Sonic's kart racing games have long drafted behind the popular Mario Kart series. Until now. Sonic has made an aggressive move to cut ahead of his longtime rival. Sonic Racing's focus on competitive races and balanced difficulty is a welcome alternative to Mario Kart World's beautiful, rubber-banded marathons.

Plus: Need an SNES-style RPG inspired by Zelda and Chrono Trigger? We have a hidden gem just for you! And Frushtick shares his complicated feelings about the remaster of Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Games discussed:

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

Mario Kart World

Shrine’s Legacy

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Terranigma

The other stuff:

Pokemon Concierge

Spectators

Y’all mentioned illusion of Gaia and Terranigma, you really should give both of those games to try if you ever get a chance. Soul blazer as well, but especially Gaia and Terranigma. Two of the absolute best SNES games in my opinion. The latter never came out in the US, but it did get an English release in Europe.

Since you asked, I see Spectators is on order for Columbus (OH) Metro library system

imo terranigma should be held up equally with chronic trigger as one of the best snes games. I couldn't get into illusion of gaia, but terranigma looks cool, has great emotional beats, and feels better to play than pretty much any of those older games.

Both the library in my town and the library I used to work for have copies of Spectators. As a former librarian, libraries typically do not (and should not) self censor. Materials that contain mature themes or explicit content are typically cataloged in the adult section, but they are not excluded from the collection solely on the basis of their content. Your library most likely has a collection development policy, which should tell you more about how they guide their purchasing decisions.

You better thank your lucky stars that Russ calling Cream the Rabbit “Cream the Cat” is paywalled.

Playing Mario Kart World online as I listen to this. I’m not saying there aren’t any improvements to be made like some more courses, race modes, item customization during friend races, and more personalization to the racer and kart you choose, but the online play is great. It sets up matches quickly, it’s stable and reliable, and it’s just lot of fun.

I have a question related to Super Mario Galaxy 2 and handheld mode: how necessary is it for a Switch game (and especially a Nintendo-published game) to play well in handheld mode? I also feel that annoyance when a game doesn't play well in handheld, but this is obviously something I don't think about in regards to Xbox or Playstation games. Is this an actual issue, or does it just feel like one because my brain associates "Switch" with "handheld" now?

You can find Spectators (and most everything else you can think of) at the Austin Public Library. :)

Russ's comments about the difficulty out of the gate for Mario Galaxy 2 reminds me a lot of the conversation around the difficulty of Silksong. In both cases it seems the developers were more interested in building from the difficulty point of the previous game rather than copying the same difficulty curve.

What platform were y'all using for sonic? Because I found the lag in the demo to be pretty bad tbh so maybe it's just a steamdeck problem

Have some faith in libraries, Chris! Spectators is available at the Orange County (CA) Public Library and LA Public Library. Hoopla (available with your library card) is also a great resource for digital books/ebooks, including comics. Doesn't look like Spectators is available there yet, but I read all of Saga on Hoopla.

I just grabbed Spectators from my local library in Wisconsin!

Late to comment, but wanted to keep up my semi-annual tradition of urging you cowards to play Darkwood. It's easily the scariest game I've ever played, and manages to do so while being top-down. It's also just a really great game, with a solid progression loop and lots of surprising little twists. Also: It makes me so happy to hear you guys constantly shouting out Russ at RTG. I was lucky to know him back in the Navy days and he was the same then as he is now: Thoughtful, rigorous, funny, talented, and wholly devoted to helping other people. If you ever talk to him again ask him about the time he saved a bunch of Indonesian fishermen from drowning!

Had to check my library after this. All copies checked out at King County Library and on order at Seattle Public Library!
