and forth when he was walking. I do not recall seeing that in season 4. Maybe I am forgetting.

Lyn Hurst

Lol, when I was watching him read to the kids, I thought he looked like the psychic lady from Poltergeist. There facial expressions and voices sound similar.

Lyn Hurst

Pretty much during season 3 and 4 they brought more of people's feelings into the episodes. I think they are reallly trying to push Will being able to have his someone.

Lyn Hurst

Also some Back to the Future in there. They have 80s songs of course and have alluded to other movies in the past.

Jacob Livingston

Yeah I think he looks a little different is from when they burned him and Nancy blasted him with the shotgun out of the house and then some of it is maybe him just getting stronger and more powerful between season 4 & 5. That’s my guess at least.

Jake

No, he didn’t have it in S4. He most likely grew or evolved from seasons.

Desiree Mclaughlin

Holly wasn't the only child when the military started rounding up kids. He had 3 more by that point, all the same age range. They talk about it in the scene with the Commander and Kay when he asks why Eleven would be rounding up the kids. Those 4, plus the 8 he got at the end of episode 4 (2 with Lucas, 3 with Mike, 3 with Robin) gets him to the 12 mentioned earlier.

Desiree Mclaughlin

Agreed! Seriously, it's such an overblown thing and it's getting annoying that people keep harping on it so much. I'm sure option A would've had Season 5 coming out earlier, but with Season 4 being delayed due to Covid and Season 5 due to multiple union strikes (between the writer's strike and the actor's strike there wasn't much going on in Hollywood for 7 months in 2023) I wish "fans" were a little more understanding. So many of them act like it was Netflix's choice to wait so long. I think that's where my main frustration comes from. For crying out loud, this is a FANTASY show. If you can't suspend disbelief for Stranger Things, what are we doing here?

C. J. Ramirez

I think 1 and 2 were the best seasons

Nowhere Man

That's true. I might've been thrown off by the ordering of the scenes. I'll have to rewatch that episode. It's seems like the military collecting the children happens first and then information about the 3 other abducted children is presented later, so at the moment the children are being put on the bus, it's seems a little bit like an overreaction. We also don't have any initial information about the timeline of the abductions (such as how much time passed before the children being gone was discovered). In Will's case, his mother let 8 hours slip by before realizing he wasn't in the house. It seems likely that Vecna started out abducting the children one at a time (with the initial intention of collecting all 12 that way), and then went after all of them at once, as soon as he realized that the children were being relocated and protected. Any method between one-at-a-time and all-at-once doesn't make any sense. Starting out with 4 out of 12 would be likely to scare everyone and create a panic, which is essentially what ended up happening.
